FADE IN:
EXT. BATES MOTEL/HOUSE- NIGHT
A ferocious thunderstorm ensues in front of Bates
Motel/House. Lightening illuminates the sky and hail beats
down on the motels tin roof.
The Bates House is barely visible in the background. A
closer look shows all the lights are off.
INT. FRUIT CELLAR - NIGHT
The fruit cellar projects one small light. The rest of the
cellar is dark and cluttered with jars preserving small
organs, stuffed animals, and books.
A CLINKING of metal echos in the cellar. In the only lit
corner, a WOMAN sits on the cement floor with her arms above
her head, chained.
Shes crying. Begging.
WOMAN
Listen to me, NormLightening flashes, followed by a thunderous BANG. A
SILHOUETTE, one of a small frame in a tight dress, stands at
the taxidermy table gripping a bottle of whiskey. Unfinished
work sprawls on the surface: a dead squirrel, a half-sewn
raccoon, shears.
SILHOUETTE
(in a high-pitched voice)
We told you to stay out of it.
WOMAN
He was lying to me. I needed to
know the truth or I couldnt help
him.
SILHOUETTE
We didnt ask for your help.
WOMAN
Thats what I do!
The Silhouette moves towards the chained Woman on the
ground, dragging the whiskey bottle around the table.

2.
SILHOUETTE
Tsk. Tsk. Well. Not anymore.
WOMAN
Please! Please, dont. I wont tell
anyone, I swear. I can help you-A screeching laugh comes from the Silhouette. The whiskey
bottle shakes as it reaches full, pink lips.
SILHOUETTE
Oh, darling. Dont be so dramatic.
Thats what they all say.
WOMAN
No. I-I swear I w-wont.
A pair of heels stumble as they step into the light that is
cast over the Woman. The Silhouette crouches down in front
of her.
NORMA LOUISE BATES, early 40s, stares at the Woman; her eyes
are focused, angry, and unforgiving. The Woman cries harder.
WOMAN
Please. Ill do anything--anything
you want. I have money I can
transfer-Norma Louise grabs the Woman by her tattered white blouse
and holds up the shears that had been on the table.
NORMA BATES
(yelling)
Shut up! Shut up now!
The Woman looks up at Norma Louise, chained and defenseless,
as her reality sets in.
NORMA LOUISE
You will never take advantage of my
boy like that again.
Norma Louise takes one last swig of whiskey before tossing
the empty bottle to the side. She gives the Woman a
demeaning stare as she points the scissors at the Womans
throat.

ACT ONE
EXT. BATES HOME - DAY
NORMAN BATES, 22, tall and skinny has an innocent facade.
Norma Louises high-pitched laugh rings from inside the
gloomy, deteriorating two-story home in the background.
Norman shoots a look towards the door, annoyed.
The front door opens and Norma Louise, Normans mother,
skips out. SHERIFF ALEX ROMERO, early 40s, follows behind
her as he adjusts his gun hilt.
NORMA LOUISE
Dont forget to bring those back
tonight after you get off.
She giggles. Alex smirks as he tucks something shiny into
his back pocket.
ALEX ROMERO
Never leave without em.
They walk down the cobbled path towards Norman who looks
away, pretending he doesnt see them.
NORMA LOUISE
Be careful today. How is your
shoulder feeling?
The couple reach the bottom of the path as she says this.
Norma Louise rubs Alexs shoulder, a worried look on her
face.
Norman and Alex bare into each others eyes; Normans are
glazed with hate and resentment.
ALEX ROMERO
Its fine. Hey, Norman.
Alex and Normans reproachful stare lingers for a moment.
Norma Louise looks up at Norman. Immediately, Norman smiles
at the couple.
NORMAN BATES
Hey, Romero. Yeah, how is your
shoulder? Anything I can do to
help?

4.

