INSERT: TV SCREEN
A CNN breaking news report showing footage of the Boston
Marathon bombing.
An obviously bewildered REPORTER speaks to the viewers, a
shocked look in his eyes.
REPORTER
The Boston Globe released a
dramatic video of the actual twin
bombings, uh, near the finish line
at the Boston Marathon. The video
is disturbing. Im gonna play it
and...and, uh let it, uh, youll
hear the first explosion, and then
a few seconds later youll hear the
second explosion. Ill play it, and
then were gonna, uh, assess what
we just saw. Watch this.
Video footage of the Boston Marathon, and then a sudden LOUD
EXPLOSION which halts the runners.
People SCRAMBLE for safety in the midst of the smoke. The
shaky camera briefly picks up images of dismembered runners
writhing on the ground in pools of their own blood.
Then, another EXPLOSION booms from the distance, sending the
people in an even greater panic.
Police officers run into the scene, cries for help ECHOING
from all sides.
The fear in the cameraman is palpable as he films the chaos.
CAMERAMAN (O.S.)
Oh my God. Oh my God.

FADE IN:
EXT. TRAIN TRACKS - NIGHT
BRAD (50s, balding) staggers along a train track in a drunken
stupor. He carries a bagged bottle of some kind of liquor.
In between intermittent burping and incoherent mumbling, he
maintains the rhythm of a familiar melody.
BRAD
(singing)
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
(takes a swig)
T'was Grace that taught my heart to
fear. And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear
The hour I first believed.
Brad suddenly halts when he notices a figure on the track up
ahead.
BRAD (CONTD)
What the fuck?
He initially approaches with apprehension, relaxing himself
with a long swig from the brown bag.
The closer he gets, the more clear the figure becomes. It is
a dead body.
BRAD (CONTD)
Hey, buddy! Might not be such a
swell fucking idea.
Brad kneels beside the body, belonging to a YOUNG MALE,
flowing brown hair escaping beneath a beanie cap. Brad taps
his shoulder, receiving no response.
BRAD (CONTD)
You alright, buddy?
He turns the body over, revealing a stomach ripped apart by
fresh stab wounds and dead, empty eyes.
BRAD (CONTD)
Fuck. Jesus Christ. Its a fucking
kid.

3.
Brad stares at the boys hands. They are caked in crimson. He
feels for a pulse. Nothing.
Suddenly, a TRAIN HORN is heard up ahead. Brad looks up to
see a train quickly approaching them.
Fuck me!

BRAD (CONTD)

As the train shows no signs of stopping, Brad attempts to

drag the dead body off of the train track.
He trips on the rocks, falling to the floor. With the train
about ten feet away from them, Brad gets on his knees and
pulls the body off the track, falling backwards.
The train SPEEDS past them. Brad takes a breath of relief.

INT. BAR - NIGHT
The bar is relatively empty. Hums of IRISH FOLK MUSIC echo
through the small establishment.
JEREMY (20s, handsome, muscular) cleans the tables with a wet
cloth.
Watching his every move from a dark booth in the back of the
bar is KIM WINTER (30s, raven-haired).
JEREMY
You planning on leaving anytime
soon?
A beat.
KIM
Are you not enjoying my company,
Jer-bear?
Jer-bear?

JEREMY

Kim drunkenly laughs.

KIM
Fine, Jeremy. Come here, have a
seat.

4.

Nah.
Come on.

JEREMY
KIM

JEREMY
Ive gotta finish up before the
next batch of drunken assholes show
up.
KIM
They come here to get piss-drunk,
not inspect the stains on your
tables.
JEREMY
Nowadays people are getting sued
left and right, Kimmy.
Kimmy?

KIM

JEREMY
Now you know how that feels.
KIM
A couple minutes of talking wont
get you sued, I promise.
(pulls out cigarettes)
Ive got cigarettes.
JEREMY
Alright, fine. One smoke.
Jeremy goes over and sits at her booth. Kim lights her own
cigarette and then lights his.
JEREMY (CONTD)
Im trying to quit this shit too.
KIM
Arent we all?
They silently stare at each other as they blow clouds of
smoke.
JEREMY
What, did you call me over so we
could have a staring contest?
Nope.

KIM

5.
JEREMY
Then what do you have in mind?
CUT TO:
INT. BAR (MENS BATHROOM) - NIGHT
Kim is bent over a sink with her skirt up as a red and sweaty
Jeremy vigorously THRUSTS behind her. He MOANS in pleasure.
JEREMY
Oh fuck! Kim! You fucking like
that? Huh?
As Jeremy comes to a loud climax, Kim looks at herself in the
mirror, emotionless.
INT. KIMS APARTMENT (BEDROOM) - DAY
It is early in the morning.
Kim wakes up to the sound of her ALARM CLOCK, immediately
holding her head in pain.
Ah, fuck.

KIM

She sits up, her hair ruffled.

INT. KIMS APARTMENT (BATHROOM) - DAY
Kim takes a warm shower, looking down at the water dropping
from her hair into the drain.
INT. KIMS APARTMENT (BEDROOM) - DAY
Kim buttons up her white shirt and puts on a small coat over
it, now ready for business.
She picks up a Boston Police badge from the night table and
hooks it onto herself.
INT. CAPTAIN QUAIDS OFFICE - DAY
The office is covered with family pictures and finger
paintings.
Kim sits uncomfortably on a stiff leather chair across from
CAPTAIN LEONARD QUAID (50s, black, stern).

6.
QUAID
Been getting sleep?
KIM
Like a baby.
QUAID
Greenwood said you decided to stay
a little extra. That true?
KIM
Didnt have a ride.
QUAID
(laughs)
Jesus. Youre like my fucking
teenage daughter. You know that?
KIM
Would you prefer it if I drove all
fucked up?
QUAID
You couldnt take a cab?
KIM
I did, just not the minute
everybody else left.
Quaid rises from his seat, adjusting his pants. He walks
toward a small window in the far corner of the office,
peaking outward.
QUAID
Havent made a case lately, Kim.
KIM
Bit of a blunt assessment.
How so?

QUAID

KIM
Not factoring in the circumstances.
QUAID
Youre condition.
KIM
How many times I gotta tell you?
Im not a fucking alcoholic.

7.
QUAID
That wasnt what I was talking
about. Half the fucking precinct
are alcoholics, I can give a shit
less.
KIM
Then what were you talking about?
QUAID
Weve got the same problem, Kim.
Perhaps to a lesser extent on my
part.
KIM
Now you lost me.
QUAID
We see ghosts.
KIM
I thought I was supposed to be the
drunk here.
QUAID
Know what stoicism is, Kim?
KIM
All due respect, Captain, I just
wanna know when Im gonna start
working real cases again.
QUAID
Most men in your shoes, theyd give
up. Let alone a woman. No offense.
KIM
None taken.
QUAID
Id never expect such resiliency.
Not from a brother, a best
friend...but were different. Were
public servants. People like you
and me, we arent allowed to hurt.
Your pain aint gonna show in the
stats. You catch my drift, Kim?
KIM
For what its worth, Captain, Im
not the only one in a slump.

8.
QUAID
No shit, but that doesnt change
the fact that youre a fucking
mess.
Kim leans forward.
KIM
You know what Ive given to this
department.
QUAID
Thats all been duly noted.
Quaid goes back over to his desk and pours himself a glass of
whiskey.
QUAID (CONTD)
Look, I know I sound like a broken
record by now, but Ill say it
again. You were a good cop. Hell,
youre probably still a good
fucking cop. But this precinct
cant have another scandal on its
han-KIM
Making me do bullshit case after
bullshit case hasnt done either of
us any fucking good. So please,
enough beating around the fucking
bush and let me do my fucking job
for once.
QUAID
What the fuck do you think this is,
Kim? Law and fucking Order? What
youve been doing for the past year
is police work. Jesus Christ,
youre acting like its my fucking
fault youre in this predicament.
KIM
How about I prove it to you?
QUAID
You know my answer, Kim.
KIM
No Im not talking about anything
current.
QUAID
A cold case?

9.
KIM
Of your choice.
A beat.
QUAID
Alright Ill tell you what. I have
a case thats been laying around
for the past year or so. Hasnt
gained any traction since.
Quaid opens his drawer and pulls out a manila folder. He
hands it to Kim and she flips through it.
QUAID (CONTD)
April 16, 2013. Bum named Brad
Zegorski finds one Justin Parker
dead on Track 61 near Eastborough.
The kid was sixteen and according
to autopsy, a junkie. Stabbed six
times in the stomach. No
fingerprints.
KIM
Did you say April 16?
QUAID
Yep. Now you can see why this case
is closed.
KIM
So why this?
QUAID
His father still calls here four or
five times a month. I feel bad for
the poor fella but we cant do
nothing.
KIM
The father a junkie too?
QUAID
Quite the opposite. Hes in real
estate. Pillar of the community
from what I hear.
KIM
What if theres nothing?
QUAID
Im not asking you to solve this.
This is about proving to me that
you still have what it takes.

10.
KIM
I assume Im working at my leisure?
Two weeks.

QUAID

KIM
Sounds fair.
INT. FOUR LEAF BAR - NIGHT
A small, dimly lit establishment. The loud BLABBERING of
DRUNKEN PEOPLE fills the room.
A WAITRESS puts down drinks for DETECTIVE MAX HOLM (40s) and
Kim as they sit across from each other at a booth.
KIM
A fucking junkie, can you believe
it?
MAX
Well whatd you expect?
KIM
One fuck-up and he treats me like
Im the village idiot.
MAX
Just be glad the fat fuck didnt
fire you when he had a chance.
Kim takes a sip, staring at the table for a beat.
KIM
You know? Sometimes I regret it.
A beat.
MAX
Winter. Look at me. You looking?
She looks at him.
MAX (CONTD)
You did the right. Fucking. Thing.
KIM
For what? Been walking on tightrope
ever since the suspension. All it
takes is one more fuck-up and Im
out.

11.
MAX
Well thats a given. Nevertheless
you did nothing I wouldnt do
myself in that situation.
He takes a drink.
KIM
Its just fucking degrading, thats
all.
MAX
What? The suspension?
KIM
No, the case. Chasing some junkies
ghost because a father refuses to
move the fuck on.
MAX
But youre still taking it, right?
KIM
Do I have any other choice?
She takes a long drink.
INT. OBSERVATION ROOM - DAY
Kim is chatting with DETECTIVE SEUNG (30s, Korean-American)
as they stand in front of an acrylic glass partition.
On the other side of the one-way mirror is the interrogation
room, in which DETECTIVE RAMIREZ (30s, Hispanic) interviews a
frightened SUSPECT, gesticulating wildly and spewing curse
words.
KIM
Sure you got the time? Ramirez
looks like hes taking it pretty
personal.
SEUNG
Its his technique.
KIM
What? Giving the suspect a heart
attack?
Seung laughs. Ramirez FLIPS the table over.

12.
SEUNG
Thats new.
(to Kim)
So what can I help you with?
KIM
I read the case file. Pretty
standard stuff.
SEUNG
No new witnesses I presume?
KIM
Still just the bum who found him.
He doesnt know much other than
that, plus no ones seen him since
his interview.
SEUNG
You think he knew more than he let
on?
KIM
Chances are, no.
SEUNG
Yeah he didnt seem like he was all
there when I interviewed him.
(a beat)
Wanna know my ten cents?
KIM
Your ten cents is why Im here.
SEUNG
Its all a wild goose chase. Hell,
Captain probably knows it too.
Trust me when I say that if this
were a dead black kid from Roxbury,
this case would have been called
what it is. A drug deal gone bad.
The two watch the ordeal in the interrogation room. Ramirez
puts the table back and gives the suspect a pen and paper.
KIM
Whats this guy in for anyway?
SEUNG
Killed his pregnant girlfriend and
kept her dead corpse in his bathtub
for a month.

13.

Jesus.

KIM

She takes a look at the empty eyes of the suspect as he signs

the paper.
EXT. SUBURBAN NEIGHBORHOOD - DAY
Kims beat-up sedan pulls into the driveway of a two-story
house in the middle of a Boston suburb.
She gets out of the car, gazing at the affluent neighborhood
in amazement.
INT. QUINNS HOUSE (LIVING ROOM) - DAY
QUINN PARKER (40s, baggy eyes, bearded) plays the opening
notes to Beethovens Moonlight Sonata on a large, dusty
piano.
He is hunched over the piano, constantly messing up the song
and retracing his steps.
There is a doorbell RING. Quinn quickly stands and runs to
the door, opening it to see Kim.
KIM
Quinn Parker?
QUINN
You the detective?
KIM
Im Detective Kim Winter, yes. May
I come in?
QUINN
Of course. Please, please. Make
yourself at home.
Kim comes into the house and follows Quinn. The place is
rather sparse despite its size, consisting of only
utilitarian items.
INT. QUINNS HOUSE (KITCHEN) - DAY
Quinn pours Kim a cup of tea.
Thank you.

KIM

14.
He sits across from her.
QUINN
I hope you like tea. Im not much
of a coffee person.
KIM
Its good. Thank you.
A beat. There is a sadness about Quinns eyes which Kim picks
up on, looking at him with sympathy.
QUINN
Definitely took you people long
enough. I know its not your-KIM
Its fine. Id feel the same way
myself. You play often?
Excuse me?
The piano.

