Objective:
Students will be introduced to the Writers Craft of Sound Words through a
mentor text and are encouraged to use this craft in their personal narrative
writing.

Procedures:
S will be read Come on Rain! by Karen Hesse as mentor text
T pauses to address how characters show they are happy by smiling in

pictures. Hesse shows characters feelings instead of telling readers.


T stops at page with Mama sinking in her chair. S are prompted to turn
and talk to discuss what Mama is feeling. S share, the reader knows
Mama is hot because of the clues in words and pictures
T calls students one, showing S an index card with a feeling. S models
the feeling and the class guesses what the feeling is.
S & T complete a Show a Feeling anchor chart using examples from S
model and responses.
S add show a feeling graphic to their Writers Toolbox and are directed
to consider trying the new craft.
T confers with S during independent writing.
Come on Rain by Karen Hesse is added to the craft/mentor text
anchor chart including the book title, craft, and an example of the craft
being used in the story.
S who have tried using the Show a Feeling craft may share. Their
names are added to the chart.

Assessment:

At least 5 students have shared that they used the craft. Additional
understanding/use of craft is observable through conferencing.
