Objective:
SWBAT identify the best part of their stories and differentiate relevant versus
irrelevant details to their personal narratives.

Procedures:
T reviews writers prior knowledge of writers craft tools and
informed they will learn a new tool for planning.
T introduces a new sample personal narrative about going to
New York City to see a family member in the New York City
Marathon with a T displays a photo of the marathon participant
crossing the finish line- the best part.
T orally retells the story with irrelevant details and asks if telling
that story is a good choice Includes telling the best part when
the participant crossed the finish line- referring to the photo..
T will inquire which parts were important to the story.
T models how the best part of the story is the most important
and plans to zoom in on that moment with Story Mountain
worksheet. Write 1-2 details of rising action going up the
mountain, the best part at the peak, and something that
happened right after that is also relevant to the best part.
T gives examples off relevant vs. irrelevant details in stories.
Explaining how a reader may become disengaged if the story is
too lengthy and filled with irrelevant details.
T adds Story Mountain graphic to model writers toolbox.
S are instructed to meet with writing partners to have a
conversation about the next story they will right. Together, they
will focus on important details, and the best part. Jotting down
their ideas on the story mountain worksheet.
After about 15 minutes, S share with class the best part of their
partners stories.
S are given Story Mountain graphics to glue into their own
Writers Toolbox.