QUINN
KIM

QUINN
Oh. Well no, not really. My wife
did. It was hers. Now it just
collects dust.
KIM
Wheres your wife?
QUINN
Your file didnt say?
KIM
No. Why? What happened to her?
A beat.
QUINN
She passed away...uh...about three
months after Justins...
KIM
Was she also...
QUINN
No, no. Wasnt like that.
Im sorry.

KIM

15.
QUINN
So is this case officially
reopened?
KIM
We never close unsolved homicides.
We just...
QUINN
Put them on hold?
KIM
Right. I admire your persistence
though, Mr. Parker.
QUINN
All Im left with is persistence,
Detective. Tell me something. Why
now?
KIM
You want a reason?
QUINN
After a whole year of hearing back
nothing from you people, youre
damn right I need a reason.
KIM
All due respect, Mr. Parker-QUINN
Quinn. My names Quinn.
KIM
All due respect, Quinn, Im not in
charge of what cases gets followed
through and what cases dont. Im
just doing my job. I feel the
utmost sympathy for you, and the
fact that you were forced to wait a
year for the answers frankly makes
me sick to my stomach. But Im here
now.
QUINN
Did you see...what they did to him?
A beat.
KIM
Yes. Yes I did.

16.
QUINN
The cops who questioned me. They
told me it was probably a mugging.
Is that what you think?
KIM
I dont know yet.
QUINN
There was no way this was a
mugging, Detective. When someone
does you like that, they want a
fucking hell of a lot more than
your pocket change.
A beat.
Im sorry.

QUINN (CONTD)

KIM
Theres nothing to be sorry about.
QUINN
Six-fucking-teen. What could
possibly drive a person to do
something like that to a fucking
kid?
KIM
I have a few que-QUINN
Lovely ring.
What? Oh.

KIM

Kim puts her hands under the table.

Husband?

QUINN

KIM
Has your...uh...opinion regarding
Justins behavior in the days
leading to his death remained the
same?
QUINN
I didnt offend you, did I?
KIM
Can you please answer my question?

17.
QUINN
Im sorry, what was the question?
KIM
Justins mood, his temperament. Was
he worried, scared? Anything you
told Detective Seung that needs
amending? Anything worth adding?
QUINN
You dont wanna talk about your
husband, do you.
KIM
This isnt about me. This is about
your dead son. And frankly, at this
rate were going, were not gonna
mak-QUINN
No. As much as it pains me to say,
Detective, my answers havent
changed. Im not a step closer to
finding out why some son of a bitch
stabbed my son to death than I was
KIM
In that case, heres my card.
(gives Quinn card)
Call me if-QUINN
Trust me, Im familiar with the
procedure.
Right.

KIM

QUINN
And I extend my apologies.
KIM
You dont-QUINN
No, here you are, trying to help me
get closure once and for all and I
just act like an asshole. Christ,
to be honest, I dont even remember
the last time I looked someone in
the eyes like this.
A beat. Kim looks at her tea, and then back at Quinn.

18.
QUINN (CONTD)
Something wrong?
KIM
My husband died. I still wear the
ring.
Quinn holds up his left hand, on it, a wedding ring. They
stare at each other in mutual understanding.
QUINN
Ill call. We can talk.
Right.

KIM

EXT. APARTMENT ROOFTOP - NIGHT

Kim sits alone on a lawn chair, city skyline clear in the
distance. Her legs are perched on a concrete ledge at the
roofs edge.
She drinks from a bottle of scotch. Up ahead near the ledge
is GREG WINTER (30s, tall) wearing runners clothing and
doing stretches.
Greg turns to her.
GREG
Hey there, Kimmy.
KIM
Hey there, handsome.
GREG
Stop being lazy. Come here. Stretch
with me.
KIM
(laughs)
Youre not...real, Greg.
Come on.

GREG

He runs up to her and takes her hands. She stumbles off the
chair.
GREG (CONTD)
Upsy-daisy.
Greg leads Kim to the ledge. They watch the beautiful city
lights together.

19.
KIM
I miss you. Every day.
GREG
You think Id make it to the end?
Kim goes in to kiss Greg, but he FADES AWAY, causing her to
fall on the ledge. She catches her grip, looking down at the
streets below.
KIM
Maybe later, Greg. Maybe later.
She stumbles back onto her chair.
INT. ICE HOCKEY RINK - DAY
WILL MCFRY (18, scrawny, short) and JESSE GILLEN (17, tall,
muscular) play a mean-spirited game of ice hockey.
Will is diminutive but quick, attempting to go around the
hulking Jesse, leaving the latter exhausted.
WILL
You like that, motherfucker? You
talk shit but you cant play for
shit.
JESSE
Fuck you, little faggot.
Jesse attempts to shove Will, however he DODGES him, making
him HIT the wall.
JESSE (CONTD)
Fucking how!?
He recovers and skates after Will, who is going toward the
goal. Jesse is quickly gaining on him.
WILL
Pick up the pace, cocksucker! Im
almost ther-Jesse TRIPS Will with his stick, making him FALL to the icy
floor.
JESSE
All talk, motherfucker.
He takes his puck and SHOOTS it into the goal.

20.

Oh!

JESSE (CONTD)

WILL
(standing up)
The fuck you celebrating for?
JESSE
Yo what time is it?
WILL
Fuck I dunno. You think Im gonna
fucking bring my phone in here? I
thought you said you were free.
JESSE
I gotta be home by one.
WILL
So youre not coming to Jacksons
party?
Nah.

JESSE

WILL
Its gonna be fucking lit.
KIM (O.S.)
Does that mean what I think it
means?
The two boys turn their attention to Kim, who stands outside
the rink, watching them.
WILL
Fucks this bitch.
JESSE
I dunno, but she better be ready to
run her pockets, fucking creeping
up and shit.
KIM
Run my pockets? My, this
neighborhood has really kissed the
abyss.
JESSE
Kissed the what?
Kim holds her badge up as the boys move toward her.

21.
KIM
Theres the contents of my pockets.
Satisfied?
They inspect the badge.
WILL
Fuck its a cop.
KIM
Dont worry, Im not here to make
any arrests.
JESSE
Then what? You just like watching
sweaty dudes play hockey?
She laughs.
KIM
Which one of you dickheads is Will
McFry?
It--

JESSE

WILL
Nah, he aint here.
KIM
(laughs)
Future of America, right here.
Listen, numb-nuts I could easily
ask for a picture.
WILL
Fuck you want, cop?
KIM
I just wanna talk. Share some
meaningful dialogue.
WILL
(to Jesse)
I knew it, she is a fucking thirsty
bitch.
(to Kim)
Lady, if you wanted to suck my
cock, you couldve just asked.
KIM
Got a magnifying glass?
Will and Jesse laugh.

22.
WILL
Fucking getting salty now, huh?
KIM
Im assuming youre Will?
WILL
Thats right, I am.
KIM
Im here to ask you a few questions
about Justin Parker.
The boys become serious.
WILL
I thought that shit was over.
KIM
Itll be over when an arrest is
made.
JESSE
Fucking took you assholes long
enough.
KIM
(to Will)
If you wanna see your friend get
justice, you best talk to me.
WILL
Well go ahead.
KIM
Id prefer some privacy. Unless
youre interested in a trip to the
station.
Will nods to Jesse.
WILL
Work on your fucking shots.
JESSE
Suck a dick.
Jesse goes off.
CUT TO:
Kim and Will sit at the benches, watching Jesse practice
taking shots.

23.
Will pulls out a cigarette and lights it.
WILL
Hope you dont mind.
KIM
Not at all. So you and Justin were
close.
WILL
He was at my place every day. Shit,
after a while he started calling my
parents mom and dad.
KIM
Were you surprised when he died?
WILL
Fuck yeah I was surprised. Dont
always find out youre friends
been found on a fucking train track
with his fucking guts spilled out.
KIM
Was he the type of person who
would...find himself in shady
situations.
WILL
He was...I mean yeah wed fuck
around and shit.
KIM
Whats your definition of fucking
around?
WILL
Wed like, you know, smoke pot and
play Black Ops 2 and shit like
that. Nothing too fucking sketchy.
Play what?

KIM

WILL
Its a game.
KIM
He had a drug problem, right?
WILL
Shouldnt you know that already?

24.
KIM
All I know was that he had heroin
in his system when he was found
dead.
WILL
He sometimes showed up fucked up on
oxy, but I didnt know nothing
about him fucking around with
heroin.
KIM
So he kept it a secret?
WILL
Shit, I dunno. Anyway, what
happened to the Asian and the
Mexican?
Vacation.

KIM

WILL
What is it? Their honeymoon?
Kim smiles. Will stamps out his cigarette and reaches into
his pocket.
Fuck.
What?

WILL (CONTD)
KIM

WILL
That was my last one.
She pulls out a box of cigarettes and offers him one.
WILL (CONTD)
What do you know? A cop when you
need one.
Will lights the cigar.
KIM
Alright, lets continue.
WILL
Whats the point of this?
Zipperhead already asked me all
this shit.

25.
KIM
Watch your fucking mouth. Seung
tried. So am I. Im retracing his
steps. Seeing if any new info
arises. Little racist prick.
WILL
Racist? Aint no fucking way youre
from Southie. Where you from, hun?
KIM
Just answer my questions.
WILL
Fine. Ill fucking repeat myself.
Justin? Enemies? No. Fuck no. If he
had any enemies, I would have
thrown the fuck down, for real.
KIM
Well, you tell me. Why do you think
your friend got killed like that?
WILL
Wish I knew.
KIM
Did he tell you where he got his
drugs?
WILL
Never told me.
KIM
Where do you get your drugs.
Will smiles.
WILL
Nice try. We done?
KIM
Did he contact you in any way on
the day he died?
WILL
Jesus, were going around in
fucking circles. No. He didnt
fucking tell me shit.
KIM
It mustve been drug-related.

26.
WILL
How you figure?
KIM
Take drugs out of
theres no motive
according to what
motive, no crime.

the equation, and

whatsoever
you told me. No
Its a paradox.

WILL
A para-what?
Forget it.

KIM

WILL
(shrugs)
You know? When I first heard that
someone murdered Justin, I wanted
nothing more than to pop a cap into
the motherfucker who did it. Now, I
dont even wanna know who it is
anymore.
Why not?

KIM

WILL
It hurts too much. Hurts so bad you
forget how hope even felt.
Ignorance keeps me sane. You
wouldnt understand.
Will leaps off his bench and walks back toward the rink.
KIM
(silently)
More than youd think.
INT. SUPER MARKET - DAY
The isles are packed with SHOPPERS.
The manager of the store, MR. JAFARI (60s, Persian) struggles
forward, approaching a long row of checkout lines dotting the
front of the store.
Mr. Jafari scans the scene, his eyes fixing on Register 3 and
the young lady working it, DAISY OBRIEN (17, blonde).
MR. JAFARI
Daisy OBrien!

27.
Daisy is busy with a CUSTOMER, frantically filling a brown
bag with assorted household items.
Not now.

DAISY

Mr. Jafari steps behind the register, tapping her on the

shoulder. She turns around, startled.
DAISY (CONTD)
(relieved)
Oh, Mr. Jafari. Im sorry I thought
you were-MR. JAFARI
I cover for you.
Why?

DAISY

MR. JAFARI
Police officer is waiting in break
room. Wants a word. She said it
would be over quick. Just take care
of it and come back.
Daisy sighs. The now-annoyed customer drops an oversized box
of cereal in front of the price scanner.
CUSTOMER
What kind of fucking service is
this?
Mr. Jafari has a weary expression.
MR. JAFARI
Sorry, sir.
(to Daisy)
Hurry.
She runs off.
INT. SUPER MARKET (BREAK ROOM) - DAY
Kim and Daisy sit across from each other at a small circular
table.
Drops of water fall steadily from a busted pipe in the
ceiling.
Kim, note pad in hand, clears her throat. Daisy taps her
fingers on the table, eyes drifting.

28.
KIM
Some real first-class facilities
youre treated to here.
DAISY
Mr. Jafari likes to brag that the
break room hasnt changed since he
was a cashier. Takes pride in his
distinct lack of progress.
KIM
Interesting.
DAISY
This is about Justin, isnt it.
KIM
Perceptive, I like that.
DAISY
Does common sense pass for
perception nowadays?
KIM
Why is it always the smartasses?
DAISY
Why see me at work?
KIM
Element of surprise.
DAISY
Leaving me little time to conjure
up a lie, I suppose?
KIM
Thats right.
DAISY
So, what? Did they fire the other
two or something?
KIM
No, they just needed fresh eyes.
DAISY
Fresh questions too, I hope.
Kim laughs, scribbling something.
KIM
Am I that predictable?

