(you are welcome to write about the audience, the sound quality of the
group, or even the way the group is dressed and what they did on stage, etc.)
I have been to a few jazz ensemble concerts but I really liked the atmosphere of the bar. I
found it amusing how in to it people got especially those who danced. I enjoyed how
laid back it was with improvisation in comparison to the lesser improv I have seen in
previous jazz shows. The only downside was when one of the guitarists was soloing I
could hardly hear him but this wasnt because everyone else was too loud.
7. Composition I liked the best (if any) and why:
Title: It dont mean a thing (if it aint got that swing)
Composer: Duke Ellington
Form, if known: AABA
Historical style: Swing
Criticism of the performance: The trombone sound was strange at first but once
everyone started jamming together it was really good!
Overall reaction to this one work: the best part was when the trombone used the
bowler mute. I havent heard this song much without the vocals but it was still really
good without them. I enjoy the more upbeat songs.

8. Comments on the concert as a whole

This concert was really cool! I have been to a few organized jazz ensemble shows but
none that was like a jazz open mike night type concert. One of my favorite things is
when brass instruments use bowler mutes. The atmosphere of the bar was way more
relaxed and exciting than other shows I have been to. Having improvised performances
is fun because you never know exactly what will happen throughout a song or the
concert as a whole. The fact that it was not all the same performers throughout the
show also added to the fun! After the break when one guy started playing blues I did
not expect that but he was really good too. I will definitely be coming back to see more
shows.
