Lesson Plan

Name:

Amy Pineda

Activity Title:

Symmetry

School Name:

CNCA Kayne Siart

Grade:

1st grade

Objective: Students will be exposed to a math concept they will encounter in the future.
Students will be able to identify the concept of symmetry by making cut outs.

Activity: I will start off the lesson by defining the term symmetry. I will then show a quick
demonstration of the activity. The students will be given a couple pieces of colored paper and
a set of scissors. They will fold the paper in half, in fours, or in sixths and then they will cut
out as many shapes as they like. Once they are done cutting out shapes, they will open their
piece of paper and they will see the shapes cut out in symmetrical fashion. Once finished, we
will verify the number of shapes used through a chart and we will discuss the results as a class.

Materials: Colored paper, scissors, shapes chart

Reflection: The students will learn how to define the mathematical term, symmetry. They will
also learn how to show an example of symmetry by cutting out shapes.
