Vice President's
Message

hartered Accountancy has become one of the most

promising professions in India. There were times when
the word Chartered Accountant was synonymous with
the term book-keeper and the realm of Chartered Accountant was confined to Accounts, Audit
and Taxation. Presently there is no field, whether it is Business Finance, Management, Risk
Management, Business Planning, Information System Audit or Environment Audit so on and so
forth, where Chartered Accountants have not carved a niche for themselves. In fact, with
greater synthesis of the world economy, the role of Chartered Accountants has changed to
complete business solutions provider providing qualified CAs a fulfilling career throughout
their life.

CA. M. Devaraja Reddy

Vice President, ICAI

The demand for CAs is increasing at an amazing rate. Newly qualified CAs are being absorbed in
the industry in large numbers. The Institute offers campus placement opportunities to the newly
qualified Chartered Accountants. Besides, opportunities of self-practice also exist. The
professional image which our members have created and developed, over a period of six
decades, would surely enable the future CAs to reap rich dividends in practice arena as well.
The Institute values its students and always strives to provide them the best infrastructure,
scholastic opportunities and exposure that would sharpen their skills and shape them into world
class professionals. I am pleased to note that the Board of Studies has brought out a booklet

of the Chartered Accountancy Course including various issues relating to practical training and
details about the services offered by the Board of Studies, Committee for Members in Industry
and the Examination Department & various opportunities available to qualified Chartered
Accountants. I am sure this booklet will educate students about the glorified world of Chartered
Accountancy Profession and help them in making the right career choices.
As Swami Vivekananda said There is no limit to the power of the human mind. The more
concentrated it is, the more power is brought to bear on one point. So focus on a Professional
Career like Chartered Accountancy, divert all your energies on the course curriculum and be
confident that you would become a CA at the earliest possible time. I appreciate the efforts put
in by the Board of Studies and officials of the Institute in getting this booklet published.

Chairman's
Message

ou have made the right career choice of taking up Chartered

Accountancy as your profession. With the emergence of New
World Economic Order, cross border transactions are being carried
out with ease and there is relatively free flow of goods, services and people throughout the world. With
dismantling of trade barriers, the work arena for professionals like Chartered Accountants has widened
substantively. When geography has become history, the role of a Chartered Accountant has also expanded to
encompass a variety of functions. These include areas like international taxation, international law, strategic
financial management, corporate law, risk management, environment audit besides their traditional roles in
the areas of financial reporting, audit and domestic taxation.

CA. V. Murali

Chairman, Board of Studies, ICAI

In the present scheme of education and training, there are two routes to enter the Chartered Accountancy
course Common Proficiency Test (CPT) route and Direct Entry route. If a student wishes to join the CA course
earlier in life, he can register for Common Proficiency Course after passing class tenth examinations. However,
he can sit for CPT after appearing for 10+2 examinations. Having passed CPT, the student gets admitted to the
Chartered Accountancy Course which comprises of theoretical education and practical training of three years.
Graduates/post graduates with specified marks and intermediate pass students of the Institute of Company
Secretary of India and the Institute of Cost Accountants of India can directly enter the CA course. During the
CA course, the student is also imparted other technical and soft skills related to Information Technology,
General Management and Communication Skills. The exhaustive theoretical education and practical training
help in proper grooming of these budding professionals. The Board of Studies has brought out this booklet
Chartered Accountancy Course - The ICAI's Interface with Students containing all significant details about
the CA course, National and International recognitions for the CAs and the opportunities available to
Chartered Accountants. Anybody looking for relevant information will find the booklet quite useful and
helpful. I extend my appreciation of the Board of Studies staff for bringing out this useful publication.
Your positive attitude, dedicated and planned study will lead you to the final goal. Difficulties mastered are
opportunities won. Always remember, there is no gain without pain. It is impossible to get rainbows without
rain. Umbrellas can't stop the rain, but they will make us stand in the rain. Similarly, confidence may not itself
bring success, but it gives us the power to face any challenge. Look with positive intention; speak with inner
conviction; listen with intense attention; then you will move in the right direction. To succeed, it is
necessary to accept the world as it is and rise above it. Everything in this world has got a utility value Even a
stopped clock is right twice a day. The best way to predict your future is to create it. Optimism is the faith
that leads to Achievement. You have a bright, professionally fulfilling career as a Chartered Accountant to
look forward to. It is important to prepare yourself fully, fine tune your skills, focus and hone your core
competence and update yourself knowledgewise to be a globally equipped professional. I extend my best
wishes to all the students who wish to enrol for the CA Course and do hope and look forward to greeting you as
a Chartered Accountant professional soon. Wishing you a fulfilling career.
With warm professional regards, forever, yours in service.

