The core of Interdisciplinary Studies is to define interdisciplinary studies, once you

carefully read the given definition provided from an interdisciplinarian you begin the journey of
defining the term in your own words. So far I believe interdisciplinary studies is defined as a
system of knowledge that combines two or more disciplines that can solve real-world problems.
Once your true meaning of interdisciplinary studies is discovered most continue to expand their
learning. I have learned so many key concepts, one major concept is the silo perspective. The
average college student would learn the concepts and skill sets found within their particular
discipline when learning new lessons. As a Biology major I always viewed a new concept from
a scientific origin and from that origin research was conducted to expand the knowledge we gain.
This way of learning and thinking became the norm for me and therein was my silo perspective.
Silo perspective is viewing a word, phrase, sentence, or outlook through a tunnel/limited opinion.
This perspective therefore limits ones reach of how much you could learn. Interdisciplinarians
triangulate perspectives from more than one angle, eliminating the silo perspective that most
view new information. Since becoming an interdisciplinarian I have broaden my beliefs and
opinions based on the diversity surrounding me. Amazingly, that one concept changed so many
objectives I previously knew of but thats not even close to all of the new information Ive
gained from interdisciplinary studies. Embracing diversity, taking risks, being curious, and
having a strong sense of adventure were key concepts that I continue to strengthen and apply
daily whether I am in school, at work, or even in my personal life.
Every key concept was learned in various and unique ways that pertain to the real world.
For instance, risk taking for me was developed through conducting research. I went outside of
my comfort zone and researched new and exciting topics with hopes to discover new knowledge
that possibly someone else could use in the future. Another key concept I learned uniquely was
being overly curious about everything that grabs my attention. From an early age we begin to
tame our curiosity which only hinders our vast experiences. I decided to embrace and explore
my curiosity. From that I discovered just how open I am to so many unanswered critical topics
that happen to be essential in the progression of learning. Had I tamed my curiosity I would
have never stepped out of my comfort zone, taken risks, and ultimately come out of my shell.
Being an introvert has its cons; one being staying within certain bounds due to fear of rejection
or the unknown. Yet, interdisciplinary studies has broken that change in myself and now I
continue to grow and learn. Although some of the key concepts I have learned are new to me I

believe I will always use each and every one of them throughout my lifetime and thats the
biggest achievement anyone can ask for.