29.
DAISY
Will texted me.
KIM
Did he now. Well Daisy, youre in
luck. Im not gonna ask you a whole
lot of questions.
DAISY
Oh thank God. So I can leave?
KIM
Not just yet. Youre gonna tell me
about him.
DAISY
Tell you what, exactly?
KIM
If he were to magically come back
to life and stroll into this room
right now, and sat where Im
sitting, what kind of person would
you see?
DAISY
You better watch your fucking
mouth.
Kim nods.
KIM
Youre right, Im sorry. See, I
could come down here, waste both
your time and mine with bullshit,
rehashing what the two of us
already know practically verbatim.
Or...I could try to actually know
this guy. Get illuminated, start
drawing conclusions. Because Ive
got a big-ass question mark right
now. Me and my fellow cops...at
times, Ill be honest, we get
insulted. We believe in a system.
And when we encounter a case that
defies common knowledge, a case
that doesnt become a shred clearer
after pouring our minds full tilt
toward absolution. We tell it to
fuck off. Thats right. We file it
away. This is what weve done to
your boyfriend, Miss OBrien. Help
me see him.

30.
KIM (CONT'D)
Help me see the Justin the killer
saw before he murdered him on those
train tracks.
A beat.
DAISY
Justin was an artist. Did you know
that?
Yes.

KIM

DAISY
Did you know what kind of pictures
he painted?
No.

KIM

DAISY
I knew Justin well enough to know
that he didnt see the world the
way I did. People like him notice
details. Everything was alive to
him, you know? He had this spark.
Could win your heart with a glance.
He could give you one look and know
exactly what you were thinking.
KIM
Did you know about his drug use?
The heroin? The oxy?
DAISY
Of course I did. I just never
confronted him about it.
KIM
Why do you figure a guy like him
would turn to drugs?
DAISY
He hated himself. I mean, he had a
good family and all, he just felt
like he didnt deserve one. One
time I asked him how he felt, and
he told me, I feel like a ghost,
walking around unseen in the
backdrops of these other happy
lives.
Daisy rubs out the tears forming in her eyes.

31.
KIM
Think he was self-destructive?
No, he
aware.
before
he had

DAISY
was aware. He was always
Like, I thought he was clean
the two detectives told me
heroin in his system.

KIM
I thought you said-DAISY
He quit cold turkey. Like three
months before he was found.
KIM
You sure he stayed clean?
DAISY
I always notice when hes fucked
up. Im sure.
KIM
In the case file...you never
refuted the possibility that Justin
was killed in a botched drug deal,
a set-up, something in that vein.
You ever question that?
DAISY
What other explanation could there
be?
KIM
So if what you say is true and he
indeed was clean the three months
before the murder, you think he
just changed his mind one night?
DAISY
He always did.
KIM
How did he usually get his drugs?
DAISY
That, Im gonna plead the fifth on.
KIM
You only plead the fifth if youre
suspected of committing a crime.
What youre doing is obstruction of
justice.

32.
Kim shoots an incredulous look at Daisy.
KIM (CONTD)
Dont you wanna know who killed
your boyfriend?
DAISY
The dealer isnt involved.
Who is it?

KIM

DAISY
Its irrelevant.
KIM
No, asking you what positions you
two fucked in would be irrelevant.
This is important.
DAISY
Whoever killed Justin...it was
someone we didnt know.
KIM
Well, that really fucking narrows
the suspects down, doesnt it?
Whats the population these days?
Should I tell that to the sketch
artist? Someone you didnt know?
DAISY
Best I can do.
KIM
Youre willing to impede this case
just to protect the name of a drug
dealer? And you wonder why this
shit hasnt been solved?
DAISY
You should be thanking me. Im
saving you some time.
KIM
You dont wanna tell me the
fuckers name, then fine. Give me a
hint at least.
DAISY
Youre barking up the wrong tree.

33.
KIM
Who is this guy? A fucking James
Bond villain? You cant even tell
me a hint?
DAISY
Look I barely talk to the guy
anymore. I havent seen him since
Justin got clean.
KIM
Youre killing me, you know that?
(takes out card)
Alright, heres my card. Case you
change your mind.
DAISY
(sarcastic)
Yeah Ill keep in touch.
Daisy takes the card and walks out of the room. Kim jots some
notes down, shaking her head.
KIM
(to herself)
Real fucking productive. Colonel
Mustard in the Conservatory
perhaps.
INT. KIMS CAR - DAY
It is afternoon. The sun is just beginning to set as Kim
drives through Eastborough.
The neighborhood is strangely deserted.
EXT. TRAIN TRACKS - DAY
Kim walks along the train tracks, going to the exact spot
Justin was found on.
She stands over the spot, looking down at it. She then looks
around at her surroundings.
A TRAIN HORN is heard at a great distance, however Kim
remains still.
EXT. DRIVING RANGE - NIGHT
Kim and Max have the two-tiered range to themselves. Kim sits
at a bench drinking beer.

34.
Max sets his beer down, picking a shiny white ball out of a
pile, and places it on a tee.
He CLUBS a shot about two hundred feet.
MAX
(whistles)
Ill tell you something, Kim. I
Shouldve went pro.
KIM
If hitting a ball at an open field
of nothing makes you a pro, sign me
up.
MAX
Dont believe Id make it?
KIM
(sarcastic)
Hey, anythings possible.
MAX
When my brother-in-law bought this
place, I guaranteed itd be a
failure. Now look at it.
Max sets another ball on the tee.
KIM
Doesnt this ever get boring?
MAX
Well shit, I never asked you to
come.
He SHANKS the drive.
MAX (CONTD)
Motherfucker. Shit.
KIM
You offer beer, Ill watch you play
fucking solitaire.
Kim TOSSES her beer bottle at the trashcan. It HITS the edge
and falls to the ground, BREAKING.
MAX
Ay! The fuck?
KIM
Sorry, Ill clean it up when we
leave.

35.
Max takes a swig of beet and sets another ball.
MAX
So hows the case proceeding?
KIM
As anticipated.
Dry leads?

MAX

KIM
Saharan levels.
MAX
Shit. Quaid give you a limit?
Two weeks.
Then what?

KIM
MAX

KIM
Then...I dunno. Que, sera, sera.
MAX
The fuck does that mean? You going
beaner on me, Winter?
KIM
Its from...ah forget it. We have a
meeting tomorrow. A set time and
everything.
MAX
Theyve really tightened the leash.
KIM
All I need is an electronic
bracelet.
Max CLUBS a rather long shot.
MAX
Im back, motherfucker.
KIM
How about your cases?
MAX
You know I hate talking about that
shit.

36.
KIM
I need some inspiration.
MAX
Inspiration? How about a pharmacist
iced in an alleyway waiting for a
nonexistent shipment of black
market dope? That inspiring enough
for you?
KIM
We got Street Narcotics watching
Eastborough?
MAX
Possibly. Might not house a unit,
but they could give info. Why?
KIM
Im calling a Hail Mary.
MAX
Sure about that?
Kim takes out another beer bottle and opens it.
KIM
Eastboroughs a small neighborhood.
Agree?
MAX
Relatively, yeah.
KIM
The working theorys that Justin
Parker was popped by a drug dealer.
Am I right?
MAX
Fuck, its your case, Winter.
Whatever you say.
Max picks another golf ball.
KIM
There shouldnt be many pushers in
the neighborhood. Its not like
they have corner boys or anything.
From the looks of it theres one
group controlling the trade in the
area.
MAX
Got a name?

37.
KIM
Shit, if I did Id be able to sleep
at night.
MAX
Sounds thin.
KIM
Thins all I have.
MAX
Thin never leads to arrests.
KIM
Yeah, yeah...hey let me take a
shot.
(stands up)
Back off, let me take a shot.
MAX
By all means.
Kim staggers toward Max and takes his club. He steps back.
She kicks Maxs ball off the tee and sets her beer bottle
down instead.
MAX (CONTD)
The fuck you doi-She SWINGS at the bottle, SHATTERING it.
MAX (CONTD)
Ay! What the fuck!?
Kim has a fresh cut on her face, laughing hysterically.
KIM
Come on, youre acting like I just
threw a fucking hand grenade.
MAX
Jesus Christ, Winter. Youre all
fucking cut-up and everything.
KIM
Relax. Ill clean it up, dont
worry.
Max grabs the cooler of beer and leaves with it. Kim
continues to drunkenly stare into the darkness.

38.
INT. KIMS APARTMENT (LIVING ROOM) - NIGHT
Kim watches television, a hockey game between the Bruins and
the Canucks.
She sloppily refills her glass with whiskey and then holds up
the glass.
Kim stares at the glass, looking at the distorted hockey game
through it. She contemplates.
All sound FADES OUT and is replaced by a quiet shell-shocked
HUM, which slowly increases in volume.
MONTAGE - VARIOUS
A) INT. KIMS APARTMENT (BEDROOM) - NIGHT - Kim and Greg are
in the middle of a passionate love-making session. They smile
at each other as Greg thrusts into her.
B) EXT. WATERFRONT - DAY - Kim and Greg sit on a bench,
admiring the beautiful waterfront. He turns to her and tells
her something. She turns her attention to the wedding ring he
is holding, becoming ecstatic.
C) EXT. PARK - DAY - Kim, Greg, and a group of RUNNERS jog
through a park. She sweats and pants heavily.
D) EXT. BOYLSTON STREET - DAY - Kim, covered in blood, runs
through a crowd of smoke. PEOPLE frantically run past her. In
the distance, she sees Greg lying in a pool of blood, his
severed leg a couple feet away from him.
E) INT. HOSPITAL ROOM - DAY - Greg is taken off of life
support by 2 DOCTORS. Kim watches this, in tears.
Then, an audible PHONE RING.
END OF MONTAGE
INT. KIMS APARTMENT (LIVING ROOM) - NIGHT
Kim drops the glass of whiskey, making it spill on her toes.
Shit.

KIM

She picks up her RINGING cellphone and answers it.

39.
KIM (CONTD)
(into phone)
Kim Winter, speaking?
QUINN (V.O.)
(over phone)
Uh. Hello. This is Quinn Parker.
KIM
(into phone)
Oh, Quinn. Right.
QUINN (V.O.)
(over phone)
Im sor...did I catch you at a bad
time?
KIM
(into phone)
Im a cop, Quinn, Im not allowed
to have bad times.
Quinns CHUCKLE is heard on the other line.
QUINN (V.O.)
(over phone)
I was...I was just wondering if we
could meet somewhere.
KIM
(into phone)
What? Now?
QUINN (V.O.)
(over phone)
Oh, no no. Im barely awake myself.
No. I meant like tomorrow or
something. Maybe discuss whether
youve made any progress.
KIM
(into phone)
Cant we just do that over the
phone? There aint all that much to
talk about.
QUINN (V.O.)
(over phone)
Id prefer meeting people in
person, if you dont mind. Helps me
read them better.

40.
KIM
(into phone)
So you wanna know if Im
bullshitting you, basically.
LAUGHTER on the other line.
QUINN (V.O.)
(over phone)
You can put it that way, yeah.
Nothing against you personally,
its just...
KIM
(into phone)
Your profession.
QUINN (V.O.)
(over phone)
Thats right.
KIM
(into phone)
Okay. All sounds good. Where do you
wanna meet?
INT. POLICE STATION (WOMENS RESTROOM) - DAY
Kim SPLASHES water at her face and rubs her eyes, looking at
herself in the mirror. She slightly SLAPS herself in the face
a couple time.
KIM
Come on, Kim. Wake the fuck up.
She takes out a box of mints and shoves a handful into her
mouth.
INT. CAPTAIN QUAIDS OFFICE - DAY
Kim and Quaid reassume their prior positions. His desk his
more cluttered than before.
Quaid removes a plastic bottle of Sprite from his desk,
taking a swig. He tips the bottle toward Kim.
KIM
Want a gold star, Captain?
For what?

QUAID

41.
KIM
At least give it a few months
before shoving your sobriety in my
face. Fuck, a week even.
QUAID
Been two, actually.
A beat.
QUAID (CONTD)
Pursuing new angles, I see.
KIM
You read my homework?
QUAID
Only the parts that were coherent.
Thoughts?
KIM
My opinion? Seung and Ramirez are
good detectives, agree?
QUAID
Hard to argue against it.
KIM
Theres good reason this went
nowhere the first time around.
QUAID
Which is...
KIM
Its the Hells Kitchen of Southie.
QUAID
That bad, huh?
KIM
Couldnt be worse. They both know
something, but they wont come
forward with it. The friend and the
girlfriend, I mean.
QUAID
You think theyre being paid off?
KIM
More like threatened.

42.
QUAID
What were the answers they gave you
like?
KIM
Different variations of go fuck
yourself.
QUAID
So, what? You want us to pull the
plug? Again?
KIM
Au contraire, mon frere.
Quaid looks confused.
QUAID
The fuck are you saying?
KIM
I have a plan.
Do tell.

QUAID

KIM
I want a peek at a few of
Eastboroughs most unsavory
citizens.
QUAID
You mean all of them?
KIM
Right. With the help of Street
Narcotics.
QUAID
Seung pursued the drug angle.
KIM
Not to this extent.
QUAID
So, what youre suggesting is a
shot in the dark?
KIM
Something to the effect.
giving it a fucking run,
Making an effort, right?
before the two weeks are

Hey, Im
here.
Humor me
up.