The Board of Studies

ICAIs Interface with Students

The Board of Studies (BoS) is the premier educational wing of the Institute. The
mission of Board of Studies is to provide a strong foundation of knowledge,
skills and professional values that enables students to grow as wholesome
professionals and adapt to change throughout their professional career.
The Board of Studies' academic function mainly relates to undertaking all the
work relating to preparing, revising and updating the course material and other
relevant literature. Headed by the Director, BoS, it has a dedicated team of faculty
members who are either Chartered Accountants themselves or are subject experts
in their relevant subject areas. These faculty members, apart from preparing and
revising the course contents and other relevant literature, undertake all other
functions like students' counselling, answering academic queries, taking lectures,
preparing mock tests and quizzes etc.
Study Materials for all the subjects at CPT, Intermediate (IPC) and Final levels are
prepared in-house by the respective faculty members. The Study Materials, which
are prepared after a detailed study, research and editorial work, are generally
divided into two volumes. Volume I deals with the conceptual framework and
Volume II is the Practice Manual, which contains questions from the past
examinations along with the solutions. In certain subjects like Cost Accounting
and Financial Management, there are four volumes (since there are two subjects)
and in Taxation, there are three volumes.
Subject-specific Practice Manuals contain a rich bank of questions along with
solutions to help in better understanding and application of the concepts
explained in the Study Materials. Questions from the past examinations are
adapted and solutions are worked out in detail with working notes and
explanations, wherever required.
Supplementary Study Papers are annual publications, containing a discussion of
the amendments made by the latest Finance Act and significant notifications &
circulars in Direct and Indirect Tax Laws.

20

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India

Select Cases in Direct and Indirect Tax Laws is a compilation of significant recent
judicial decisions of Supreme Court and High Courts which, when read in
conjunction with the DTL & IDTL Study Materials, will enable students to
appreciate the significant issues involved in interpretation and application of tax
laws.
The Revision Test Papers (RTPs) contain a variety of questions along with
solutions broadly covering the syllabus of each subject. The RTPs are prepared
with the twin objective of helping you self-assess the effectiveness of your study
and revision by solving the questions contained therein independently and
comparing the same with the answers given and updating you on the latest
developments relevant for your examination in all the subjects.
Suggested Answers contain suggested answers to questions set at the CA
Examinations. These answers are prepared with a view to assist you in education.
Suggested Answers will enable you to solve the problems in the best possible
manner and guide you to improve your performance in the examination.
Mock Tests are conducted at the Regional Offices and Branches of the Institute
and check the students level of progress before the examination. Mock Test Papers
are also hosted on the website along with suggested answers for the help of
students who could not attend the mock tests.
The Students' Journal - 'The Chartered Accountant Student' is another form of
disseminating important information for your benefit. It provides quality articles
and academic updates that help you in your learning process. You can also send
your articles for publishing in the journal.
BOS Publication - 'How to Face CA Examinations'? is a lucid, comprehendible
handbook which gives practical tips on how to study each subject, how to whet
your learning skills and how to face the examination with confidence. You
may read/download this booklet from the Institute's website.

Organising Oral Coaching Classes for all the levels of CA

Course. BoS encourages Regional Councils and Branches

Let us NOT rush to attend physical/satellite classes as a part of crowd mentality,
without first evaluating our options. Let us avoid rote/parrot learning using short
notes/books written in concise and precise style like a Key, which do not provide
adequate knowledge required to succeed in the CA Course. Do consider whether it is
worthwhile spending huge sums of money, efforts and travel time, when a complete
distance education package is available on Cloud Campus FREE of Cost, that enables
students to learn at their own pace, at their doorsteps anytime and at the click of a
button!

Other services of the BoS

Practical
Training

The unique requirement of Practical Training is instrumental in shaping a wellrounded professional to ensure that students have an opportunity to acquire onthe-job work experience of a professional nature. The entire process of Practical
Training is administered by the M&SS Section of the ICAI.
Practical Training is a process of growing up from a CA student to an excellent
professional. It helps one to understand fine nuances of practical and professional
life. Practical Training also enables students to face the examinations where
application oriented questions are posed. Both theoretical and practical aspects
should go hand in hand along with communication and presentation skills coupled
with being technology savvy to become an extraordinary professional. Other
benefits of Practical Training are...

Exposes the candidates to the dynamic and demanding world of business and
helps them to balance their study and work commitments.

Helps in developing various skills like inter-personal skills (in dealing with peers,
seniors, clients), initiation, objectivity, communication skills, self-management
skills, etc.

