Allaahumma ighfir lihayyinaa, wa mayyitinaa, wa shaahidinaa, wa ghaa-ibinaa, wa

Translation: Oh Allah ! Forgive those of us that are alive and those of us that
are dead; those of us that are present, and those of us who are absent: those of
that are young, and those of us that are adults; our males and females. Oh Alla
h! Whomsoever of us You keep alive, let him live as a follower of Islam, and who
msoever You cause to die, let him die as a Believer.

SALAT AL-JANAZA `ALA AL-GHA'IBIN
As it is known one of our brothers Abid Ghareeb died and I urge brothers to pray
janazah prayer in absentia 'AL-JANAZA `ALA AL-GHA'IBIN ' over him because there
is no one to performe prayer over him since he died among kufar in Sydney. Sinc
e it is colective duty to pray janazah over a passed away muslim it is obligator
y to pray janazah for the brother. His janazah is going to take place on wednesd
ay. Below are some of the proofs for the validity of the janazah prayer in absen
tia.
Abu Hurayra narrated that the Prophet e announced to the people the death of the
Negus (al-Najashi) on the same day that he died, then he came outside with them
to the (open air) place of prayer and said Allah is greatest! four times. (sahih
Muslim)
Jabir ibn `Abd Allah said that the Prophet e said: Today one righteous servant of
Allah has died: As-hama. Jabir continued: Then he rose and led us in prayer over
him. (sahih Muslim)
Ibn Qudama al Hanbali said in al-Mughni, Kitab al-jana'iz, section entitled Whoev
er misses the prayer offers it at the grave :
The funeral prayer over the dead who are in another locality is permissible with
the proper intention. One faces the Qibla and prays as in the presence of the b
ody, regardless whether the absent dead is in the direction of the Qibla or not,
or whether the distance between the respective countries warrants shortening th
e prayer during travel or not. Ibn Qudama, al-Mughni (vol. 2, p323)
Al-Mardaawi said in al-Insaaf : The funeral prayer may be offered in absentia wi
th the right intention. This is our view with regard to all cases (i.e., whether
the funeral prayer has already been offered or him or not, and whether he benef
ited the Muslim masses or not). This is the view of the majority of our companio
ns and many of them were definite about that. And it was narrated from Imam Ahma
d that it is not permissible to offer the funeral prayer in absentia. And it was
said that the funeral prayer may be offered if it has not yet been offered, oth
erwise it should not be done. This is the view favoured by Shaykh Taqiy al-Deen
and Ibn Abd al-Qawiy.
Shaykh al-Islam narrated that Imam Ahmad said: If a righteous man dies, then the
funeral prayer may be offered for him, and he quoted as evidence the story of t
he Negus. (vol 2, p 533)
Ibn Hazm states in his al-Muhallah (vol. 5, p.138), "And a dead Muslim is prayed
over even in absentia."
