GIBRALTAR. Crowds of wellwishers lined the route from
Casemates Square and down
Main Street on the morning of
Saturday 23 April for the annual
parade by the Royal Engineers
Association, which is held to
commemorate the Corps having been granted the Freedom
of Gibraltar.
Members of the Association
and Royal Engineers veterans
marched proudly from Casemates to the statue of the Royal
Engineer outside the Cathedral
of Saint Mary the Crowned, and
the mayor of Gibraltar, Adolfo
Canepa, took the salute in front
of the Parliament building.
The colourful parade was followed by a reception.

GIBRALTAR. The government and

people of Gibraltar made Thursday
21 April a day to remember, for Queen
Elizabeth IIs 90th birthday. This British Overseas Territory was determined to mark the occasion in style.
First, a 21-gun salute rang out from
Grand Battery House at midday, fired
in the presence of the governor, General Edward Davis.
Then, in the evening, to coincide with beacons being lit in numerous locations in the UK, Gibraltar also lit its own beacon at the
Moorish castle.
The sides of the castle were also

colourfully illuminated that evening

with the letters HM, a picture of
the Queen, and the number 90.
But, perhaps the most spectacular tribute of all, was the laser projection throughout the night of the
Queens profile onto the north face
of the Rock, with the words Queen
of Gibraltar below.
This was a historic occasion and
one of which Gibraltar was very
proud. There were, however, complaints from some that the tributes
on the Rock had been ignored by the
British media, which appeared to focus almost exclusively on the UK
celebrations.