43.
A beat.
QUAID
Skip the files. I can deliver you
directly to a small-time snitch
courtesy of Blonski. Got popped for
selling H and could hardly contain
himself. Hes from the area. Knows
people.
Kim pulls out her note pad and jots notes down as Quaid says
them.
Name?

KIM

QUAID
DeShawn Harold. Goes by Captain
Cheddar.
She stops writing and looks up.
KIM
Hold on, did you say Captain
Cheddar?
Yeah.

QUAID

KIM
Youre telling me these idiots are
getting tipped off by a guy named
Captain Cheddar? How do they know
hes not dicking them around?
QUAID
His infos been solid so far, but
you never know. His scheduled meet
with Blonski is exactly noon
tomorrow over at JJs Burgers. Know
where that is?
GPS.

KIM

QUAID
You get there at one, not a minute
later, not a minute earlier.
Blonskill tell the cocksucker to
wait.
KIM
Sounds good. He a kid?

44.
QUAID
Early twenties.
KIM
Captain fucking Cheddar. Where do
they come up with this shit?
Kim jots down some notes.
QUAID
Plans for now, Winter?
Plans?

KIM

QUAID
When you leave my office.
KIM
(sarcastic)
Well Captain, I was planning on
taking a shit. Want me to file the
toilet paper in evidence?
QUAID
(chuckles)
Seriously though, what are you
doing?
KIM
Personal matters.
INT. THAI RESTAURANT - NIGHT
Kim and Quinn share a table at a quaint, dim-lit, nearly
empty eatery.
KIM
Well this is new.
QUINN
Ever had Thai food before?
KIM
Chinese takeout is about as exotic
as my experience gets.
They share a chuckle.
KIM (CONTD)
Hows the food here?

45.
QUINN
Its...different.
The two start laughing, just as the WAITRESS arrives with two
glasses of water.
She sets the glasses down on the table.
WAITRESS
Are you ready to order?
QUINN
Um...
(to Kim)
You ready?
KIM
Sure.
(looks at menu)
Ill find something in here I like.
WAITRESS
I can give you time if-KIM
No, its fine. Here, Ill get
the...uh Mok Huak.
QUINN
You even know what that is?
KIM
(smiles)
I dunno, it sounds exotic.
(to waitress)
Is it exotic?
I guess.

WAITRESS

Quinn has trouble containing his laughter.

WAITRESS (CONTD)
And for you, sir?
QUINN
I guess Ill also have the...
(to Kim)
What was it?
KIM
It was...fuck I dont remember.

46.
The two burst out laughing. The waitress looks at them,
annoyed and confused.
WAITRESS
Two Mok Huaks it is.
She leaves. Kim and Quinn settle down.
QUINN
Oh God.
(takes sip)
Your Mok Huak better be good.
KIM
Im sure it is.
QUINN
So, uh...sorry to segue like this
but, any breaks?
KIM
I would have called.
Really?

QUINN

KIM
I keep my word.
QUINN
Good to know. At least this thing
is starting to get a little
traction again, you know?
Yeah.

KIM

QUINN
You interview Will yet?
KIM
Yeah. Very...interesting kid.
QUINN
I know he wasnt exactly the right
role model for Justin, but, he was
still a good friend, all things
considered. Say what you want about
the kid, but he would have walked
through hell for my son.
KIM
You ever talk to him?

47.
QUINN
Time to time. Justin
embarrassed whenever
anything more than a
kid, so I didnt get
all that much.

would get
I said
hello to the
to know him

KIM
Ever hear rumors about Will? Who he
may have been associating with?
QUINN
I could smell the pot from
downstairs whenever he was over,
but he didnt strike me as the type
of kid whod fall with the wrong
crowd. Hes...smart...in his own
way of course.
KIM
But Justin did. Fall with the wrong
crowd, I mean.
Quinn becomes serious.
QUINN
How do you know that?
KIM
Because of...what happened to him.
He squeezes the table cloth.
Of course.

QUINN

KIM
Quinn...
(a beat)
There arent any new leads at the
moment. This is all just
speculation. It couldve just been-QUINN
A mugging. Deja fucking vu.
KIM
Anythings possible. But you see,
nobodys talking. Im stuck.
Quinn squeezes his eyes shut.
Quinn?

KIM (CONTD)

48.
QUINN
Im diseased.
Excuse me?

KIM

QUINN
Im diseased. You know? People
treat me like Im sick. At parties,
all eyes on me. At work, empty
complements galore. Everywhere I go
its like Im in one of those
fucking Lifetime Channel Christmas
specials.
KIM
Its not their fault. They just
dont know how to help.
QUINN
Of course its not their fault. Im
not blaming them.
KIM
Maybe you should try grief
counseling.
Did you?

QUINN

A beat.
No.

KIM

QUINN
See? Look at me. Im taking
advantage of you.
KIM
No youre-QUINN
Yes, yes I am. I insisted on
dragging you here even though we
could have just done this over the
phone. Im a leech.
KIM
Quinn. Listen. I like this place.
Youre not leeching off me. And
trust me I know a leech when I see
one.

49.
QUINN
At the end of the day, when you
talk to your cop friends, do you
discuss your cases?
Sometimes.

KIM

QUINN
What do you say about this one?
Kim tenses in her seat, uncomfortable.
QUINN (CONTD)
You think what happened to my
junkie son was his fault, right?
You wonder why I havent moved on
like you did.
KIM
You dont know a thing about me,
Quinn.
QUINN
At least you have a life.
KIM
You know what? How about we get a
drink?
INT. FOUR LEAF BAR - NIGHT
The bar is much more quiet and empty than previously seen.
Kim and Quinn sit next to each other in stools, afforded
privacy by the setting.
The BARTENDER stands on the opposite end of the panel,
minding his own business near the taps.
Quinn drinks a scotch on the rocks and Kim drinks whiskey.
KIM
Feel better?
QUINN
Kind of a loose way to put it. But
itll do. You come here often?
KIM
This is a place from a better time
in my life.

50.
QUINN
And when was that?
KIM
My fourth date with Greg. My
husband.
She sips her drink.
KIM (CONTD)
We spent most of our time right
here. These same seats, even. Kids.
Young and dumb.
QUINN
You meet him here?
KIM
No, we met on a dating site. Can
you fucking believe it?
QUINN
Im sorry, Ive been so caught up
with moping about myself that I
forgot to offer my condolences.
KIM
I never got the concept of
condolences.
QUINN
Neither did I. Just a formality.
An uncomfortable silence.
KIM
Im just...not used to someone
listening.
QUINN
Kim...your husband...
KIM
Wanna know what happened?
QUINN
Im sorry. You dont have to-KIM
Arent I obligated?
QUINN
Shouldnt feel that way.

51.
KIM
Im stepping over the line, arent
I. Fuck, why did we come here?
She puts her head down, resting it in her arms. Quinn looks
at her, not quite knowing what to say.
After a while, she comes back up.
KIM (CONTD)
Sorry about that.
QUINN
No, its oka-KIM
Im just as fucked up as you are,
Quinn.
QUINN
Maybe you should...talk about it.
Kim downs her drink.
KIM
He was taken from me.
How?

QUINN

KIM
The marathon last year. He was in
it.
Jesus.

QUINN

KIM
Beautiful day, not sure if you
recall. Not a cloud in the sky.
QUINN
It was two kids, wasnt it?
Yeah.

KIM

QUINN
Fucking unbelievable.
KIM
Not so much in the grand scheme of
things.

52.
QUINN
What do you mean?
KIM
What do I mean? I mean that if the
love of my life wasnt in that
race, I wouldnt have given a shit.
Not one. It sounds cold, but if
youd seen the shit Ive seen in
the line of work, youd be the
same. To me, they wouldve just
been numbers on the stats. Just
another fucking day in Boston.
(takes drink)
You think you wouldve even given
it so much as a thought if some
other guys kid was found on those
tracks?
QUINN
I suppose not.
You
all
the
the

KIM
see, us humans, we think were
sympathetic and shit. But in
end, its our ego we care about
most.

A beat. Quinn studies her as she looks at her drink, rubbing

the brim of the glass.
QUINN
You know who you remind me of?
Who?

KIM

QUINN
My wife. You two have the same doom
and gloom attitude about
everything.
KIM
And you dont?
QUINN
What? You think I was always like
this?
KIM
You seem like a good man. I just
wish wed met before...

53.
QUINN
Life decided to fuck us?
KIM
(grins)
Exactly.
(a beat)
What happened to your wife? Its
alright if you dont wanna-QUINN
Why do you ask?
KIM
Same reason I decided to be a cop.
Morbid curiosity.
QUINN
After they found Justin...we just
werent the same. She liked to lie
to herself that we were. I tried to
get her to talk about it, but she
just wouldnt. She wouldnt let me
in, or anybody for that matter.
Shed leave home for hours, going
God knows where. And I didnt
confront her about it. I had no
fucking idea what to do. What to
say. How do you convince a mother
to accept the fact that her babys
gone forever? We tried everything.
Church. Counseling. Booze. Some
nights wed just go out and get
fucked up to the point of absolute
numbness, then come home in the
morning and say nothing to each
other until bedtime. And that
continued until...one night.
(a beat)
I was in bed. She comes in. And
shes wearing makeup for some
reason. First time since the
funeral. Then she comes up and
climbs on top of me. Opens her
robe. And thats when I notice
shes holding my gun. I ask her,
you know, What are you doing? She
tells me shes tired. She says she
wants us to leave together. And
then she points the gun right at my
head. Im looking up at her,
completely silent. I wanted to just
tell her shes fucking insane, but
I couldnt.

54.
QUINN (CONT'D)
As I laid there, watching the eyes
of a woman whod lost all hope, I
tried to think of a reason I
shouldnt just tell her to blow my
brains out right there. There was
nothing. Not a legacy to leave
behind, not a son to bury me. But I
didnt. We both knew that neither
of us had a single thing in this
life to live for, only I was still
afraid of death. So I told her to
get off me.
(tears up)
And then...and then she shot
herself. And I just stayed there. I
couldnt move. Couldnt scream or
nothing. And despite all that...Im
still here. Im still fucking here.
Kim is on the verge of tears herself, however she contains
herself. She genuinely doesnt know what to say.
QUINN (CONTD)
You think we should go, dont you.
Good idea.

KIM

EXT. FOUR LEAF BAR - NIGHT

Kim and Quinn stand next to each other on the sidewalk,
trying to wave a cab.
QUINN
Where did all the cabs go?
KIM
It being one in the morning
probably has something to do with
it.
QUINN
Shit, is that the time?
KIM
What? You got somewhere to be?
QUINN
Meeting. Anyway, I gotta pay you
back for the drinks.
KIM
No, you dont--

55.
QUINN
Sure I do. Hell, I bought a coffee
maker and everything. Just for you.
KIM
(smiles)
You did not.
QUINN
Im serious. Youre not gonna let
my money go to waste, are you?
KIM
Suppose one coffee wouldnt hurt,
then. At one in the morning.
A cab pulls up right next to them.
INT. QUINNS HOUSE (KITCHEN) - NIGHT
Quinn stands next to the kitchen counter, looking at a brand
new coffee maker. He is beyond confused.
QUINN
(to himself)
Alright, how do you do this?
He fiddles around with it, trying to see which parts are
removable.
KIM (O.S.)
You alright in there?
Yeah.

QUINN

Quinn presses a random button, which makes a LOUD NOISE. He

turns it off immediately.
Kim comes into the room.
KIM
I know it doesnt nearly take this
long to make coffee.
QUINN
I told you, Im fine.
KIM
Look at this, you dont even have
the grounds in yet.

56.
QUINN
The fuck are grounds?
KIM
(laughs)
The brown shit.
QUINN
Oh. I dont know. I never-KIM
Here, Ill do it.
She walks over and feels the carafe.
KIM (CONTD)
Why is this water hot?
QUINN
Isnt coffee supposed to be hot?
KIM
The water in here is supposed to be
cold.
Kim takes out the carafe and pours the water into the sink
drain. She then pours cold tap water into the carafe.
As Quinn leans against the counter, watching her, she
attaches the carafe onto the machine, takes some filter
paper, and puts that inside a compartment on top. She puts
some coffee grounds into the paper.
Quinn, at first hesitant to do so, begins stroking her hair.
Kim looks at him and he stops.
A beat.
Sorry.

QUINN

KIM
Its a dangerous road, Quinn.
QUINN
I know, I know. Im sorry.
She straightens out the filter paper as Quinn continues to
look at her. He looks as though he wants to say something but
cannot find the right words.
KIM
(not looking at him)
Just go wait in the living room.

57.
KIM (CONT'D)
Thisll be done in a jiffy. I just
said jiffy didnt I.
A beat.
QUINN
Have you ever...been with anyone?
Since-She turns to him.
KIM
No. Nothing long-term.
They gaze into each others eyes for a beat.
KIM (CONTD)
I cant, Quinn.
QUINN
Nobody...has to know.
KIM
I cant do this.
QUINN
I just wanna...feel something
again.
KIM
Youre feelings are gonna get me
fired.
QUINN
Something...tell me something.
She takes his hands.
KIM
After the case.
QUINN
What if it never ends?
KIM
Im gonna find out.
QUINN
Promise me.
I promise.