ALEX ROMERO
Just go to therapy like you
promised.
NORMAN BATES
(sarcastically)
Because that worked out so well
last time.
NORMA LOUISE
Oh, Norman, stop it. This wont be
like Pineview. You only need to go
a couple times to make sure your
blackouts dont start back up.
NORMAN BATES
What ever did happen to Dr.
Edwards, Romero? He went missing
after you spoke with him, right?
Norma Louise looks at Alex, who continues to stare at
Norman.
ALEX ROMERO
Yes Norman, because I interrogated
him about stealing money from his
patients. Including your mother.
(pause)
He probably...ran off to avoid
being arrested.
NORMAN BATES
Sure. Or maybe you killed him and
you were going to try to blame me
so theyd lock me up forever!
Norman turns his back to them and storms towards the motel
in a haughty stampede.
NORMA LOUISE (O.S.)
Norman Bates!
INT. BATES MOTEL OFFICE - LATER
Norman checks in an ELDERLY COUPLE in the quaint front
office of the motel. He hands them a room key with a
charming smile on his face.
NORMAN BATES
Youre all set in Room 6. I hope
you have a pleasant stay at Bates
Motel.

5.

ELDERLY MAN
Thank you, son.
ELDERLY WOMAN
Arent you just the sweetest thing?
The Elderly Man takes the keys from him as his wife gives
Normans cheek a small pinch. Norman smiles and the couple
walk out the front door.
As they exit, DYLAN BATES, 26, Normans brother, shrugs in
the door.
DYLAN BATES
Hey, Norman.
NORMAN BATES
Dylan!
Norman swerves around the small counter and grabs his
brother, bringing him in for a tight embrace.
NORMAN BATES
Thank God youre finally here.
Youre staying, right? Hows Emma?
Dylan steps back to take a peek outside. He ruffles his
dirty blonde hair and adjusts his leather jacket, which
complete his overall rugged look. He looks disturbed, tired.
DYLAN BATES
She went up to the house to see
Norma. Shes doing okay, all things
considering.
NORMAN BATES
Dylan, its not your fault.
Dylan shoves his hands deep in his pockets and looks down.
When he looks back up, theres a trace of tears in his eyes.
DYLAN BATES
But it is my fault, Norman. Im the
reason her dad was killed. We moved
to Seattle so she could get better
after surgery. And now...
NORMAN BATES
And now youre back here. Emmas
like family to us, shell be okay.
She doesnt know, does she?

6.

DYLAN BATES
Hell no. If she found out that it
was my boss that killed her dad,
she wouldnt trust me.
Norman wraps his arm around Dylans shoulder and leads him
outside. He locks the office door behind him.
NORMAN BATES
Come on. Lets go to the house.
INT. BATES HOUSE - MOMENTS LATER
Dylan closes the front door. The house is eerily quiet.
DYLAN BATES
They mustve gone out.
NORMAN BATES (CONTD)
Dylan, we need you here. I had
another blackout-DYLAN BATES
Yeah, I know. You attacked Romero?
Norman smirks. Dylan doesnt see him.
NORMAN BATES
I didnt know it was him. I blacked
out. But I agreed to see a
therapist a couple times a week so
he wont bring this to the police.
DYLAN BATES
Thats a hell of a deal, Norman.
The boys walk to the back of the house towards the living
room.
NORMAN BATES
Im sure Mother did something to
persuade him. It works out in my
favor anyway.
Dylan puts a firm hand on Normans chest to stop him.
DYLAN BATES
Speaking of favors. I picked this
up.
He reaches in his jacket and pulls out a pile of mail. He
shuffles through it.

7.

DYLAN BATES (CONTD)

And there was....this one.
Dylan takes a step towards Norman and hands an envelope to
him. It reads: UNITED STATES ARMY. To: NORMAN BATES.
DYLAN BATES(CONTD)
Did you apply for the army?
Norman yanks the envelope out of Dylans hand and tears it
open with expectation. He skims the letter.
NORMAN BATES
Yeah...Yeah. I actually already got
accepted-DYLAN BATES
(surprised)
What?
Norman looks up his brother, his eyes wide with excitement,
or fear.
NORMAN BATES
Yeah. Dont tell Mom, yet. I just
need to get out of here.
DYLAN BATES
So what do you mean therapy works
in your favor?
NORMAN BATES
I have to see a therapist for an
evaluation before I can leave
anyway.
DYLAN BATES
Well...it might be good for you.
(and then, hesitantly)
Maybe get away from Norma for a
bit.
NORMAN BATES
She doesnt seem to need me.
Norman looks at a portrait of Norma and Alex that sits on
the hallway table, a look of resentment crawling onto to his
face. He turns back to Dylan and playfully hits him with the
envelope.
NORMAN BATES (CONTD)
But, hey, I have to go. This letter
says I need a psych evaluation
(MORE)

