Answer all questions

1. Classify power system transients based upon their origin.


2. Distinguish between lumped and distributed parameter nature of equipment and their
applicability in system analysis.
3. Give an expression for the number of strokes intercepted by 100 km line per year
in terms of isokeraunic level.
4. What are the circuit conditions for the occurrence of ferroresonance?
5. Write down the expression for equivalent GMR of a N-conductor bundle.
6. Explain the physical interpretation of 0 transformation.
7. What are the distinguishing technical features of underground cables?
8. Sketch a cut-away view of self-contained oil-filled type cable and identify various layers.
9. What are the salient features a typical digital computer program for line parameter
evaluation should possess?
10. Give the equivalent circuit with relevant expressions obtained by applying trapezoidal
rule to the voltage equation of an inductor.

11(A)(i) Give the second order wave equations for propagation of the voltage and current in
a transmission line and their general solution.

(ii) Verify and discuss the general solution of the second order wave equation. Your
discussion should include physical interpretation and various combinations.

11.(B) (i) Draw the lattice diagram for voltage when a single-phase line open-circuited at the
far end is energized by a constant magnitude DC source.

12(A) For a short-line fault show that the waveform on the line side of the breaker is a
sawtooth with a peak-to-peak amplitude of twice the source voltage magnitude.

12(B) Explain the phenomenon occurring in energizing a single-phase open-ended line from
a sinusoidal source. Sketch the receiving end idealized voltage waveform. What causes the
distortion of the idealized waveform when a practical three-phase line is energized?
13(A)For the conductor configuration shown in figure calculate
(i) The inductance matrix for 1 km length of the line assuming that the line is untransposed.
(ii)The same when the line is transposed.

14(A)Explain the different components that make up the loop impedances of a single-core
self-contained cable consisting of core, sheath and armour.

14(B)Starting from the loop equations of a single-core self-contained cable derive the series
impedance equations suitable for interfacing with EMTP.
15(A)Considering a typical thirteen-conductor example with a single ground wire explain the
process of eliminating the ground wire and derive the expression for the resultant impedance
matrix.

15(B) Considering a single node of a general network to which a resistor, an inductor, a
capacitor and a distributed parameter line are connected describe the method of transient
solution employed in EMTP.
