Research article:The Flipped Classroom: A Survey of the Research

The purpose of this research article was to see all the other research that is already out
there and put it all together in one article. The investigation was to see whether or not a
flipped classroom is an effective teaching method compared to the normal modern day
teaching techniques. This research Article is done by Jacob Lowell Bishop who teaches
at Utah State University and Dr. Matthew A Verleger who teaches Embry-Riddle
Aeronautical University. They define the flipped classroom as a new pedagogical
method and say that it is video lectures and practice problems as homework and more
group work and problem solving in the classroom. The flipped classroom is made up of
two key components, one is the human interaction which is the in class group activity
work and the other is using of the computer technology which is used to see the video
lectures that are given to the students for there homework. Technology has advanced
enough to allow us to feasible be able to do the flipped classroom but also to do it
effectively. The main thing that makes flipped classroom so effective is that it hits
multiple learning styles that a normal lesson can not accomplish. Another aspect of the

Flipped classroom that is effective is that it allows a lot of group work which means the
students are able to collaborate off each other. It must not be overlooked the fact that
the in class activities are just as intregal to the students as the video lectures are and
that these combined make the flipped classroom you need both not one or the other.
This can be a complication because students in group work can easily get off track. The
flipped classroom is a new theory so it is still out to be judged but the early results are
good and we need to keep improving on them to see the full effectiveness.