KIM

58.
Kim gives him a slow and hesitant kiss on the cheek and then
lets go of him.
Dont go.
Im a cop.

QUINN
KIM

QUINN
You cant drive.
KIM
Youre really drunk, arent you. We
took a cab here together. I can
call one.
QUINN
Right...right.
KIM
See you around.
A beat.
QUINN
You too, Detective.
Kim leaves the kitchen.
INT. FOUR LEAF BAR - NIGHT
Kim walks into the bar.
BARTENDER
Jesus, Kimmy, give it a break.
KIM
Relax, Im here for my keys.
BARTENDER
You sure youre alright to drive?
KIM
Police business tomorrow. Come on,
hand them over.
Alright.

BARTENDER

He reaches down and takes out her car keys, TOSSING them at
her. She catches them.

59.
KIM
Thanks. Can I get one for the road?
Over my--

BARTENDER

KIM
Im fucking with you. Bye bye.
She leaves.
INT. JJS BURGERS - DAY
The sleazy 50s-style burger joint is overflowing. Afternoon
sunlight gleams in through the windows.
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR (20s, black, skinny) sits at a booth in the
far end, eating the crumbs of a finished plate of french
fries. He wears a ripped and stained sweater.
Kim enters the restaurant and scans around. She notices
Captain Cheddar and goes over to his booth, sitting across
from him.
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR
One PM my ass.
KIM
Sorry. Ran late.
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR
Shit. I can smell the booze from
here.
KIM
What was your name again? Swiss
Cheese?
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR
Captain Cheddar. Also go by
Captain...or Cheddar.
KIM
Hopefully I wont have to be using
your name for long.
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR
I deserve another burger for
waiting on your drunk ass.
KIM
Well see how you do.

60.
Kim takes out a Polaroid picture and puts it on the table
facing down. She slides it over to him.
KIM (CONTD)
See if you recognize him.
Captain Cheddar takes the picture and turns it over, looking
at it.
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR
Shit, thats Ace.
KIM
Street name?
No shit.

CAPTAIN CHEDDAR

KIM
You know him?
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR
Wed talk whenever he come by. Used
to draw for me sometimes. Like
here...
He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a crumpled piece of
paper. He uncrumples it to show a near-perfect pencil drawing
of himself.
KIM
Its beautiful. I mean, all things
considered.
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR
Ha fucking ha.
Right when he crumples the paper again and puts it back into
his pocket, his nose begins to bleed. He covers it with table
napkins, tilting his head upward.
Fuck.

CAPTAIN CHEDDAR (CONTD)

KIM
You alright?
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR
Aint no thing.
After a few seconds, Captain Cheddar SNORTS loudly and drops
the bloody napkins on the table.

61.
KIM
Ew. What the fuck?
He scrambles to shove the napkins in his pockets.
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR
Im sorry, Im sorry. Shit, I
thought yall was used to seeing
blood.
KIM
Doesnt mean I like seeing it.
She is visibly disgusted.
KIM (CONTD)
You know what? Just tell me
something and Ill be on my way.
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR
What you wanna hear?
KIM
I dunno, the skys blue. Cigarettes
kill. All fucking dogs go to
heaven. Anything so I can file this
report, get the fuck outta here,
and never see you again. No
offense.
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR
None taken.
Kim opens her note pad.
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR (CONTD)
Shame what happened to him.
To who?

KIM

CAPTAIN CHEDDAR
Ace. Good kid. Feisty motherfucker
he was sometimes, but good heart.
KIM
What? He get into confrontations?
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR
Neighborhood like this? For sho.
KIM
What pissed him off?

62.
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR
Way I saw it, everyone and
everything. Probably why he liked
to come down here in the first
place.
KIM
Did he ever tell you why he was so
angry?
CAPTAIN
Vague shit, yeah.
up on H before he
chill with me, so

CHEDDAR
Hed get fucked
came around to
you know.

KIM
Alright, Captain Cheddar. You ready
for Final Jeopardy?
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR
Lay it on me.
KIM
Who supplied him with the drugs?
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR
Aint none of the corner boys, Ill
tell you that. Ace was doing some
premium shit. Way I figure, its a
courier. With muscle. Caters only
to rich motherfuckers like Ace.
KIM
Please tell me you have a name.
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR
Names Fergus McCauley.
KIM
Where does he hang? Do you know?
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR
Imma tell you now. Fergus may look
like a little bitch, but you dont
wanna fuck with him. He dont care
youre a cop.
KIM
Just tell me.
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR
Him and his boys, they hang out in
his dads bar.

63.
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR (CONT'D)
Its called McCauleys. He dont
come out until it get dark.
KIM
Ever seen daddys boy in person?
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR
Fuck if I know. They aint gonna
let my raggedy ass in there. This
is just shit I heard.
KIM
Alright. Well thank you. Enjoy the
burger.
She leaves behind a dollar and leaves. Captain Cheddar picks
up the dollar.
CAPTAIN CHEDDAR
Ay, the fuck am I gonna get with a
dollar? This some bullshit.
INT. MCCAULEYS BAR (POOL ROOM) - NIGHT
The complete opposite of a dive bar. Under the dimmed lights
is a mostly wooden establishment that simply oozes with
elegance.
Theres a dark green pool table in the center. Circling the
table, cue in hand, is the sharply-dressed FERGUS MCCAULEY
(21, muscular, quintessential douchebag). A large gold cross
hangs on his neck.
Sitting around him are his loyal pocket of TEENAGE FOLLOWERS,
who are also dressed impeccably. A few of them smoke
marijuana from pipes. Among this posse of troublemakers is
Jesse.
Just as Fergus lines up the seven ball with the left pocket,
a tiny hand taps on his shoulder. He glances up, annoyed.
FERGUS
Fuck did I tell you about
interrupting me?
The scantily clad BAR WAITRESS (20s) who tapped him steps
back.
BAR WAITRESS
Sorry, Mr. McCauley. Theres a cop
outside, asking for you.

64.
FERGUS
He say why?
BAR WAITRESS
It was a she.
Jesse stands up.
JESSE
Yo, Fergie. It could be the bitch
who questioned Will a couple days
ago.
FERGUS
You said he told her nothing,
right?
JESSE
Thats what he told me. But shit,
he didnt tell me what she asked
about.
FERGUS
I swear if he fucking spilled-BARTENDER
I could just tell her to leave.
FERGUS
No. Fuck no. Ill be right with
her.
(to posse)
And put the fucking weed away. All
of it.
INT. MCCAULEYS BAR - NIGHT
Kim sits alone, drinking a beer. Her cellphone RINGS and she
takes it out.
Right when Fergus comes out of the pool room, she ignores the
call and puts the phone back, calmly wheeling her seat
around.
Fergus sits right next to her.
FERGUS
(to bartender)
Get me whatever shes having,
alright?
KIM
Is that pot I smell?

65.
FERGUS
Something tells me youre not here
for a drug bust.
KIM
(sarcastic)
Wow, I thought I was supposed the
detective.
A beer glass is set in front of Fergus. He takes a sip.
FERGUS
Now, seeing as you already seem to
know my name and that frankly I
dont give a fuck what yours is, I
believe we can skip the
introductions. How does that sound?
KIM
Sounds good.
FERGUS
So how can I help you, hun?
KIM
Well you can help me by skipping
the bullshit confessing right here,
but something tells me you wanna go
another route.
FERGUS
(snarky)
Detective, Im afraid you have me
puzzled.
KIM
When your waitress went in to call
you, I caught a glimpse of your
little gang. Ones I saw didnt look
the drinking age.
FERGUS
They pay double, what can I tell
you?
(extends his arms)
Here, take me in. Close down my
family bar. Not a bad nights work.
KIM
Maybe Ill give you a pardon.
FERGUS
If Im good?

66.
KIM
Why dont you answer my questions
to the best of your bullshitting
abilities and well find out.
Fergus chuckles and takes a drink.
Shoot.

FERGUS

KIM
What do you know about Justin
Parker?
He shows no emotions whatsoever at this questions, remaining
his calm.
FERGUS
Junkie rich kid who pissed off the
wrong bunch of niggers and got
turned into swiss cheese because of
it. Nothing more to say.
KIM
Wanna know what I know about him?
FERGUS
(sarcastic)
Please tell.
KIM
You sold him drugs. Heroin, oxy.
And you didnt have to be much of a
salesman, did you, Fergie.
FERGUS
Ever heard of defamation?
KIM
(sarcastic)
Theres a big word.
FERGUS
Some fuckers probably been
slandering me. A neighborhood
thats ninety-nine percent niggers
and spics and you come to me. The
one motherfucker who actually owns
a legitimate business around here.
KIM
I thought your dad owned this bar.

67.
FERGUS
No. He founded it. Passed it down
to me after he got sick.
KIM
So youre telling me you bought
that suit with bar taps?
FERGUS
Look, unless you plan on leaving
the badge here and letting me cum
on that pretty face of yours in the
mens room, this conversation is
over.
KIM
I could give two shits about your
so-called legitimate business. All
I want is what you know about
Justin Parker and Ill leave you
and Pleasure Island here alone.
FERGUS
I told you, I dont know anything.
Just word of mouth. Never met the
guy. Whoevers telling you that I
did is feeding you horseshit.
KIM
You sure about that?
FERGUS
Yes. Now get the fuck out of my
bar.
Kim stands up, and without taking her eyes off of him, pulls
out some cash and sets it on the panel. She then turns around
and leaves the bar, with Fergus checking her ass out the
whole time.
INT. DAISYS APARTMENT - DAY
Daisy sits on a radiator and takes hits from a bong, blowing
the smoke outside her window.
Her modest pad is a real mess, a space completely neglected
by its owner. Clothes and other assorted junk littered about,
complete with a sink filled with dirty dishes.
She hears a KNOCK at the door.
Daisy sets down her bong and goes over to the door, opening
it.

68.
Fergus strides in, kissing her on the cheek. He closes the
door, softly.
FERGUS
Hello, lovely. How are we doing
today?
Good.

DAISY

FERGUS
Happy to hear it.
DAISY
What do you want?
FERGUS
My God this place is a fucking zoo.
He goes toward the window, closing it and drawing the blinds.
DAISY
You looking for a quick bump? All I
got is herb.
FERGUS
Quit the candy?
Trying.

DAISY

FERGUS
Fighting fire with fire, huh,
Daisy?
DAISY
As much as I enjoy your company,
why are you here?
FERGUS
I had something...funny happen to
me last night.
DAISY
What do you mean?
FERGUS
Came face to face with a detective.
A female detective.
She has a worrisome expression.

69.
DAISY
So what? Hell, the shit you people
pull over there, its about ti-Fergus SLAPS her across the face and GRABS her by the throat,
pushing her up against the wall. He holds her there.
FERGUS
What the fuck have you been saying
about me? Huh?
She can hardly speak. He PUNCHES the wall next to her head.
FERGUS (CONTD)
Tell me what you told her, you
fucking cunt! Telling people I
killed that fucking junkie
boyfriend of yours!?
DAISY
Noth...nothing.
He SLAPS her and she falls to the floor. Before she could
stand up, he SLAPS her again and straddles her, holding her
down by the throat.
FERGUS
The fuck did I do to you to deserve
this?
She tries CLAWING at him.
DAISY
I fucking hate you! Fuck you!
FERGUS
Stop it. Stop it!
Daisy stops clawing and he lets go, catching his breath.
FERGUS (CONTD)
Whyve you been spreading bullshit?
Huh?
DAISY
I havent. I sw-FERGUS
Im not in the mood for bullshit,
Daisy. What? You want me to believe
they pulled my name out a fucking
hat? These motherfuckers press for
a reason.

70.
DAISY
I didnt say anything. I told her
the same shit I told the other guy.
FERGUS
Then why the fuck was she in my
bar?
DAISY
I dont fucking know! Maybe someone
else told her.
FERGUS
What? Like that faggot, Will?
A beat.
DAISY
Dont hurt him. He told me he kept
you out of it, I swear.
FERGUS
I dont give a fuck which one of
you it is thats spreading this
shit about me. All I wanna leave
here with is the assurance that no
more fucking cops show up at my
family business, because I swear to
fucking God, if a Five-O so much as
drives past my bar, Ill cut off
Wills dick and make you suck on it
as I fuck you from behind. And then
Ill kill you both. Got it?
Daisy tears up.
FERGUS (CONTD)
Tell me you fucking got it.
DAISY
Yes, yes. I promise, I wont talk.
FERGUS
And if she comes snooping again,
you tell her to fuck off.
Understood?
She nods.
FERGUS (CONTD)
Good. Sorry I had to do this.
(stands up)
Ill take you to dinner sometime.
Make it up to you.

71.
Fergus leaves the apartment. Daisy just lies there, staring
at the ceiling.
INT. POLICE STATION (SHOOTING RANGE) - DAY
Kim FIRES off a few rounds in the indoor shooting range,
aiming at a target fastened about 100 feet away.
Her hand is steady, the bullets FLYING in a controlled burst
of three.
Click click, out of ammo.
Quaid enters the range and points toward the demolished
target.
QUAID
Sorry bastard never had a chance.
KIM
He made a move, sir...I swear.
He laughs. Kim takes off her earplugs.
QUAID
Look, sorry it took me so long to
get back to you.
KIM
Well youre here now.
QUAID
You said you had a request?
KIM
Surveillance.
What for?

