Myoriginalgoalwastoshadowadoctorandcompareittoadentistandorthodontist,but
inordertoshadowadoctorIhadtobeonthewaitinglistand/orbe18yearsofagesomygoal

Iwasgoingtodothisduringthe
courseofthegiventimethepersonalprojectwasassigned,inthedentist/orthodontistoffices,and
Iwantedtoachievethisbecauseofmygrandinterestinthemedicalfield.Theglobalcontentthat
connectstomyprojectasawholeis
Scientificandtechnicalinnovation
becauseofthesimple
scienceandtechnologydentistryhasinordertomakeitsperfectandsafeprocedures.This
personalprojectconnectstomebecauseoftheuniqueexperienceswiththedoctorsingettingto
knowhowtoworkthesimplemachinesIvebeendyingtolearnmoreaboutandtheconnection
withthepatientsbecausetheywentthroughthesameexperienceIoncewentthroughwhenIwas
younger.BeforeIstartedmyproject,IwasawareofwhatIwasgoingtoseeandknewabit
abouttheexperiencebecauseIhadoncegonethroughit,butbeingabletoseeitinadifferent
anglewassomethinginterestingtoexamine.WhenthepersonalprojectwasfirstintroducedI
researchedabitofwhatIwantedtodoandIcameacrossshadowingdentistsandIlearnedalot
aboutwhattheirworkdaysareandwhattheydidpriortobeatthelevelofofficiallybeinga
dentist.Beinganopenmindedscholar,Ididinfacthelpsomeofmypeerslookintowhatthey
wantedtodoastheirownpersonalproject.IdowishIhelpedthemabitmoreinchoosingwho
theiradvisorwouldbe.

ThecriteriaIdesignedremainedthesameandwasquitesimpleandeasygoingbecause
ofthesimplicityandinterestmyprojectwas.
Nevertheless,hereisevidenceofmyplanningthroughoutmyproject:

throughouttheprocessofmypersonalprojectasawhole.

explainmyexperiencedoingwhatIdidandgivethemanoverviewofwhatitsliketoshadow
someonesoimportant.

Beforestartingthiscomplexproject,Iwasntveryorganizedwithmyworkand
didntcompletethingsontimebutthankstoManagebacandthePersonalProject
packet,IgettoseewhatIneedtocompleteinagiventimeandhowmuchits
goingtotakemetofulfiltherequirementatthebestofmyability.
2) WhatselfmanagementskillsandIdevelopingthroughouttheproject?
NowthatIgettomanagemytimeinabettermanner,Ihavelearnednotto
procrastinatebecauseManagebacwillrecognizewhensomethingisdueandifits
late.Also,keepingaphysicaljournalisalwayshelpfulbecauseitsalmostlikea
roughdraftofideasandthingstoaddtothedigitalcopyonManagebac.
3) Whatchallenges/obstaclesdidIencounter?HowdidIovercomethesechallenges?
Istruggledhavingtocreateandfinisheachdocumentwiththeneededinformation
everyFridaymorning,soIlearnedtostartitaweekbeforehandandhaveitready
sowhenitneedstobeturnedinoravailabletosee,Illhaveithandy.
4) WhathaveIdiscoveredaboutmyselfasalearner?Howwillthishelpmeinthefuture?
AsapreIBstudent(oraScholar),IhavelearnedtowriteasmuchasIcanwith
extremedetailsbecausewhensuchamassiveprojectneedstobeturnedinandI
wasgivenpracticallythewholeyeartoworkonit,Iwillknowtoturninmybest
workandtoimpressmyaudience.Thiswillhelpmeinthefuturebecausemy

ImanagedmytimeinawayIhaveneverdonebeforebecauseIpushedmyselftobeas
organizedascouldbeandattemptedtoatleastdoasinglepartofmyprojecteachweekendso
thattheprocesswouldntbetoolongasitseemedtobe.Astheweekscamealong,Ikeptupwith
myplanandwhenthebusyweekendscamealong,Ididmypersonalprojectduringtheweekto
makeupfortheworkthatImissed.IdowishIsharedmypersonalselfmanagementskillswith
myotherpeersbecauseinthebeginningofApriltheyhadnothingdoneyetincludingtheiractual
assignment!

