Annotated Bibliography #5: Adrenaline

Written by Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Brian B

Hoffman, Adrenaline examines adrenaline in all its capacities, from a vital regulator of
physiological functions to the subject of Nobel Prizewinning breakthroughs. Discovered in
1894, adrenaline has become a mainstay in the hormone research department due to its
prototypical biochemical pathways. This has led to the development of powerful new drugs for
the healthcare system.
In the book, Hoffman makes way for the scientists whom we owe our understanding of
the hormone by tracing their discoveries and aspirations individually, although culminating all of
its central ideas together. There is a large emphasis on how we should appreciate the the
significant role adrenaline has played in the further development of modern medical science. Not
only that, Hoffman also investigates the popular imagination of the hormone in which there are
supposed life-giving properties in which the dead can be revived. Hoffman does a phenomenal

job in bringing light to the scientific importance of adrenaline as well as its view from popular
speculation.