8.
NORMAN BATES (CONTD) (CONTD)
first, so Im gonna go set that up
now.
DYLAN BATES
Yeah, better hurry and do that
before Norma notices youre gone.
NORMAN BATES
She never notices when Im gone.
INT. EMMAS HOUSE - EVENING
EMMA DECODY, 21, a beautiful girl with bright blue eyes and
scraggly red hair, rummages through a filing cabinet in a
kitchen. Norma Louise helps her.
There are coloring books on the kitchen table and colorful
magnets on the fridge. A SOUTHERN WOMAN, 35, ushers two
small children out of the room.
EMMA DECODY
Thank you so much for letting me
look through these. I dont know
why my dad didnt bring this when
we moved.
SOUTHERN WOMAN
Oh, well that thang is so heavy I
couldnt even get Martin to move it
downstairs. Yall take all the time
you need.
EMMA DECODY
It shouldnt be too hard to find. I
just need the official lease so I
can get this house switched under
my name.
The Southern Woman looks Emma up and down. Norma Louise sees
this and gives her a dirty look.
SOUTHERN WOMAN
Okay, well...help yourself to the
lemonade in the fridge.
The Woman exits the kitchen. Norma Louise goes back to
looking through the files.
NORMA LOUISE
This house has a lot of potential.
Sure you dont want to kick them
out and live here with Dylan?

9.

EMMA DECODY
Do you not want us living with you?
NORMA LOUISE
No, no, thats not it. You just
have privacy here. Im sure youll
want some alone time after all
this.
Emma starts rifling through the files at a slower pace.
EMMA DECODY
Dylans boss found him, you
know. Coincidentally enough.
NORMA LOUISE
Dylans boss? From the brewing
company?
EMMA DECODY
Yeah.
(pause).
Maybe I shouldnt be so naive.
There never seems to be
coincidences when it comes to
Dylan.
Norma Louise stops what shes doing and grabs Emmas hand.
Emma avoids her eyes.
NORMA LOUISE
Is Dylan treating you alright?
(pause)
He hasnt been blacking out, has
he?
EMMA DECODY
No. Hes great, actually.
Especially through all this. Its
just that Dylan use to run with a
bad crowd here...
NORMA LOUISE
Emma, look at me.
Emma looks up at Norma hesitantly, one hand still in the
filing cabinet.
NORMA LOUISE(CONTD)
If you can find a man that makes
you smile through all these
bullshit hard times, then hes
worth it.

10.
Emma looks down, considering for a moment. She nods her head
and pulls her hand from Normas and goes back to looking at
the files. Norma Louise looks at her with motherly concern.
EMMA DECODY
Got it.
Emma pulls a file out of the cabinet and immediately stands
up. Norma follows suit.
EMMA DECODY(CONTD)
Lets go. I dont want to be here
anymore.
INT. WAITING ROOM - DAY
Norman stares straight ahead. The psychiatrists waiting
room is too bright with its white walls, florescent lights,
and pastel flower paintings. Playful music CHIRPS in the
background.
Tugging at his high neck sweater, Norman slowly pulls out
the strand of pearls that is clasped around his neck. He
smiles.
FLASHBACK - INT. PINEVIEW PSYCHIATRY HOSPITAL - NIGHT
Norman holds down Alex by the throat and holds a large
kitchen knife above his shoulder.
NORMAN BATES
(in a high-pitched voice)
I dont need you. I have Norman.
Youre trying to come between us.
Norman drives the knife down right below Alexs left
shoulder.
Alex screams in agony.
RETURN TO PRESENT - INT. WAITING ROOM - CONTD
An OLDER WOMAN with wispy, white hair peaks over her
magazine at Norman. He doesnt seem to notice. He stares
straight ahead, stroking the pearls.
The woman slowly lowers her magazine. The playful melody
fills the silence.
OLD WOMAN
Honey, are you alright?
Norman looks over at her and cocks his head to the side. His
smile looks manic and strangely devilish.