TakingAction
Aftershadowingmydentistandorthodontist,Icreatedasimpleandselfexplanatory
websitewhatincludedinfomyexperience,acomparisonandcontrastofthedentistand
orthodontist,myprocessjournals,andfinally,thefinalreport.Beforebeginningtoshadowmy
dentistandorthodontist,IthoughtmakingthewebsitewouldbeeasygoingbecauseIoncemade
awebsiteinthe8thgrade.Finallybeginningmywebsite,Iendedupaskingmanyforhelp
becauseIforgotexactlyhowtoworkthesiteIwasusingtocreatemypersonalwebsite.Manyof
mypeershadnoideawhattomaketheirfinalproductofandendedupmakingaposterbutIfeel
thatifIsuggestedtheideaofmakingawebsite,itwouldhavebeenwayeasierthanmakinga
physicalposter.Whenstartingtheproject,Ihadtocommunicateandworkonmysocialskills
whentalkingtothedentist/orthodontist,thenurses,andespeciallythepatientsbecauseIneeded
tomakethemknowmypurposeofbeingthereandwhyIwassointerestedinthedentistryfield.
Throughouttheproject,IimprovedimmenselymycommunicativeandsocialskillsbecauseI
wasmoreopentoaskquestionsandIwasmorecuriouswhenthedoctorsandthenursestalked
abouttheirjobandhowtheygotthere.Someofmypeershadsocialpersonalprojectsand
neededhelpcominguptopeopleandaskingquestionsandIdowishIhelpedthembecomemore
comfortablebylettingthemaskmequestionsandpracticebeforegoingouttothepublic.

Reflecting
Theoutcomeofaftershadowingthedoctorsandthewebsite,ImadesureIimplanted
mostandallofmydesignedcriteriatofitmygoalinascloselyaspossible.Inthebeginningof
theshadowingexperience,agrandstrengthwasaskingmydentistquestionsabouttheprocedure
butoneoftheweaknesseswasaskingthepatientquestionsabouttheirexperienceandhowthey
feltastheprocedurewentalong.IbelieveIcouldhaveimprovedmyfinaloutcomeof
shadowingbybecomingmoreopenmindedandabletotakerisksespeciallywhenIwasnervous
tospeaktothepatient.Onechallengewasgettingtounderstandthereasonbehindwhythe
patientsgottheproceduretheydid.Iwondered
whyaretheygettingafilling?Didtheyhave
cavities?Wasitsomethingsomeonehadtogetwhentheywereaspecificage?.
Afterthepatient
left,Iaskedthenursesthequestionsthatwereramblinginmyheadandtheyansweredindetail
andgavemanyexamples.Ilearnedalotabouttheglobalcontext,Scientificandtechnical
innovationbecausethedoctorswentindepthinthesciencebehindthestepsandproceduresthey
took.IhavedevelopedandlearnedmanynewsubjectswhenIfinishedmyprojectandItookin
considerationalloftheI.B.LearnerProfileTraitstokeepmeintrackinordertohavethebest
projectIcouldmakeonmyown.Forexample,IusedthetraitRiskTakerbecauseIputmyself
outthereandaskedmanyoutrageousquestionsthatseemedinterestingtomeandattemptedto
speaktoasmanypeopleaspossibleduringmyshadowingappointments.Overall,Ifeelthatmy
personalprojectasawholehaspersuadedmetotakeonacareerthatIseemtonowbe
passionateaboutthankstomyshadowingappointmentsandtheastonishingadvicethedoctors
gavemeduringmyvisit.Inthefuture,Iseemyselfstudyingandpreparingtomajorinamedical
fieldandgettingtoexperiencethisnow,Ifeelthatitwillhelpmewithmyfuturelearning.

