Text-based Lesson Plan
TEKS
6th grade Math

6.12 Measurement and data. The student applies mathematical process

standards to use numerical or graphical representations to analyze
problems. The student is expected to:

A) Represent numeric data graphically, including dot plots, stem-and

leaf plots, histograms, and box plots.
Content Objective
The student will be able create a box plot with 100% accuracy
individually using the given box-plot worksheet.
Language Objective The student will be able to read the data given in the form of a set of
numbers and compose a box plot using the data. Students will also be able
to explain where the median, the lower quartile, higher quartile, and the
min and max are for the set of data.
Text Read
Attached to the Lesson Plan. (Creating a Box Plot on a Number Line)
Strategy Used

Concept Definition Map, and Exit Slip

1. Students will recall how to find the median and min and max for
set of data.
2. Using a Concept Def Map, you will fill it out in order to
distinguish how to set up a box plot and what bits of information
you will need in order to create one.
3. Model an example of a box plot so the students will know how the
data is set up.
4. Give the students the problem worksheet that will have 7 questions
concerning box plots.
5. 10 mins before the end of class give the students an exit slip so
you may assess what the student may need more help on.

Procedure

Assessment

Exit Slip: Students will be given an exit slip to complete before leaving
the class. It will consist of a question asking how one would go about
creating a box plot and explaining how each piece of information creates
the box plot.
