Open-Circuit Test:

We connected a voltmeter, wattmeter, and an ammeter in primary side of the step down
transformers. The voltage at rated frequency is applied to that primary side with the help of a
variac of variable ratio auto transformer. The secondary side of the transformer is kept open.
Now with the help of variac, applied voltage gets slowly increased until the voltmeter gives
reading equal to the rated voltage of the primary side. After reaching at rated primary side
voltage, all three instruments reading (Voltmeter, Ammeter and Wattmeter readings) are
recorded.

a) Schematics of open-circuit test connections

b) By performing the open-circuit test, the measured values are as follows:

Input Voltage (Voc) = 38.7 V

Input Current ( Ioc) = 0.0127A

Input Power (Poc) = 0.476W

Calculations :

a) Winding resistance (Rc) =

( )
( ( ))2

0.476
(0.0127)2

= 29.51

b)

Apparent power (Soc) = Voc Ioc

= 38.7V * 0.0127A
= 0.49149VA

c) Reactive power (Qoc) = [( )2 ( )2 ]

= [(0.4914)2 (0.476)2 ]
= 0.1224VAR

d) Magnetizing inductance (Xm)=

Voc 2
Qoc
38.72

= 0.1224
= 12.234K
