decimals.
Standard(s): 6.NS.3
Mastery/Thinking Objective:
-Students will be able to practice using the standard algorithm to perform addition,
subtraction, and multiplication of decimals.
-Students will understand how to calculate the tip and tax of a meal that they buy.
Outcomes/Assessment: Students will complete a worksheet to demonstrate mastery of
the lesson.
Activities/Strategies:

Preview/Do Now: 4 Do Now questions: one is a simple decimal times a whole number, another will
be a decimal times a decimal, and a third one will be a decimal (disguised as a whole number)
multiplied by a decimal (disguised as a whole number). Last problem is a word problem involving
multiplying decimals.
Direct Instruction/Modeling/Class Notes:
Key Instructional Strategies:
-Direct instruction on the answers to the Do Now
-Introduce the idea of paying extra for tax (introduce it as 6%, but then say that a percent sign
means we just turn it into a decimal by moving the decimal point two places to the left)
-Scaffold from paying for one item with tax, then up to 2 items with tax (requires adding, then
multiplying), and then finally to adding on tax AND tip.
-Put up a fake meal and have the students calculate the tax and tip of it.
Guided Practice & Independent Work:
Key Instructional Strategies:
-Introduce partner work.
-Students will create a meal and find the total price including tip and tax.
-Students will go around to each restaurant and create a meal, and find the total price, including
tip and tax.
Closure-Sharing/Debriefing/Assessment:
Key Strategies: If time permits, have 3 groups share their foods, their prices, and the total bill
after tax and tip.
Exit Ticket: If Mr. Qiao had a $15 gift card to Texas Roadhouse, how much money does he have
to pay now?

Materials:
-Menus from 5 restaurants printed out
