Shan Duillen weit The organization of my past portfolios had been a minor concern to me when | was in the process of making them. My portfolio from my 1101 University Writing class from last semester really opened my mind toward the different ways and strategies there are to present a portfolio. !am more concerned about the actual writing that needs to be presented in the portfolio rather than the portfolio itself. My writing style still needs to be corrected and tweaked to really be up to the standards of my major andof myself. 1am almost 100% sure ofthe format that my portfolio wl take on and what my plans are for it. has Yr could Shar sore of in tun WP — Sor matiraen it 1s hobpful-o plans wnitten dawn. Sham Dhl wea intend on showing how my writing style has improved through the different works that | will be doing over the semester. By showing my older writings compared to my new writings in my portfolio, | will show the viewer's my changes. With enough work put into my writings, hopefully the readers notice the progress that | plan to make. Although showing persistence throughout my writ ing isnt very important to me, | ike the idea of changing my writing style and method to work with the topic | have at hand. But if| am working on a single topic ! will continue to do so until | believe itis done. To help me do that | will pick a main theme that interest me personally and try to stick with it throughout the portfolio. ‘Web designer skills wll play 2 role in my portfolio because I believe it catches the viewer's eye and holds their attention, Without a flowing order and eye-catching formatting the portfolio would not be up to par with my standards. Writing in different styles isn’t a major key to my portfolio because | believe that everyone has a way of writing, but they just have to work hard at it to make it good. So a particular style ‘of writing is no better than another. My writing will ean towards a professional format and style to keep!’ the portfolio scholarly. | think my mind is very creative and abstract, | would say creativity will not be in my portfolio. Ideas aren't final at this point in my planning but | hope to impress the viewers with a creative and innovative way of displaying a portfolio. yop Shon Dii}Ton. wens, have always thought that the best learning experiences come when you least expect them. during your daily routine. A learning experience that I had this week was going to a barber shop in the ghetto. | know this experience isn’t recommended for everyone but one of my favorite things to do is learning about new subcultures that strive in America. | feel that looking into each subculture keeps your mind open and helps you become a less basis person. What I learned that day was all about another culture and some cultural problems that happen as a kid that grows up in the ghetto. A nice black man named Karios was cutting my hair and talking to me about his life and | too shared parts of my life. As we carried on the conversation another man approached me as Karlos was cutting my hair ‘and began striking up a conversation about old muscle cars, something that | could talk about for days at ‘atime. He told me as he was growing up in the Charlotte ghetto that he stole cars since he was alittle kid, “It’s @ normal thing to learn how to do that as a kid, that’s just something you do” he said. He told ‘me the wide variety of cars he has stolen in his youth and what happens with the cops get after you. It was by far the most interesting conversation | have had with a stranger. | understood why he did those things, it was the way of life for him at the time. The jail time he served was another story, it's like he ‘was trying to scare me throughout the conversation, but | was more fascinated than anything. His learning experiences became my own, not that I plan on stealing cars, but just how someone can change their life around completely and to become a better person. We exchanged information and he invited ‘me down to the drag strip where he works, | also have learned that meeting new people in Charlotte is a crazy experience. Nb fond tine Shan Dhillon wena Peer rey 1ws have always been something that | hated for as long as | can remember. Today in class we were asked to review another group's work and they would review ours. It turned out that the ‘group we were paired with didn’t have anything really planned out at all so we gave them suggestions to what they should cover and talk about when they present or even what they should put into their 7 Dnt 46 LUMfontunate 00 ou dudin'+ neatly get HL UP proposal{/as- team we did very well for what was given tous. Like | have said before, peer reviewing is really a hit or miss, it either works really well or not at all. Our group worked on their paper for a solid 20 mins brainstorming and creating new ideas, everyone had something to say or write down for them. ve never worked with the people from my group before but they seem to understand the term ‘group © work’ really well. Each person is accountable for a different part of the assignments that are completed ‘as a group and if there are any problems that a group member might face, the team understands that’s why we are here. To help each other. | am very happy with the group that | am in, we all work equally and put in our best efforts and that is all | can truly ask of them. The only thing that | can think of that we may need to work on is our brain storming. As a group we are a little quiet but our ideas are usually helpful. Shan Dhillon was So far in the portfolio all my works are starting to come together and flow pretty well. still having a little trouble setting everything up but the end product will still be amazing to me. For example the daily writings that are going to be included in the portfolio are slowly becoming better and better. ‘They are becoming easier to write and more concise with the information that | am including within them. My writing prompts are becoming increasingly better throughout the semester as well. 