11.

The woman looks horrified. She picks her purse off of the
floor and rushes to a seat on the other side of the room.
A pretty, brunette RECEPTIONIST opens the double oak doors
that separate the waiting room from the hallway and
receptionist desk.
RECEPTIONIST
Norman Bates?
Norman breaks out of his reverie and stuffs the pearls under
his collar. He stands obediently.
NORMAN BATES
Thank you.
He nods politely as he edges around the pretty, young girl
and into the bright hallway beyond.
The receptionist blushes and bites her lip as she pulls the
doors shut.
INT. PSYCHIATRIST OFFICE - CONTD
Walking alongside the bookshelf that resides on the majority
of one whole side of the office wall, Norman fingers the
dusty spines.
He stops when he reads an interesting title; he takes it off
its shelf and skims through it. Perverse and strange images
are vibrant on its white pages.
A distant voice, a womans, comes from the hallway right
outside the office door. As it draws nearer, Norman takes
the book and walks to the center of the room, waiting.
Norman stands erect, formal, while holding the book behind
his back.
The door creaks open. A blonde head appears, followed by the
full body of an attractive WOMAN in her forties. Shes
looking down at her clipboard.
WOMAN
Good evening, Mr. Bates.
She looks up.

12.
FLASHFORWARD - INT. FRUIT CELLAR - NIGHT
In the only lit corner, a woman sits on the cement floor
with her arms above her head, chained.
RETURN TO PRESENT - INT. PSYCHIATRIST OFFICE - CONTD
WOMAN
My name is Doctor Jessica Crane.
She tucks the clipboard under her arm.
JESSICA CRANE
Ill be your psychiatrist.
Norman smiles. He tightens his grip on the novel hes
harboring: Oedipus Rex.
ACT TWO
INT. PSYCHIATRIST OFFICE - DAY
Dr. Jessica Crane looks down at her clipboard while tapping
a pen to her chest. Norman gapes at this, intrigued. Then,
suddenly, his eyes narrow, his lip curls; a look of complete
disgust crosses his face.
JESSICA CRANE
Norman, it says here that you
suffer from blackouts?
Norman comes out of his reverie and his eyes focus back on
the doctors face.
NORMAN BATES
Yes. Well, I did.
JESSICA CRANE
When did these start happening?
NORMAN BATES
Oh, um... Im not sure. I dont
have them anymore though.
JESSICA CRANE
Okay, but we need to start from the
beginning to get to the root of the
issue. Can you remember the first
time you blacked out?
NORMAN BATES
You know, Ive had tests done.
MRIs and EEGs. The doctors say
everything is fine.

13.

JESSICA CRANE
Norman, blackouts can be a very
dangerous thing, regardless of how
often they happen or why. You could
harm yourself or others.
Norman scoffs.
JESSICA CRANE (CONTD)
Have you ever been driving when one
of these blackouts occurred?
NORMAN BATES
No. Mother wouldnt let me get my
license.
Jessica makes a note on her clipboard.
JESSICA CRANE
Youre 21. Do you still live with
your mother?
Norman hesitates. Jessica looks up.
NORMAN BATES
Is there something wrong with that?
JESSICA CRANE
No, not at all.
Norman rolls his eyes and looks up at the ceiling. He stops,
as if he has a thought, then looks up at Jessica.
NORMAN BATES
(with an air of nonchalance)
You know who is someone you should
analyze? Alex Romero.
Jessica looks up and stares at Norman with a look of
confusion.
JESSICA CRANE
Sheriff Alex Romero? Why do you say
that, Norman?
Norman smirks and picks up a magazine. He begins to skim the
pages.
JESSICA CRANE
You know I heard he married your
mother.

14.

