Stages of writing development


Preliterate: Drawing
In this stage, children
Draw to stand for writing
Think that drawings deliver a
purposeful message
Read their drawings as if they were
written (Morrow, 2007)
This child Drew a boy instead of writing,
he/she wants to deliver a massage.

Preliterate: scribbling
In this stage, children:

Scribble intends it as writing

Early emergent: letter like form


The shapes in writing actually resemble
letters and they aren't actually letters.
They look like poorly formed letters but
unique creations (Morrow, 2007)

invented spelling for all words that he
wrote such as: bs instead of bus. He/she
depends on sounds in writing (phonemes).