QUAID

KIM
I want a watch on a Fergus
McCauley. Young scum, drug dealer.
Lied to me the other day.
QUAID
You want the kid spooked because he
lied to you?
KIM
I want him spooked because hes a
drug dealer.

72.
QUAID
A drug dealer who lied to you.
Yes.

KIM

QUAID
And what the fuck, may I so humbly
ask, does this have to do with your
case? Your murder case.
KIM
Fergus supplied our body with
drugs.
QUAID
So hes a suspect?
Possibly.

KIM

A beat.
KIM (CONTD)
Want it solved, or not?
QUAID
You blowing smoke up my ass,
Winter? Buying yourself time,
perhaps?
KIM
Right now, the only person wasting
time is you, Captain. No offense.
QUAID
None taken.
KIM
So whats it gonna be?
Another beat.
QUAID
One car. Two days, the most.
KIM
Am I alone in this?
QUAID
Id put you with someone, but,
fuck, everyones busy with that
pharmacist case.

73.
KIM
Alright then.
QUAID
Now, I know subtlety isnt exactly
your strong suit, so be-KIM
I can handle it.
She reloads her clip.
INT. EMPTY PARKING GARAGE - NIGHT
A nice and brand new sedan sits in an abandoned parking
garage.
Behind the drivers seat is Fergus, waiting.
A golden silhouette splashes across his face, headlights
belonging to another, much older car pulling in.
The old beat-up car parks close, three spots away. Will steps
out, carrying a can of beer.
He opens the door to the passenger side of Fergus car.
INT. FERGUS CAR - NIGHT
Will gets in.
WILL
Sick fucking ride, bro. This new?
FERGUS
Just bought it last week.
POP! Will opens his beer bottle and takes a sip.
FERGUS (CONTD)
This your third beer or something?
Fourth.

WILL

CLICK! All of the doors get locked. Will becomes tense.

FERGUS
You see Jesse today?
WILL
Nah, family dinner.

74.
FERGUS
A cop visited my bar. Bitch cop.
WILL
Whatd she want?
Fergus pulls out a pistol and presses it against Wills
temple.
FERGUS
Been wondering the same thing.
WILL
Fuck! What the fuck!?
FERGUS
What did you tell her?
WILL
I fed her shit! I didnt tell her
your fucking name!
FERGUS
One of you motherfuckers is lying
to me.
WILL
One of who?
FERGUS
Either you or that cunt, Daisy.
WILL
What did you fucking do to h-FERGUS
Did you even remotely mention me?
Think long and fucking hard.
WILL
Nothing that would in any way lead
back to you, man. I fucking swear.
Now get that fucking gun out of my
fa-FERGUS
After all this time, why now? Hell,
why me?
WILL
Maybe some fucking rat got the
wrong info, I dunno.

75.

Who?

FERGUS

WILL
Fuck should I know?
Fergus puts the gun back under his seat and unlocks the car
doors.
FERGUS
Alright get the fuck out.
Will opens the door.
Wait.

FERGUS (CONTD)

He looks back at Fergus.

FERGUS (CONTD)
No more talking. I have far too
much to worry about right now, and
this fucking junkie shouldnt be
one of them.
Will nods.
FERGUS (CONTD)
And lose the fucking beer for
Christs sakes.
He gets out of the car and tosses the beer can on the floor
as he walks to his own car.
EXT. QUINNS HOUSE (LIVING ROOM) - NIGHT
Kim sits on the couch as Quinn stands in front of her, arms
crossed.
QUINN
Why arent you answering my calls?
KIM
What are you, my mother?
QUINN
You cant even text? Nothing?
KIM
You see? This is why it cant be
personal.

76.
QUINN
It was personal the moment you
promised me.
KIM
People like me, we dont make
promises.
QUINN
Whats that supposed to mean? You
people are dropping the case again?
A beat.
KIM
Its never personal. Its my job. I
used to take a case and force
myself to muster up some empathy.
Yeah, the sympathy was there, but
it wasnt enough. Something like
sympathy can get lost in the
procedure. Nullifies the will.
QUINN
What are you talking about?
KIM
Sit down. Please.
Quinn sits in the armchair across from the couch.
What will?

QUINN

KIM
The will to set the wrong right.
Id look at pictures of the
departed. They always wore these
doomed smiles. Mans far too flawed
for judgment. See, we live with
this. Everything, and I mean
everything in this world is fucked
up, upside down, were walking in a
hall of mirrors. And we accept it
in order to scrounge a life out of
all this...madness. Even the
empathy doesnt last. It becomes a
game. Solve this, handle that, kiss
some ass, shine your badge, and the
beat goes on. A crime scene becomes
routine. Adaptation. This was my
perch, before Greg was killed.
Before they took him from me.

77.
KIM (CONT'D)
After that, well, everything was
personal. I became a crusader. I
wanted to stop them. Abolish selfmade kings who saw other human
beings as nothing more than their
subjects. The righteousness made me
blind. Suddenly, the rules didnt
seem as important. Nobody noticed.
Not until some prick named Charlie
Hall killed his wife and baby son
with a hammer. No apparent reason
or motive. He just...he just killed
them. He tried spinning it as a
break-in, of course. An
unidentified black male. It was
him. And we knew. We all fucking
knew it was him. He was a rich guy,
bought a dream team of lawyers. The
evidence against him was so strong,
so fucking strong, he shouldnt
have had a chance. But I wasnt
taking any. So I manipulated some
evidence. Just to be sure. Because,
he needed to go, Quinn...he needed
to go. He needed to face justice in
this life, because...I wasnt even
sure a God in heaven existed
anymore. So, I was eventually
caught. Blamed it on sloppiness. It
was a passable excuse. My captain
knew it was a lie, he knew Id
never make that kind of mistake,
but he protected me. And I did the
same. When IA came down hard, I
wouldnt say a word. I got hit with
a suspension. Lengthy one. During
this time, I did nothing but drink.
A functioning...but full blown
alcoholic. They gave me this case
to keep me out of everyones way,
because now...now all I make are
mistakes. Probably planning to fire
me, unless I miraculously discover
who murdered your son.
QUINN
The promise you made me. Was that a
lie, Kim?
KIM
No, a mistake. I cant work like
this. I cant carry your cross...I
cant see you again. Not until its
over at least.

78.
QUINN
You actually think I wanna see you
again?
A beat.
KIM
If thats the way you want it.
She gets up and walks to the front door.
INT. POLICE STATION (DETECTIVES FLOOR) - DAY
Kim, enclosed in a cubicle, goes through a folder. Activity
springs all around, other detectives hard at work, multiple
conversations blending into an indecipherable HUM.
Max steps into her work space, spreading photos on her desk.
MAX
The guardian angel arrives.
Intel?

KIM

MAX
Came in from a couple unis. Whod
they piss off to have do your dirty
work?
She skims through the photos.
KIM
Ah, the life of a drug dealer.
Well, this just about breaks the
case.
Kim freezes, staring at a black and white photograph
displaying Will entering Fergus car.
KIM (CONTD)
Well what do we have here?
MAX
Something useful?
KIM
Only confirms what I already knew.
(points to Will)
This one held back info.
MAX
Maybe hes just buying drugs.

79.
KIM
If this were a drug deal, they
wouldve done the transaction
through the window. No, this right
heres personal.
(a beat)
Make the call.
MAX
Whats the lucky guys name?
KIM
Will McFry.
INT. INTERVIEW ROOM - DAY
Will and Kim sit across from each other, a bare metal table
between them.
Max sits passively behind Will, yawning.
Will looks at the surveillance photo of himself meeting
Fergus.
WILL
So the fuck what? Wow, Im getting
into a fucking car. Big fucking
crime. This why you fuckers
interrupt me at point game?
KIM
Try honesty. Hell of a drug. Who
owns the ride?
WILL
I dont know.
KIM
You dont know?
WILL
Yeah, I drank a ton last night. I
dont remember. Couldve been Santa
Claus.
MAX
A brand new car? Fuck, that piece
of shit Kringle must be racking
serious dough these days.
Maybe so.

WILL

80.
KIM
Wanna know who I think it was?
WILL
Not really, no.
KIM
Fergus McCauley. That ring a bell?
MAX
A silver bell?
WILL
Who the fucks that?
KIM
Come on, Willy. I thought we were
buddies. I gave you a cigarette,
remember?
WILL
What the fuck do you want from me?
KIM
I want you to give every detail of
that conversation with Fergus.
WILL
I told you, its not F-KIM
A parking garage at two in the
morning? You two blowing each other
or what?
WILL
You can hardly fucking see the
person in the car. How do you know
its this Fergus guy Im meeting
with?
KIM
Will, you withheld information.
(to Max)
Say, Max, whats the word for doing
something like that?
Suicide.

MAX

WILL
I didnt withhold shit from you
people.

81.
KIM
What did you talk about?
WILL
Fuck you, and fuck this limp-dick
donkey-fucking faggot sitting
behind me.
Max laughs.
MAX
Youre one eloquent motherfucker.
WILL
Go suck a whales choad.
MAX
Id be cheating on the donkey.
KIM
Max, please.
(to Will)
Did Fergus ever tell you about his
relationship with Justin?
Will SLAMS his fists on the table.
WILL
I dont fucking know Fergus! Im
not telling you shit! You fucking
hear me? Know what? I want a
lawyer, now.
A lawyer?

KIM

WILL
Right fucking now!
MAX
Easy there, Al Pacino. You havent
been arrested. Not yet, anyway. You
could walk right out of here. Fuck,
well even roll a red carpet.
KIM
Just know, this is your last chance
to cooperate before we blow this
whole thing open.
MAX
And we will. Know why?

82.
KIM
Because we like making money. Fucks
like you, youre our paycheck.
MAX
Straight motherfucking dough,
homie.
WILL
Who you think youre fucking with?
You think this is my first fucking
time around the block? That what
you think? You trying to fucking
intimidate me? You know my life?
Where Ive been? What Ive seen?
You know nothing. You have nothing.
KIM
Who said there was something to
get?
MAX
Were just talking. We can talk
sports if you want. You like the
Bruins?
WILL
Fuck this. Im out.
He stands up.
KIM
Why are you protecting the kid that
killed your friend?
WILL
He didnt kill Justin.
KIM
How can you be sure? Youre saying
you dont know him.
Fuck you.

WILL

KIM
You rolled with the tide, didnt
you. You let him spill your boys
blood, and you stayed silent. For
what? For respect?
MAX
Legs spread like a good little
whore.

83.
KIM
Maybe Justin was holding your sorry
ass back anyway. Maybe thats why.
Will KICKS his chair aside.
WILL
I should kill you, fucking pig! How
fucking dare you say that shit
about my friend!
He FLIPS the table over and Kim jumps out of her seat. Max
stands up.
KIM
Max, sit down.
Max sits.
KIM (CONTD)
(to Will)
If he was really your friend, youd
tell me.
Will flips her off and storms out of the room. Kim turns to
Max.
MAX
There goes that.
KIM
What? You think Im gonna let him
off?
MAX
You saw how he reacted.
KIM
Im close, Max.
MAX
Whats your next move?
KIM
Press the girlfriend.
EXT. POLICE STATION - DAY
Will exits the police station, strangely calm. He takes out
his phone and dials a number, waiting for a pickup.

84.
WILL
(into phone)
Hey, its me.
(a beat)
Yeah. Listen, I think its time.
INT. STRIP CLUB - NIGHT
A completely nude WAITRESS walks through the club holding a
tray of three drinks.
STRIPPERS do their provocative dances as MALE CLUB-GOERS
cheer them on.
INT. STRIP CLUB (BACK ROOM) - NIGHT
The room is poorly lit, a single fluorescent light flickering
on the ceiling.
The waitress enters, setting drinks in front of each of the
three men sitting around a makeshift poker table. She leaves.
Chewing on a cigar is BARRY OMALLEY (70s, Irish accent,
frail, balding). He plays with his associates FRANK (60s) and
NILES (60s).
NILES
Ill tell you, Barry, hes a rotten
kid.
BARRY
Even the best of lads have their
bursts of stupidity.
FRANK
He broke promises.
BARRY
Arrogance of youth.
FRANK
Come on, Barry. There are better
people to take under your wing than
this fucking kid.
NILES
(to Barry)
What do you see in him, anyway?

85.
FRANK
(to Barry)
He never had the authority in the
first pla-BARRY
He made his play. Not saying I
agree with what he did, but a mans
gotta stand with his choices.
NILES
Barry, listen to me. This kidll be
the end of everything we built.
Fergus enters the room.
Hey.

FERGUS

BARRY
(to Frank and Niles)
Leave us.
Frank and Niles leave the room, giving Fergus spiteful looks.
BARRY (CONTD)
(to Fergus)
Have a seat, my boy.
Fergus sits across from Barry.
FERGUS
Thank you for taking the time.
BARRY
Hows your father doing these days?
FERGUS
Not much better.
BARRY
Thats unfortunate. Anyway, Ive
been appraised of your situation.
FERGUS
What should I do?
BARRY
What do you think you should do?
A beat.
FERGUS
If I knew I wouldnt be here.