Enhances understanding of different organisations, of how businesses work,

and of work relationships.

Helps to relate accounting work to other business functions and activities.

Develops the appropriate professional values, ethics and attitudes in practical,

real-life situations.

Helps in understanding the practical issues faced by businesses.

Helps in increasing the overall business knowledge.

Provides a broad exposure to a variety of areas - accounting, taxation, auditing,

finance, etc.

Helps in appreciating the problems in the examinations from a broader

perspective.

Inculcates a disciplined attitude for hard work.

Develops necessary skills in applying theoretical knowledge to practical

situations.

Provides exposure to overall socio-economic environment in which

organisations operate.
Therefore, it is advised that students should take Practical Training sincerely.

When to Join Practical Training?

A student who has passed Group I/both Groups of IIPCC or has registered on the
basis of securing prescribed percentage of marks in Graduation/Post Graduation
under the Direct Entry Scheme can join three years of Practical/Articled Training
on successful completion of the Orientation Course and 100 hours Information
Technology Training (ITT).

Admission and Registration of Articleship (Regulation 45)

As per Regulation 45, a Member, before engaging an articled assistant, has to
satisfy himself that he is entitled to train
articled assistants and that his professional
practice is suitable for the purpose of
training articled assistants. It is obligatory
for the Member planning to engage
articled students to ensure on the one
hand, that professional practice is suitable
for imparting such training; and on the
other hand that such an articled assistant
has successfully complied with eligibility
conditions prescribed by the Institute.
Articleship shall be executed in Forms 102 and 103. Form 102 is a Deed of Article
and Form 103 contains various particulars which, along with documentary
evidence of compliance with Regulation 45, is required to be sent to the Institute
within 30 days of the commencement of articles.

Industrial Training (Regulation 51)

The entire period of practical training can be served either with a practicing
member or partly with a practicing member and partly in an approved industrial
establishment as an Industrial Trainee. The period of such industrial training may
range between 9-12 months during the last year of the prescribed period of
Practical Training. Only students of final Chartered Accountancy Course are
eligible for industrial training. Training in an industrial/commercial/financial
environment provides trainees with the opportunity to develop a problem-solving
attitude and to have an insight into the functioning of the accounts department.
It also diversifies their practical experience and helps them in developing the
attributes of team work and correlation with members of other professions and
disciplines.

26

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India

Secondment (Regulation 54)

In order to expose the trainees at large to multi-disciplinary work and variety of
business situations, an arrangement of secondment has been provided in the
Regulation 54. The secondment enables an articled trainee to gain practical
experience, in areas where the Principal may not be in a position to provide the
same, in the office of another member in practice on the basis of a mutually
agreed arrangement. The member to whom the trainee is seconded is not entitled
to train more than two such trainees on secondment. The aggregate period of
secondment cannot exceed one year. The Council may permit secondment with
more than one such member provided the minimum period of secondment shall
be four months. Where an articled trainee is seconded to a member in industry, the
total period spent in the industry including the period of industrial training should
not exceed one year. The principal is required to include particulars of the
secondment in the report to the Council under Regulation 64.
Apart from the secondment of a trainee from one firm to another, or to an
industry, firms may exchange trainees on mutual basis for a limited period to the
advantage of firms and trainees. Such an arrangement is also quite flexible like the
scheme of secondment & enables the firms to overcome deficiency, if any, in
Practical Training imparted to trainees.

Part of Practical Training outside India (Regulation 54 A)

Part of the Practical Training can be undergone under eligible Members outside
India. Regulation 54A contains a provision whereby a principal can depute an
articled assistant not exceeding six months to any member outside India who is
eligible to engage and train such trainees under the bye-laws of institution or
body, etc., set up in the respective country under the relevant statutes. It may be

noted that in such cases no deed of articles needs to be executed or any intimation
to be sent to the Institute in this regard. Further, the principal remains responsible
for submitting the Report to the Council in terms of Regulation 64. It is an
excellent opportunity for articled assistants who are undergoing training in India
to get exposure outside India as well. It is not necessary that an articled assistant
is deputed only to a member of the Institute located in that country. In fact, an
articled assistant can be deputed to any member of that country's accounting
institution or body set-up under the relevant statute provided such member a is
entitled to train articled assistants (by whatever name called) in that country.

Present Scales of Stipends to Articled Assistants

A person registered as an articled assistant is entitled to receive a minimum
monthly stipend as per the rates specified under the Chartered Accountants
Regulations, 1988. The current minimum rates of monthly stipend payable,
depending on the situation of the normal place of service of the articled
assistants, are as follows...
