A budget crisis in California is catalyzing a

paradigm shift: open source, electronic books will be

introduced into the primary and secondary school

systems forwarded by Governor Schwarzenegger

(Trimmer, 2009). California, of course, is a huge

market for text books which introduces a trend-setting

dynamic. Math and Science books will be used first,

and digital companies have the texts ready for

distribution, and the state has already run programs to

assess the applicability of the texts (Trimmer, 2009).

One advantage of a digital text is that information can

be revised as new information is constructed in a

discipline (Trimmer, 2009). Another hoped-for

advantage is that state money will be saved in an

already tight state budget (Trimmer, 2009).
