Cultural Literacy Myth Reflection
When I first began to think of an idea and topic of a cultural literacy myth, it was very
difficult. I couldnt understand the concept of cultural literacy until Mrs. Knudson gave me great
examples on how, and what to write about. With the examples and discussions, it prompted me to
write about something that I genuinely cared about which was the topic of hip-hop. Being part of
the rap society, I understand that there are many negative myths that are placed upon it. The
myths that I wanted to exploit was that Hip-Hop causes sexism, misogyny, and violence. HipHop does not cause any of these negative act, but most certainly reflects the prevailing values of
society that were created by white supremist patriarchy.
Hip-hop is my news source, entertainment, culture, and lifestyle. It gives me great insight on
problems existing in the world, keeping me aware of my surroundings. There are great pieces of
gangsta, creative, and conscious rap videos that sends messages in my portfolio. Some messages
are violent, but they are a reflection of what happens in their lifestyle and how they go about in
solving their problems. I hope you enjoy!