The magazine pages stop flipping and Norman opens his mouth
as if he wants to say something. He closes his mouth and
returns to the magazine, his eyes glistening with hatred.
Jessica takes notes.
JESSICA CRANE (CONTD)
(absentmindedly)
I also heard he might loss his job
as Sheriff.
Norman smiles at this thought. Jessica watches him.
JESSICA CRANE
Do you not like Sheriff Romero,
Norman?
FLASHBACK - INT. PINEVIEW PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL - NIGHT
Norman bangs Alexs head against the linoleum floor
repeatedly. Blood mops the floor beneath Alexs head and
sprinkles Normans face and chest. Norman stares down at him
with wide and vicious eyes.
NORMAN BATES
(yelling)
Why cant you just leave Norman
alone?
Suddenly, Norma Bates replaces Norman. She holds down Alexs
head, hammering it against the floor with robotic
consistency. She has the same angry look on her face, the
same blood splatters on her clothes.
RETURN TO PRESENT - INT. PSYCHIATRIST OFFICE
Jessica is close to Normans face now. Her blonde curls end
right at her cleavage, which highlights her button-down
blouse.
JESSICA CRANE
Norman? Are you still with me?
Norman shakes his head, coming back to the present.
NORMAN BATES
Yes. Yes, Im fine.
Jessica slowly sits back in her chair.
JESSICA CRANE
(in a stern voice)
Norman, what do you remember about
your blackouts?

15.
Norman fiddles with his fingers in his lap, not looking at
the psychiatrist.
NORMAN BATES
(frustrated)
I dont have blackouts anymore.
Okay? That was all resolved and now
Im just living with my mother and
her lying husband.
Jessica puts down her pen and leans forward. She looks
concerned, yet sympathetic, as she focuses on Normans face.
JESSICA CRANE
What do you mean?
NORMAN BATES
Alex Romero cant be trusted. He
does bad things.
JESSICA CRANE
Bad things?
Norman glances at his watch. He stands up.
NORMAN BATES
You know, I think the hour is up. I
should probably get going.
Jessica stands up as Norman turns around and heads for the
door.
JESSICA CRANE
Norman, wait just a moment-NORMAN BATES
Ive really got to go. I have a
motel to run.
JESSICA CRANE
Okay, then. But here-She opens the table drawer that stands next to her chair and
pulls out a black leather journal.
JESSICA CRANE
I want you to keep a journal. Try
to record everything so that we can
determine if you have any more
blackouts.
Norman takes the journal from her with a nod of his head. He
gives her a small smile.

16.

NORMAN BATES
Sure.
JESSICA CRANE
See you next week, Norman.
Norman breaks out a full, sweet smile before turning around
and leaving the office. He shuts the door behind him.
Jessica sits back down in her seat. She picks up her pen and
on her notes she writes:
Mother
She underlines it three times.
INT. BATES KITCHEN - DAY
Norma Bates holds her phone to her ear with her shoulder as
she pulls a roast out of the oven.
NORMA LOUISE
(on the phone)
Yes, Norman Bates. N-O-R-M-A-N.
Yes, hes my son.
INT. FRONT HALLWAY - CONTD
Dylan Bates walks through the front door. Norma Louise can
be heard in the background.
NORMA LOUISE (O.S.)
No, I need this done as quick as
possible.
INT. BATES KITCHEN - CONTD
Dylan walks towards the kitchen. Theres a RATTLE of a
silverware drawer being open, followed by a CLINKING of
cutlery being set on the table.
NORMA LOUISE(CONTD)
He was a patient at Pineview. And
all down payment I gave Dr.Edwards
is gone now.
Dylan stops just outside the kitchen doorway. He backtracks
into the shadow of the hallway. He watches Norma set the
table for dinner and listens intently, with one ear towards
the conversation.