'm getting better feedback from my instructor, the awesome Lynn Raymond on more of my writing prompts letting me know | am headed in the right direction with my writings. Below is a small chart of the works that will be included in my portfolio thus far in the semester: Subject Strenath Weakness Highlighted Skit Daily Writings 1am able to be creative | Sometimes it is hard to | Brings out the and put whatever apply an example to.a_| creativity in me and examples! want in| certain situation leads to quality these works. because you haven't | writings. lived it. ‘Writing Prompts Works on my ability to | itis more ofa ‘Shows my ability to writing about a prompt | challenge to think think critically about that isn’t asking for —_| through these different topics. examples but more of | questions rather than a what Ithinkon the | free writing subject at hand. ‘The work is slowly coming together and following a similar pattern of topics. The writing prompts are starting to become harder to write and require more thought process as well as the daily writings. Where the daily writings are more of creative thought process. Thus far all the work that | have done for the class is relevant to the portfolio and will be included in it. Other writings that | will do in the future will be determined based on their topic and quality whether they will be included or not. Shan Dhillon wens Often times | find it hard to revise my own work and material. This is mainly because | do my ‘own Work ina way so that | try to leave little room for corrections. Thus when I go back over my work | can’t decide on what needs to be changed or modified. The best way to get revisions done for me is to get another person to look aver my work and compare it to theirs for just to look over it to see if what | put down makes sense. In this project we have to revise different assignments of our choice and | believe that is where the way I revise my work will be shown. As far as my goals for my revisions go, they are fairly straight forward. | want concise work that doesn’t contain any “fluff” wording, and makes my point very clear, just general quality work. Completing the revisions with quality critiques that truly strengthen my writing is my biggest goal, making a difference that is noticeable between drafts. Shan Dhitlon. wee7 Rhetorical knowledge has gone a long way into my semester long project thus far, from just earning how to cite different ways to analyzing text from different perspectives. Using my rhetorical knowledge has helped me write with better consistency and form. | would say the least effective thing we have done in class would be the writing prompts, only because if you have actually done what was assigned does it help you, and even then you are only reviewing what you did, so | didn’t find them very helpful. On the other hand the daily writings in class have been almost fun for me, mainly because they have been about open ended topics that we could choose from which made them more fun and interestifg to write, Being a big basketball fan makes this subject much more interesting for me and | / thik thas what made me really dive int the subject an start ivestigating athe ins and ous the Hornets’. One of the sources that challenged me the most was a review on how the team was ona downward spiral in the early 2000's. It was hard to find a way to incorporate this kind of criticism into the project but then | later decided that not everything the project has to be about how good the team was but rather what the history of the team was and how it relates to the Charlotte area. My first question was a very basic one, l asked my roommates f they liked the Charlotte Hornets and if they think other people like the Hornets as a whole. The responses were straight forward and for the most part all the same, they liked the Hornets and support the team, and thought that the Hornets have a generally good outlook for Charlotte. | then asked about Jeremy Lin and ifthey thought he was a flop pick inthe draft and the answers were mined Two of my roommates thought he was a good pick and he just needs more time on the court to bring out his fll potential. The other roommate said that the rate he is going at now is not looking promising for the team. This led to along, in-depth, conversation about Jeremy Lin and other players on the Hornets. For the most part this conversation went exactly how I thought it would, nothing my roommates said realy surprised me, and for how big of sports fans they each are still no one had anything bad to say about the Hornets.
