Math + Art Girls Group:

Geometry, Symmetry and Prime: Piet Mondrian

____________________________________________________________

During this activity, students define

symmetry and asymmetry and
create an original piece of art as a
team using symmetrical and
asymmetrical shapes.
The students also define primary
colors, shades, and mixtures; this is
a strong analogy to the concept of
Prime. Using paint chips, the
students create a collage as a
team.
After learning about Piet Mondrian,
looking at examples of his art and
the use of his art in pop culture, the
students design individual works of
art in Mondrians style. Discussions
include the use of symmetry to
make asymmetrical designs and
color as pattern.