17.
NORMA LOUISE(CONTD)
Ugh. Well, get your people to work
on it faster before I have my
husband shut the rest of that hell
hole down.
As she pulls out a plate from the cabinet, she stops short.
NORMA LOUISE(CONTD)
Yes, Norman was still there before
Dr. Edwards left. When he took all
our money and just--just left! Why
does that matter?
Norma finishes setting the table for three. She stands up
straight, switches her cell phone to her hand, and puts a
hand on her hip. Dylan takes a step into the kitchen.
NORMA LOUISE(CONTD)
You know what, I dont want to make
this difficult, so file my
paperwork so I can get my money
back.
Behind Dylan, in the dark shadows, Alex stands. Dylan
doesnt see him. They both listen to the exchange. Norma
Louise notices the two men. She smiles.
NORMA LOUISE
Or do I have to get my husband,
Officer Romero, involved?
Alex looks pleased. He moves around Dylan, startling him,
and wraps his arms around his wife. Dylan enters the
kitchen.
NORMA LOUISE (CONTD)
(still on the phone)
Well then-- thats all settled.
Hopefully we wont have to drag
this into court.
Alex suddenly lets loose of Norma and backs away. He and
Dylan exchange a worried glance.
NORMA LOUISE(CONTD)
Uh-huh. Thank you. Goodbye.
Norma hangs up and walks over to give Dylan a hug.
NORMA BATES (CONTD)
Hey, you. I didnt expect you back
so soon or I would have set a plate
for two more. Wheres Emma?

18.

DYLAN BATES
She wanted to be alone for awhile.
Listen, Norma, you dont want to
bring this whole thing to court.
NORMA LOUISE
Why not? They deserve to be shut
down after all theyve put us
through.
Alex starts pacing. Dylan watches him before turning back to
Norma.
DYLAN BATES
Because word could get out about
Normans disorder. And we dont
need that to happen. He seems
better.
ALEX ROMERO
Hes right, Norma. We need to
protect Norman. Lets leave
politics out of this. Youll get
your money back.
Norma stops and bites her lip, considering. Alex walks up to
her and kisses her forehead.
ALEX ROMERO
Dont worry, honey. Ill sort it
all out. Itll be alright.
Norma smiles and kisses her husband like a giddy school
girl.
NORMA LOUISE
Well...alright. If you say so, then
I know it will be.
They kiss again and Norma scurries off to the oven to finish
setting the table for dinner.
NORMA LOUISE
Im going to run upstairs to grab
Norman for dinner. You two go ahead
and sit down.
She leaves the kitchen, with a noticeable pep in her step.
Dylan looks at Alex.
DYLAN BATES
What was all that about?

19.

ALEX ROMERO
Nothing. Just--you had a good
point. The only way Norman will get
better is if we keep this in the
family.
DYLAN BATES
No. No, its something else. You
were fine with Norma lashing out at
that place until she mentioned
courts.
Alex looks away. He beings pacing again.
DYLAN BATES (CONTD)
What is it?
Alex stops pacing. His gives Dylan a hard, calculating stare
before rushing up to him and grabbing him by the forearm.
ALEX ROMERO
Not here.
He leads Dylan outside.
EXT. BATES HOUSE - CONTD
Dylan looks taken aback as Alex shuts the front door. He
yanks his arm out of Alexs grip.
ALEX ROMERO
(in a low voice)
More went on the night Dr. Edwards
died than your mother knows.
He looks over Dylans shoulder at the front door. There is a
light CHATTER coming from inside.
ALEX ROMERO
Dr. Edwards didnt run away. Hes
dead. I saw Norman kill him.
DYLAN BATES
Wait, wait. Norman has some mental
confusion, but hes not a killer-ALEX ROMERO
But he is. I saw the whole thing.
How do you think I got stabbed?
He indicates to his left shoulder. Dylan looks around in
disbelief.

20.

ALEX ROMERO (CONTD)

I told Norman and your mother that
Norman blacked out that night. That
he thought I was an intruder and
thats why he stabbed me.
DYLAN BATES
You cant be serious. Why wouldnt
you tell Norma?
ALEX ROMERO
Because-He leads Dylan further down the front steps.
ALEX ROMERO (CONTD)
I have cash stashed. Dont ask me
why, dont ask me how. But its
important that your mother doesnt
know about it.
DYLAN BATES
And you used that money to make it
look like Dr. Edwards took a bunch
of money and ran off.
ALEX ROMERO
Yes, under a fake account. Ill use
what I have left to pay her back.
But now the money doesnt look like
its tied to me. Understand?
Norma Louise suddenly opens the front door.
NORMA LOUISE
What are you two doing out here?
Get inside, dinners ready!
ALEX ROMERO
Well be right in, sweetheart.
Norma blows him a kiss and closes the door.
ALEX ROMERO (CONTD)
Lets keep this between us.
INT. NORMANS BEDROOM - NIGHT
Norman is lying under the covers, reading Oedipus Rex. Hes
already halfway through the book.

