Dear Judges:
Just four years ago, I decided to accept a spot in the Legal Studies Academy Class of 2016. With
each passing year since then, I felt the most ominous academy requirement of them all
approaching closer and closer: senior project. I wondered how I could possibly write a research
paper so long and accomplish a project so great. Now, I look back, realizing that I accomplished
both of those things, and more than that, I enjoyed it.
My inspiration for my topic arose from my personal passions, as well as past experiences. I
became familiar with genetically modified organisms (GMOs) while researching the Monsanto
Company, one of the main corporations responsible for GMOs, for my junior year Ethics paper. I
was horrified by the amount of political control that biotech companies like Monsanto have over
the seed industry, which has created an array of economic, political, societal, and health
problems in the United States. I also happened upon various cases and proposed laws dealing
with the topic; given that this topic was both rich in law material and dealt with my passion for
healthy eating, I was excited to commit to it for the next year.
For my project itself, I was able to combine my passion for healthy eating and working with
young students by going back to my elementary school to teach two classes. I was beyond
thrilled to see that the students were so engaged in what I was passionate about.
This leads me to say that I truly enjoyed this experience, in addition to all of the unique
experiences that I have had as a member of the Legal Studies Academy. I cannot wait to take the
knowledge and experience that I have gained while being in this academy to the University of
Virginia in the fall.
Thank you for taking the time to browse my website and attend my presentation. I hope that
through my work, I am able to communicate my passion to you.
Sincerely,
Chloe Cohen