86.
BARRY
When a man is blinded by
circumstance, he should minimize
risk. Be swift and decisive.
Fergus nods.
BARRY (CONTD)
Get what Im saying, son?
Yeah.

FERGUS

BARRY
Now, tell me right here. And be
honest. Did you do it?
No.

FERGUS

BARRY
Swear on your mothers grave?
Yes.

FERGUS

BARRY
Any idea who it was?
FERGUS
Could be the niggers. Maybe trying
to get back at me by pinning this
shit on me.
BARRY
Is there anything else that could
float to the top should you get
yourself caught?
I dont...

FERGUS

BARRY
Think long and hard, boy-o.
FERGUS
There...there was this pharmacist a
couple weeks back. Long story
short, he had to be taken care of.
If they start poking around about
the junkie, they could...maybe find
something. Or one of my boys could
spill something.

87.
A beat.
BARRY
Do you know whos pointing you out?
FERGUS
Yeah. Yeah, I do.
BARRY
Alright. You listen close,
McCauley. Get rid of them. You
cant risk anymore suspicion.
FERGUS
Wouldnt that just make me look
more suspicious?
BARRY
How directly did they mention you?
FERGUS
From what I gather, not by name.
BARRY
In that case, you should be fine.
Follow my advice. Then, when all is
said and done, play stupid.
Alright.

FERGUS

Barry stands, then Fergus does the same. He hugs Fergus and
kisses him on the cheek.
BARRY
Youre a good kid, Fergus. Your
daddy and I seldom saw eye-to-eye,
nevertheless, he understood the
importance of loyalty.
Fergus looks away. Barry SMACKS the cheek he just kissed.
BARRY (CONTD)
Look at me.
Sorry.

FERGUS

BARRY
Use reliable people. Dont go
anywhere near it. Understood?
FERGUS
Yes, Mr. OMalley.

88.
BARRY
Good. Now fuck off.
Fergus leaves the room.
INT. DAISYS APARTMENT - NIGHT
Daisy sits on her couch, face swollen and bruised. Kim and
Max sit on two chairs across from her.
KIM
Why wont you tell us?
She doesnt answer.
KIM (CONTD)
Dont you want us to find whoever
did that?
Silence.
KIM (CONTD)
Staying silent wont do you any
good, Daisy.
Still nothing.
MAX
Who did it?
KIM
Was it Fergus McCauley? Did he meet
with you like he met with Will?
MAX
You remember Will, right?
KIM
Course she does.
MAX
You shouldnt have let us in if you
were gonna play mute. Ive got
better things to do with my time.
Other cases where people care
enough to open their mouths.
Daisy tears up.
DAISY
I dont know what to do. I dont
know whats right anymore.

89.
Kim leans in close.
KIM
Indulge us.
INT. JESSES CAR - NIGHT
Jesse and Will are parked under a bridge. Jesse sprinkles
some cocaine on the steering wheel and snorts it.
Will snorts some cocaine off of his finger.
WILL
Any regrets, Jesse?
JESSE
Hell of a fucking thing for you to
ask me.
Figured.

WILL

JESSE
Thought the piece of shit was our
friend.
WILL
Taking my side?
JESSE
If I wasnt, youd be dead right
now.
Will makes a line of cocaine on the dashboard.
JESSE (CONTD)
You think Fergie might have taken
Justin out?
WILL
Fuck, probably.
JESSE
I knew the two of them had their
problems and all, but its not at
all like Fergie to pop one of his
own guy-BAM! A van t-bones the car, sending it SPINNING. Cocaine and
glass fly all over the place.
The spinning stops. Bruised and bloodied, Will and Jesse look
out at the van, its headlights beaming at both of them.

90.
WILL
The fuck is this?
Four HOODED FIGURES emerge from the van.
A robbery?

JESSE

The figures reveal automatic weapons.

Fuck me!

WILL

Jesse tries to start the car as Will jumps in the back seat.
The figures OPEN FIRE, bullets SLICING through the doors and
leather seats.
Jesse puts the car in reverse, immediately getting HIT with a
barrage of bullets, blood splattering all over the place as
he drives backwards.
The car CRASHES into the wall behind it, a motionless Jesses
foot still on the pedal.
Will comes up and turns the gear in drive, abruptly making
the car go forward.
Bullets PIERCE through the car, HITTING him in the shoulder
and leg.
Fuck!

WILL (CONTD)

He CRASHES into one of the figures, sending him ROLLING over

the car.
As the other figures reload, Will opens the driver door and
pushes Jesse out.
WILL (CONTD)
Im sorry, man.
Will painfully climbs to the drivers seat and hits the gas
pedal, speeding out of the area.
EXT. HIGHWAY - NIGHT
Jesses car has been blown apart. Both rearview mirrors hang
loose. Smoke spews from the engine. The tail lights have been
shot out, as have all side windows.

91.
Despite the damage, it soldiers forward, its popped left tire
spraying sparks.
EXT. GAS STATION - NIGHT
Will staggers out of the car, forgetting to put it in park.
It rolls forward as he limps toward the liquor store.
Blood drips on the floor as he goes, creating a crimson
trail.
WILL
Hey! Help! Somebody!
He collapses to the floor. The stores CLERK sees him from
inside and runs over to help.
INT. DAISYS APARTMENT - NIGHT
Kim, Max, and Daisy are in the same spots they were before.
DAISY
Thats...all I know.
MAX
Enough jerking us around, Daisy.
Tell us now.
DAISY
Ive told you everything!
KIM
You wanna do this at the station?
Then fine. Come on, lets go.
Max notices something to the side. His eyes go wide.
Kim!

MAX

A MASKED GUNMAN is on the other side of the window, standing

on the fire escape. He takes aim with an uzi.
KIM
(to Daisy)
Get down!
He OPENS FIRE as Max dives to the floor. Kim leaps toward
Daisy, tackling her to the floor as the couches get RIPPED to
shreds.

92.
Feathers flying everywhere, they crawl on their stomachs
toward the kitchen and take cover behind a counter.
The masked man BREAKS the window with his gun and walks in,
SHOOTING at the counter before his clip runs out.
DAISY
(whispers)
Were gonna die. Fuck.
KIM
(whispers)
Just stay down.
As the man reloads, Max pulls out his pistol and FIRES two
blind shots. The man lunges behind a couch.
MAX
Hey, fuckface. Any idea who youre
shooting at?
Max and the gunman pop out of cover at the same time, guns
pointed.
Max SHOOTS him in the shoulder and he plops to the ground.
Hes down.

MAX (CONTD)

He goes over to the writhing man, kicking the uzi away from
him.
Who sent--

MAX (CONTD)

BAM! A shotgun blast RIPS through the front door, HITTING Max
in the neck and back.
The door is KICKED open and MASKED GUNMAN #2 enters, holding
a shotgun.
Before Max can aim his gun, the man SHOOTS him in the chest,
sending him FLYING onto the torn-apart couch, dead.
MASKED GUNMAN #2
Fuck, man. You alright?
Masked Gunman #1 stands up, picking up his gun.
MASKED GUNMAN #1
The girl...behind the counter.
Kim closes her eyes and pulls out her pistol.

93.

Fuck it.

KIM

DAISY
What are you doing?
Kim leaps over the counter.
No! No!

DAISY (CONTD)

As the first gunman turns, Kim SHOOTS him in the head.

Gunman #2 takes aim at her and she tumbles. He FIRES and
misses, hitting the counter.
Kim pops up and SHOOTS him twice in the chest. He goes down.
She goes over to the bodies, SHOOTING the second gunman once
more for good measure.
DAISY (O.S.) (CONTD)
Is...is it over?
A smoke alarm BUZZES outside, SOUNDS of hysteria and panic
echo.
Kims eyes turn to Max, who lies dead on the couch, blood
pouring down to the floor.
She kneels beside Max.
Im sorry.

KIM

As Daisy walks over to them, Kim takes Maxs left hand and
pulls off his wedding ring, putting it into her pocket.
She kisses him on the forehead.
EXT. APARTMENT COMPLEX - NIGHT
Ambulances, a fire truck, and news vans have all converged on
the building, joining hundreds of ONLOOKERS peering from
behind yellow police tape.
Kim sits in the back of an ambulance, face ashen, covered
with a thick blanket. She stares blankly.
Quaid emerges from the crowd of onlookers, forced to identify
himself to the UNIFORMED OFFICERS.
He comes over and sits next to Kim.

94.
QUAID
You alright, Kim?
She nods her head.
QUAID (CONTD)
Christ, what a fucking mess.
KIM
I dragged him into this.
QUAID
It was his job, Kim.
KIM
Any ID on the bodies yet?
Quaid puts his arm around Kim.
QUAID
You should go home.
KIM
I should be dead.
QUAID
Kim, look at me.
(looks into her eyes)
Go home.
KIM
Wheres the girl?
QUAID
Well take care of it. Seung and
Ramirez are gonna talk to her.
KIM
Have they called Maxs wife?
QUAID
Well do that, just-KIM
Where are they putting Daisy?
QUAID
Kim. Look at you, youre covered in
blood. You need to go home.
KIM
What the fuck do I have!? I have no
fucking home!

95.

Kim...

QUAID

KIM
Im finishing this! Im finishing
the fucking interview!
Come here.

QUAID

Quaid tries to embrace her, but she tries to push him off.
KIM
Fucking stop! No!
She breaks down into tears, crying into his arms.
QUAID
Its okay. Its okay.
KIM
(crying)
Theyre gone.
QUAID
Its gonna be okay.
He kisses her head and looks on at the ambulances, a look of
hopelessness in his eyes.
INT. MCCAULEYS BAR - NIGHT
The bar is completely packed. A large green sign on the wall
reads HAPPY HOUR.
Alone in a booth sits Fergus, impatiently waiting as he
drinks from a stein of beer.
His MESSENGER (18) walks over and sits across from him.
FERGUS
About fucking time. So what
happened?
EXT. MCCAULEYS BAR - NIGHT
Fergus runs out of the bar and VOMITS on the sidewalk.
FERGUS
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!

96.
He settles down, sitting on another part of the sidewalk,
tearing up.
Fergus reaches into his pocket, pulling out a cellphone. He
accidentally drops it, hands shaking.
INT. HOTEL ROOM - NIGHT
Two UNIFORMED COPS blocking the door step aside for Seung and
Ramirez.
Daisy sits on the bed in a state of near-shock.
The detectives pull up chairs and sit across from Daisy.
SEUNG
Hope youre ready to talk.
DAISY
Where...where is-RAMIREZ
Shes taking a break.
SEUNG
Were here to finish what we
started.
DAISY
The other detective...is he gonna
be...
RAMIREZ
No. So dont let him die for
nothing.
Daisy holds back her tears, burying her face in her palms.
DAISY
(whispering)
This is all fucked up.
SEUNG
What did you say?
She gasps and quickly brings her head up.
DAISY
Wheres Will McFry?
RAMIREZ
Will McFrys alive. Hes being kept
in a hospital right n--

97.
DAISY
What happened to him?
SEUNG
You wanna stop this trail of bodies
or not?
A beat.
DAISY
This is all my fault. I shouldve
come forward.
SEUNG
What was keeping you?
Fergus.

DAISY

RAMIREZ
He the one did that to your face?
She nods.
SEUNG
Did he kill Justin Parker?
No answer.
SEUNG (CONTD)
(more firm)
Did Fergus McCauley kill Justin
Park-Yes.

DAISY

(tears)
Yes, that...fucking piece of shit
killed my boyfriend.
SEUNG
How do you know?
She wipes her tears.
DAISY
Will told me. That was back when he
carried H for Fergus. He doesnt do
it anymore.
SEUNG
Did he tell you why?

98.
DAISY
He said it was because Justin
threatened to snitch Fergus and his
crew out to the police. But Justin
never told me he was planning on
doing something like that.
RAMIREZ
And why didnt you come out about
this earlier? Its not like it
incriminates you or anything.
DAISY
Will told me Fergus would kill my
brother and my parents if I said
anything.
RAMIREZ
Has Fergus been known to do stuff
like this?
DAISY
I dont know any specifics, but
yeah. Ive heard things.
SEUNG
How well do you know him?
DAISY
Who? Fergus?
Yeah.

SEUNG

DAISY
Since ninth grade. Always a
douchebag, only back then he had
his dad to hold him back.
(a beat)
He kept me and Justin supplied.
Gave us a discount under the
condition that we sling drugs for
him.
Did you?

SEUNG

She shamefully nods.

DAISY
Am I...gonna go to jail?