21.

NORMAN BATES
"Why should we fear when chance
rules everything/And foresight of
the future there is none;/Tis best
to live at random, as one can.
Norman eyes the black journal that sits on his bedside
table.
NORMAN BATES (CONTD)
"But thou, fear not that marriage
with thy mother/Such things men
have oft have dreams of; but who
cares/The least about them lives
the happiest."
He holds the book in front of him, rereading the passage. He
sets the book down on his lap and then glides his hand under
the covers.
The door opens and Dylan walks in. He stops when he sees
what Norman is doing. Norman quickly brings his hand over
the covers and picks the book back up.
DYLAN BATES
Sorry. Uh-- sorry. I just wanted to
see how you were doing. Catch up.
NORMAN BATES
Oh. Im just reading. Come in,
Dylan.
Dylan turns to leave, but changes his mind and comes back in
the room. Norman sits up.
DYLAN BATES
How did your appointment go, by the
way?
NORMAN BATES
She wants to figure out why I have
blackouts. Which doesnt make sense
since Ive quit having them.
Dylan stands awkwardly, not knowing how to respond.
DYLAN BATES
It doesnt hurt to figure things
out, Norman. Maybe its best so you
can prevent having any more.

22.
NORMAN BATES
Hmmm. Maybe.
Norman gets out of bed. Hes wearing a womans robe. He
walks over to his armoire to change. Dylan stares at the
robe.
NORMAN BATES (CONTD)
The real issue here is Romero,
though.
DYLAN BATES
Norman, what are you wearing?
Norman looks down at the robe. He laughs.
NORMAN BATES
Oh, I guess I thought I put mine
on. How funny.
He takes off the robe and starts to put on a t-shirt.
DYLAN BATES
What was that you said about
Romero?
Norman picks up the robe and stares down at it for a minute
before carefully laying it down on his bed. He walks up to
Dylan.
NORMAN BATES
(whispering)
Romero is up to something. I dont
believe his story about Dr.
Edwards.
Dylan looks distressed. He takes a step back from Norman.
DYLAN BATES
Why not?
Norman hesitates. He looks at his brother with sad eyes.
NORMAN BATES
Because I think hes going to frame
me, Dylan. He wants me locked up so
he can have Mother all to himself!
Norman eyes start to well up.
DYLAN BATES
No, Norman, no. Dr. Edwards stole
millions of dollars and left. It
has nothing to do with you.

23.

Norman suddenly turns angry, but tears roll down his cheeks.
NORMAN BATES
(yelling)
Of course its about me! Hes just
jealous. He thinks I should be
locked up and I know hes planning
it.
Dylan looks surprised by his brothers outburst. Norman
backs away and rushes to his bedside table.
NORMAN BATES (CONTD)
And Im going to prove it.
DYLAN BATES
How?
Norman walks back to Dylan holding the journal.
NORMAN BATES
Im supposed to write in this every
day. Its supposed to monitor my
blackouts. Im going to write what
really happens.
Dylan takes the book from Norman and flips it open. Hes
filled up the first couple of pages.
DYLAN BATES
What do you mean, what really
happens?
Norman takes the book back from Dylan.
NORMAN BATES
Alex came to Dr. Edwards office
that day. I remember. I saw him. I
was angry because I thought he was
there to tell him about the day
before.
DYLAN BATES
What happened the day before?
NORMAN BATES
Mother and Alex came to visit me at
Pineview. They told me they were
married and I yelled at them.
Norman grabs the journal and places it delicately on his

NORMAN BATES (CONTD)

Alex and I got into a bit of a
fight, so Mother wanted to leave.
Then all of a sudden Dr. Edwards is
dead and Mother is missing money?
Norman returns to face Dylan. He shakes his head, sneering.
NORMAN BATES (CONTD)
No, something doesnt add up.
DYLAN BATES
Norman, are you sure about this?
NORMAN BATES (CONTD)
He wont be able to deny it. Just
dont let him fool you, Dylan. I
dont know what hes capable of.
