DATA ANALYSIS

AUDIENCE PROFILE

INTRODUCTION
In this presentation I will be analysing my
results from the K-pop survey I have constructed
K-pop is characterised with bright colours,
bubbly characters and is, as a genre in line with
the male gaze. It is also growing genre that has
extended to various western countries.
My questions in this survey may not be
understandable to people who do not have
extensive knowledge of the genre as I have
included many genre specific terms that others
may find unfathomable.

QUESTION 1- WHAT IS YOUR

GENDER?
The purpose of this question was to make any links between specific genders and
their idol gender preference. This question will also help me pinpoint my
demographic. This will help me design my magazine as certain genders will be
attracted to certain colour schemes. Three people did not answer my question.
This may be caused by sexuality and gender confusion. The graph below shows
that younger people are more susceptible to confused gender identity. This may
be the cause for the three people leaving that question out.

QUESTION 2-WHO ARE YOUR 5

ULTIMATE BIASES?

This question used the genre specific term bias which is your favourite member
from a group.
The answer of this question enables me to establish any favourite members amongst
the people who replied. This may also help me see what sub genres they may like
from their bias choices. This graph tells me although the most preferred company to
be in in YG (see slide 8) the artists in that company have the most popularity
amongst fans as 29 out of 105 biases were from SM. The pie chart
on the next slide also indicates that the preferred gender is males as 62 out of 105
bias answers were males.. This agrees with question 1 as the majority doing the
survey were women. However the fact that female biases were not preferred over
males shows that the ages of the partakers of the survey were teens
kkokokokokokokokokokookokokoko rather than pre teens and children as they
ioioioieorieoiroeiroeioioioi ioio if f f ff f show signs of interest in the opposite sex

hjfhdjhfjdhfidjhfidjfidjf j j j j j j j j same sex which younger girls usually do
more
okodkfokdofkdofkodkfodkofkodk often than older girls.

WHICH GROUPS DO YOU DISLIKE?

I included this question to rule out any reoccurring person or group. For example, if I
see that the groups that are disliked the most have cute girly concepts, I will change
my magazine cover accordingly. From this question, I learnt that the artist Hyuna
was disliked greatly. Surprisingly the 3d most favoured girl group from question 8
was also disliked greatly(girls generation).
From this I see which concepts are Disliked by kpop fans. Put simply my magazine
will include:
No overly sexualised Hyuna

No overly cute Girls

Generation
This means I will have to find a mid ground for my magazine model

DO YOU BUY CDS OR DOWNLOAD

SONGS?

This question, not only telling me that most people who listen to k-pop download music rather than
buy CDs, reinforces the fact that my demographic is exposed to media through the internet and
various technological devices. The bar chart below shows that The younger age groups spenf more
time on social media than any other group. Due to the rapid exposure of internet to the younger
generation, this shows that they would learn to rely on the internet more. This includes small
things like downloading music rather than buying a CD as downloading music is much easier ,
faster, cheaper and more accessible.

WHAT IS YOUR 2ND FAVOURITE

KPOP SONG AT THE MOMENT?

I chose to ask for the 2nd favourite song rather

that the first to receive more diverse answers.
This also enables me to pinpoint specific sub
genres and link them back to specific groups and
their respective groups

WOULD RATHER BE IN? ORDER IN

PREFERENCE
. This question is extremely genre specific. Based
on these results I can tell which groups and
genres are popular within K-pop.
To analyse this question accurately you need an
understanding of the companies. Yg, is one one of
the largest Kpop companies who's artists and
groups are heavily hip hop influenced. SM, one of
the fearsome 3 most famous companies has a
more pop and techno genred seen through its
artists. On the other hand, it also has a notorious
history of mistreating its artists. This has led to
many of the groups fans to dislike this company
despite loving the artists within it .Jyp is the last
of the trio which has a more generic, old-school
pop genre that can be seen from its artists. The
CEO is still active in producing his own music
and tracks for his artists gaining him well earned
respect .YG ranked first. This tells me that the
most popular sub genre in kpop in hip hop. This is
as the artists under that company are heavily
influenced by hip hop this is supported by my
answers from question 2 as many of the top 5
biases were members of groups that belonged to
this company or had a similar style. Due to my
excessive knowledge of this genre I unnecessarily
included 2 more companies that are not as well
known in this question. If I were to redo this
question, I would not include the last 2 companies
as they are not as well known as the trio. From
thiese results I can make a link to what types of
groups would like to be seen Since YG ranked
first, the model in magazine will have to wear chic
clothes. My three colour palette will also have to
consist of at least 1 darker colour to match YGs
hip hop theme.

QUESTION 8 ORDER THESE

GROUPS ACCORDING TO YOUR
PREFERENCE

I chose 4 of the most famous kpop girls groups that are all signed under different
companies be ordered.
My results support the previous question as the group who ranked first were a group
under YG entertainment called 2ne1. The next slide shows my results. Although the
2ne1 members were not as common in the bias lists ( shown in slide 4) the girls
generation members. This shows that some fans may have biases from girls
generation without actually liking the group as a whole. Assumedly, This may have
and been triggered by the numerous and varying members present in this group (8
beautiful females! Whereas 2ne1 have more focused 4 members) . In 2 nd place came
Sistar a group conveying sexiness and femininity without looking tacky and being
over sexualised. They are also one of the first famous girl groups to encourage
healthier plumper figures which used to be unwanted in South Korea. A attribute
greatly appreciated by us international fangirls. Unsurprisingly, although Hyuna
(slide 6) also conveys a sexy concept, I think her over sexuality and her groups
discouragement of being healthier and plumper has made her not as likeable to
international fangirls (but she's adored in South Korea). In third came Girls
generation who were my anticipated 1st due to their ever increasing popularity and
generic girly attire. In last place came Apink, the generic girly, cute girl group which
obviously were not appreciated by the participants. From these results I can tell how
my female will be represented on my magazine cover. Going along with the 1 st place
group, I will portray my model as a confident, powerful, seductive being rather than
the disliked innocent, pink girly image (Apink)

WHICH DO YOU PREFER, GIRL GROUPS

OR BOY GROUPS?
I asked this question to affirm any data that needed confirmation. This
question also helps mem target my demographics age group. Since boys boy
groups were the preferred this affirms that teen girls and young adult
women (13-25 years) would be my target age group.