99.
SEUNG
That youre gonna have to discuss
with a lawyer.
Daisy starts crying.
DAISY
(crying)
I wanna go home.
She falls back onto the bed.
INT. KIMS APARTMENT (BATHROOM) - NIGHT
Kim takes a warm shower, washing the blood and ashes off of
her face.
INT. KIMS APARTMENT (LIVING ROOM) - NIGHT
Kim, hair still wet, sits on her couch, pouring herself a
glass of whiskey.
She turns on the television. On the screen, a news report
showing cell surveillance footage of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is
shown.
The curly-haired boy looks directly at the camera, showing a
peace sign, and then a blurred-out middle finger.
Kim looks at the screen, and then at her whiskey,
contemplating.
KIM
Youre not gonna fucking win.
She THROWS the glass at the television screen, SHATTERING
both.
INT. KIMS APARTMENT (KITCHEN) - NIGHT
Kim empties two whiskey bottles into the sink and then tosses
them into a trash bag along with over a dozen other empty
bottles.
EXT. KIMS APARTMENT COMPLEX - NIGHT
Kim walks out with the trash bag and tosses it on the street.
She goes back inside.

100.
INT. KIMS APARTMENT (BEDROOM) - NIGHT
Kim puts on a fresh pair of business clothes and then
attaches her badge and her gun.
INT. HOSPITAL ROOM - NIGHT
Will is laid up, wrapped in bandages, an IV in his arm. A
NURSE adjusts his pillow.
Nurse?

WILL

He is weak, his voice barely audible.

Yes, Will?

NURSE

WILL
I need to talk with someone.
NURSE
Youre mothers outside, I could
get-WILL
No. Police. Tell them I need to
see...Kim Winter. Only her. Tell
them Ill give up everything.
EXT. MCCAULEYS BAR - NIGHT
Kims car nearly jumps the curb as she parks beside the bar.
She gets out, slamming the door shut.
INT. MCCAULEYS BAR - NIGHT
Kim storms into the bar, a thinned-out crowd of downtrodden
DRUNKS staring at her.
She takes a moment to appraise her audience before pulling
out her gun and pointing it toward the BARTENDER (50s).
MCCAULEYS BARTENDER
Whoa! Fuck is this?
Kim pulls her coat aside to show her badge.
KIM
Boston Police. Wheres junior?

101.
MCCAULEYS BARTENDER
Get the fuck outta here.
KIM
Did you not hear me?
MCCAULEYS BARTENDER
Think I fucking care?
Hes here.

KIM

MCCAULEYS BARTENDER
This heres trespassing.
KIM
And this heres aiding and
abetting. So where is he?
A beat.
MCCAULEYS BARTENDER
Mens room.
INT. MCCAULEYS BAR (MENS BATHROOM) - NIGHT
Fergus snorts a line of cocaine. His head DARTS up. He looks
at himself in the mirror and takes a swig from a bottle of
beer.
He SLAPS himself in the face.
FERGUS
Youve fucking been through worse.
Keep your shit together.
Kim bursts inside, gun pointed.
KIM
Hands up, cocksucker.
FERGUS
Well, fuck me.
KIM
Its over, McCauley. Daisy
confessed.
FERGUS
Confessed to fucking what? You
believe that cunt?

102.
KIM
Hands over your head. I wont ask
you again.
FERGUS
Eat a dick.
Fergus THROWS his beer bottle at her, SHATTERING it right on
her face.
He pushes her to the floor and runs out. Kim bleeds profusely
from her face, struggling to stand up.
INT. MCCAULEYS BAR - NIGHT
A bloodied Kim runs out of the mens bathroom, everyone
looking at her.
KIM
(to Bartender)
Which fucking way?
MCCAULEYS BARTENDER
The obvious.
She sprints out the front door.
EXT. EASTBOROUGH STREET - NIGHT
Kim comes out. She spots the stumbling silhouette of Fergus,
dissolving into the shadowy horizon.
She runs after him, closing the gap rather quickly.
Fergus is struggling against the wind, tears pouring out of
his eyes. He peaks over his shoulder and TRIPS on a sidewalk,
falling face-first on the concrete.
Fuck!

FERGUS

KIM
Freeze, McCauley!
Fuck you!

FERGUS

He tries to get up, but she SHOOTS the ground. He jumps up,
startled.
FERGUS (CONTD)
Fuck! Goddamnit!

103.
KIM
You gonna put those hands up or-Fergus pulls out a pistol and SHOOTS the top of her ear off.
She FIRES a blind shot as she screams in pain, missing.
He flees.
EXT. INTERSECTION - NIGHT
Kim follows Fergus across the intersection, suddenly blinded
by the approaching headlights of a minivan, which SKIDS to a
stop.
She leaps, rolling over the hood and hitting the pavement as
the minivan comes to a halt.
From the other side, Fergus FIRES several shots as Kim goes
back and takes cover behind the minivan, glass falling on her
head.
KIM
(to minivan driver)
Get down!
The shooting stops. Kim continues running after Fergus, who
is climbing a gate.
Kim does the same, sliding down a steep hill and falling into
a construction pit.
EXT. CONSTRUCTION PIT - NIGHT
Kim stands up, gun pointed. She approaches a concrete
structure at the sites center. It appears to be a walkway,
leading to a dark passage. It is surrounded by three pillars.
Fergus is hiding behind the center pillar, Kim slowly getting
closer.
KIM
You in the sewer, McCauley?
A blind GUNSHOT hits the gravel below her feet, the emerging
dust getting into her eyes.
Fergus SPRAYS shots and runs into the sewer passage. Kim
takes cover behind an port-a-potty.
KIM (CONTD)
Shit, shit.

104.
INT. SEWER CHANNEL - NIGHT
Fergus desperately hurries through the winding, damp
corridors of the channel, frantically searching for an exit.
He finds a gaping gutter to climb through, elevated no more
than four feet from the sewage oozing under him.
Using an exposed pipe as leverage, he maneuvers himself
through the gutter.
EXT. EASTBOROUGH STREET - NIGHT
Fergus crawls out of the gutter, crying in pain, shoulders
CRACKING as he squeezes through.
FERGUS
Mother...fucker. Fucking pig.
The area is deserted.
He staggers forward, clutching his left shoulder.
INT. SEWER CHANNEL - NIGHT
Kim runs through the maze. She hunches over, VOMITING into
the sewage.
KIM
Argh! Shit!
Her legs are covered in liquid waste, clothes covered in
blood. The wounds from her face are leaking. Her lips
swollen.
She lets out a twisted, sardonic laugh before taking out her
cellphone and dialing a number.
KIM (CONTD)
(into phone)
Hello. Captain? Its me.
QUAID (V.O.)
(over phone)
Kim? Why the fuck havent you been
answering your calls?
KIM
(into phone)
Yeah, look...I kinda fucked up.

105.
INT. SQUAD CAR - NIGHT
Kim is sprawled on the backseat of a BPD squad car, separated
from Quaid and a UNIFORMED COP, who drives the cruiser.
She has changed into clean clothes, bandages wrapped all over
her face.
QUAID
Not a word. Not a fucking word.
I had him.

KIM

QUAID
What the fuck were you doing there
in the first fucking place!? Now,
because you decided to go all Dirty
Harry on the bastard, we have
fucking nothing!
KIM
Well what was I supposed to do!?
You gave me the case, I wanna be
the one to fucking solve it.
QUAID
This was never your case, Kim.
KIM
Oh, so now that the bullshit case
you gave me turns out to be solid
after all, I go back to getting
shit-canned. Is that it?
QUAID
No, youre getting shit-canned
because you pull stupid shit like
this.
KIM
What happens when you catch him?
Huh? He testifies. Gives up the big
heads. All in the fucking game,
right, Captain?
QUAID
Im gonna pretend I didnt hear
that.
A beat.
KIM
So, what? You taking me home?

106.
QUAID
No. Hospital.
Im fine.

KIM

QUAID
Everything gotta be about you? Its
Will McFry.
KIM
What about him?
QUAID
He got caught in this shitstorm
too. Managed to survive two
gunshots. He wants to see you.
Why?

KIM

QUAID
To confess.
INT. HOSPITAL CORRIDOR - NIGHT
Kim strolls through the crowded hallway, Quaid following
closely behind.
They stop at Room 17, the nurse waiting outside.
KIM
Hows he doing?
NURSE
Weve stabilized his condition.
Its a miracle he even survived.
What happened to your head?
KIM
Is he coherent?
NURSE
Yes. Amazingly enough. His
tolerance is through the roof. He
requested someone.
KIM
Yours truly.
NURSE
Okay step right in.

107.
Kim turns the door handle, Quaid behind her.
NURSE (CONTD)
Oh, sir. He was...pretty adamant
that he wanted to only see
Detective Winter.
QUAID
Fucks that supposed to mean?
KIM
Captain. Its fine.
She walks in.
INT. HOSPITAL ROOM - NIGHT
Kim sits on a stool next to Wills bed.
WILL
What do you know? A cop when you
need one. Your night as rough as
mine?
KIM
They got us good.
WILL
Not good enough.
She smiles.
WILL (CONTD)
You wouldnt happen to have any
cigs on you, would you?
KIM
Not today, sorry.
WILL
You like lasagna?
What?

KIM

WILL
My mom. She brought over some
lasagna. I cant stand the shit.
Its right over there. You want
some?
Im good.

KIM

108.
Will stares at the ceiling.
WILL
Howd it fucking get to this?
KIM
Will. You dont have to protect him
anymore.
WILL
What? You catch him?
A beat.
KIM
Yeah. Hes in our custody right
now. You dont have do be scared.
Scared...

WILL

KIM
Its over. Fergus is over.
WILL
Wheres Daisy?
KIM
Shes safe.
Will looks at his reflection in the black television screen.
WILL
I did this. All of it.
KIM
Its not your fault, Will.
WILL
Fergus didnt kill Justin.
KIM
Of course he didnt. Hes a pussy.
He probably had someone do it.
WILL
(shakes head)
No. He had nothing to do with it.
Kim leans in forward.
What?

KIM

109.
WILL
Justin, he wasnt the same. I
didnt even know him anymore.
Because of the slinging, he got
addicted. Coke, H, oxy, you fucking
name it. And Daisy...
(chokes up)
Daisy was the one who suffered for
it. Hed get high. Fucking prick
would beat the shit out of her.
Raped her, even. And she did
nothing. She just...took it.
Convinced herself that bastard was
the love of her life. She wouldnt
listen to me. But I knew, deep
down, behind the scars and the
cigarette burns and the bruises,
that she wanted to get away from
him. So, I told him to meet me at
the tracks. Told him I had an extra
pack of coke and was willing to
give it away for free. And...thats
when I killed him.
(cries)
I killed my best friend. And I
blamed it on Fergus. Im sorry,
Justin...Im sorry.
Kim is absolutely dumbfounded.
KIM
Will. Will, look at me.
Will settles down and wipes his tears, looking her in the
eyes.
KIM (CONTD)
This...this stays between us.
But I--

WILL

KIM
I dont care. You dont breathe a
word of this. Not a fucking word.
What?

WILL

KIM
When you get released, youre gonna
live the rest your life like none
of this ever happened.

110.
KIM (CONT'D)
Go to school, play hockey, smoke
pot with your friends, and most
importantly, shut...up.
WILL
What kind of a fucking cop are you?
Im a murderer.
KIM
Ive looked into the eyes of many
evil men, Will. Youre not one of
them.
INT. HOSPITAL CORRIDOR - NIGHT
Kim comes out of the room, interrupting the conversation
between Quaid and the nurse.
Quaid walks up to her.
QUAID
So whatd he say?
KIM
Nothing useful. Hes completely in
the dark.
You sure?

QUAID

KIM
Never been more sure in my life.
EXT. PIER - NIGHT
Fergus, shivering in the cold as his left arm dangles from
his dislocated shoulder, pulls out his cellphone.
He contemplates, before dialing a three-digit number.
Fuck it.

FERGUS

He presses the phone to his ear.

FERGUS (CONTD)
(into phone)
Hello? Listen very fucking closely,
because Im only gonna say this
once. This is Fergus McCauley. I
wanna surrender. You hear that?
(a beat)

111.
FERGUS (CONTD)
Im willing to cooperate. Get put
in witness protection with my dad,
the fucking works. Ill say
whatever the fuck they want me to
say. And just for the record, that
fucking cop shot at me first. If
the bitch hadnt acted so
unprofessionally, this may have
been resolved in a more dignified
manner. I fucking hate running.
Look, I think Im being followed.
Cant be sure. You need to pick me
up. You need to pick me up now. Im
at the-A VOICE (O.S.)
Put the fucking phone down, Fergie.
Fergus turns around to see Frank, shotgun pointed.
Oh, fuck.
Hang up.

FERGUS
FRANK

He disconnects the call.

FERGUS

INT. KIMS CAR - DAY
Kim drives in Quinns neighborhood. She parks on the sidewalk
on the opposite of where his house is.
She looks at the house, contemplating. As soon as she opens
her car door, the front door of Quinns house opens.
A WOMAN (30s) comes out. Quinn peaks his head out and she
turns to him.
The two embrace and kiss.
Kim grins, closes her door, and drives away.

112.
INT. BAR - NIGHT
The same exact scene where Kim made her first appearance,
only now from her perspective.
From the dark booth, Kim watches Jeremy clean the bar,
occasionally taking sips from a beer stein.
She contemplates.
JEREMY (O.S.)
You planning on leaving anytime
soon?
Kim looks at her beer stein, then back up at Jeremy.
FADE OUT.
