College Essay
My Choice of College is Alabama State University
because I always wanted to go there since I was
young. My God sister went to this school and I
always like the school spirit that they show
towards their student athletes. ASU is a public
institution that was founded in 1887. It has a total
undergraduate enrollment of 4,803, its setting is
urban, and the campus size is 172 acres. It utilizes
a semester-based academic calendar. Alabama
State University's ranking in the 2016 edition of
Best Colleges is Regional Universities, Tier 2. Their
in-state tuition and fees are $8,702 but out-ofstate tuition and fees are $15,656.
It is Located in Montgomery, ASU was founded by
nine freed slaves who raised $500 to open a school
for African-Americans. ASU, which was originally
named Lincoln Normal School, now offers nearly 50
undergraduate, graduate and continuing education
programs to students of all races. Many Alabama
State graduate students are enrolled in the
education school, and the university also offers
master's programs in health, among other fields.
Outside the classroom, ASU students can get
involved by joining more than 70 campus clubs and
by playing for the ASU Hornets varsity sports

teams, which compete in the NCAA Division I


Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Considering Alabama State Universitys history,
its no surprise that its more notable alumni
include prominent civil rights leaders, such as the
Rev. Ralph David Abernathy, the Rev. Fred
Shuttlesworth and Fred Gray, the attorney who
defended Rosa Parks during the Montgomery Bus
Boycott and Martin Luther Kings first civil rights
lawyer.