Todaywasthefirstofficialmeetingwithmyadvisor(Mrs.Atherley)andshesreallysupportive
andhadamazingideasofwhattoincludeinmyproject.Shehelpedmeorganizeandpreparefor
whatstocome.IdontthinkIamgoingtostartmyprojectyetbutIwillabsolutelyinvestigate
andfigureoutmyplan.

TodayIcalledbothmyOrthodontistandDentisttomakeanappointmenttoshadowthemandI
scheduledmyappointmentonSaturday19,2016andalsoTuesday22,2016.Imthinkingabout
cancelingtheappointmentonTuesdaysimplybecauseIhaveschoolthatdaybutIllseehow
thingsgooninthenextfewdays.Imextremelynervousaboutseeingpatientsgetinjectedand
seeingteethfillingsbecauseImnotreallyusetoseeingthattypeofthingshappentomeand
especiallyothers.

TodayIwenttomyfirstshadowingcoursewithmyDentistanditwasextremelyinterestingto
learntheprocessofbecomingadentistandthedailyworklifeofbeingadentist.Cominginto
theofficeImetupwithmydentistandheshowedmearoundhispersonalofficeandtalked
aboutthepatientsIwasgoingtoseetodayandtheprocedurethatwasgoingtobedoneonthem.
Lateron,heaskedoneofthenursestoshowmearoundthelabandwhereallthesupplieswere
kept,where/howtheycleanedtheirsupplies,andallthepaperworkthatcamewithonesingle

patient.Oneofthenursesgavememanypamphletsaboutdentalcareandwhy/howmanydental
issuesderivefrom.Oneofthemostinterestingprocedureswastheteethfillingswithapatient
thathadformerdentalproblemsbecausehedidntgotothedentistforabout2years.Histeeth
werentinthebestconditiondothedentistnumbeduphisgums,drilledintohismolarsand
injectedawhitethicksubstancetopreventfutureinfectionsorproblemswiththepatient'steeth.
Thoughthiswasadifferentexperienceforme,Ilearnedalotabouthowteethcanbedamagedso
easilywithoutthecareofaprofessional.

weekendssoIhadtotakeafewhoursoffofschooltoshadowmyorthodontistforawhile.

Superlate,butIfinallygottoshadowmyOrthodontist!ItwassuchanamazingexperienceandI
feelasifthatexperiencemadememakemydecisiononwhatcareerpathIwanttotakeinthe
future.IwasamazedathoweasyitwasfortheDoctorandthenursetodotheprocedureof
puttingonbraces.Beingaformerpatientthathadbracesforalongperiodoftime,Igottosee
thingsinaperspectiveIneversawthingsbefore.Ratherthanseeingthingshappeningtome,I
sawthemhappeningtoanotherpersonandIgottoseethewaythegluewasmixedinandhow
thebracketswereputinandmadestiffwithalightwithaspecificwavelength.Itwasamazing
howtheorthodontistknewsomuchabouthisequipmentandthesciencebehindit.Afterthe
braceswerecompletelydoneonthepatient,thedoctoraskedmeifIwantedsomebeforeand

afterbracespicturesofmyselfandhewasevengenerousenoughtoofferanxrayofmyteeth
justforthefunofit.ThexraywassointerestingtomebecauseIgottoseemywholeskulland
myteethinadetailedmannerIhaveneverseenbefore.Ilovedhowheincorporatedmany
physicstermswithinhisexplanationsandIconnectedittomy10ScholarsPhysicscourseIm
takingrightnow.Overall,thiswasoneofmyfavoriteexperiencesyetandImexcitedtosee
howmypersonalprojectisgoingtocomeout!

myproject.Mrs.AtherleyhelpedalotwithbrainstormingespeciallywhenIdidntknowwhatto
includeinmyfinalproduct.Shegavememanyvaluablesuggestionsthatwillmakemyproject
lookamazingandconnectedverymuchtoI.B.asawhole.
