Friday, Aug. 21st: GSE Int'l Student Orientation
@ GSE 3700 Walnut Street 9am - 2pm

Bonnie and Kia began our position as Intercultural Fellows

for the GSE Student Affairs. We met up with Lois
MacNamara, our supervisor, and she has given us
permission to do whatever we wish. She is allowing us to be
as CREATIVE as we want. Her only request is for us to plan
the entire Fall Semester and start booking rooms.
Bonnie and Kia started planning the International Student
Brochure Booklet and will be working on it before
orientation arrives!
We have a long to-do list in ahead of us but its great that we
have the two of us. We continuously thank each other for
everything. And, we are also grateful for our experience at
SIIC for allowing us to get to know each other better and
know each others personality types. For example, Bonnie is
more of a night owl and Kia is more of a morning rooster.
Sharing one room required us to communicate our needs
with each other in order to be respectful of each others
habits and lifestyles.

International Student Resource Guide Brochure

-10 things all successful GSE student will do
One thing we want to add at the beginning of the brochure is to
include 2nd year intl students advices (via online survey &
focus group discussion)
Constantly read emails and respond them in 24 hrs
Attend GSE and Penn events
Stay up-to-date
Utilize all the services
Add quick list here, continue with the schedules for
WLC
Career Services
CAPS
ISSS
GIC
GAPSA
GSESG
-Check Penn GSEs Flicker and recreate a cover for the
brochure
-Add more programs promotion
Open House

SIETAR-USA(?)

Programming for the coming year

-Yangyang Kims W Curve theory
We will use the Yangyang Kims W Curve theory, which
we learnt from SIIC, to help us outline the programs we will
do in the coming year. The W Curve said, people will
have peaks and bottoms (Happy and Sad or Nerves)
alternately happen when coming to a new environment. So
we will break down the curve to our semester periods and
plan programs accordingly.
One thing we are thinking is, we should do more than
only planning different kinds of workshops/events. We
could actually do some constant support. Three things
we are thinking now are below:
-Weekly notes for intl students
We could sent beautiful and mindful notes (several sentences
or poem) to help increase their intercultural competence.
-A platform for resource share (Google drive)
*We want to create a google drive for all the students to
upload and share interesting books/movies, etc., with certain
rules, so they could touch base with each other and
communicate interculturally about those intercultural items.

3 hours
(6 hours)

-Add a list of upcoming GSE Events with the contact

information at back side
All the things above we want to make them nice and cutable, so
the students could cut the events calendar and save them for
further references.

*We want to create organic relationships, but not shallow

relationships. We want to do more community building for
both intl and domestic student. Give them a chance to know
each other and become informative and resourceful.
-Penn Community
Make best use of the penn community website to enhance
relationships.
ICC Advisory Board
We want to have the peer advisors to be in our board and
constantly give us advices, since they are the people who are
most familiar with the first year students.
Others
-Recommend students for current student panel (3-4 people)

Career Services
International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) Weingarten
Learning Resources Center (WLC)

Graduate School of Education Student Government (GSESG)

We are learning that we are such an effective team!!! We

owe a lot of this to our time at SIIC where we learned about
each others learning/leading styles. For example, Kia is a
Peacemaker so she is very adaptive to different types of
people and is able to camouflage to fit in. Bonnie is the
Reformer, so she brings a perfectionist attitude into our
work.

Our first day of orientation was GREAT! The room was too
tight for 60 people, but we improvised and it worked out.
3440 Market is too small of a space for us to host this many
international students.
The international students were so curious and kind, it
reminded us of our first year of graduate school, too. They
had so many questions to ask us, everything from where can
I get groceries to how can I start thinking about a Ph.D
degree. Great energy, great turn out.
We had the Philly Accent 101 fun workshop at the end. We
started it out the Charlie Chestnut knows I love you
stretch. Everyone laughed. Then we jumped into the
workshop where Abbey helped facilitate. It was such a great
hit this year!

evening on 10/31/2015 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM.
I'm waiting from them to get back to me.

4) VOLUNTEERS to Set Up
and Clean Up --- We still need more
volunteers!!!

5) I am mostly done with

Halloween Games and its preparations. We
should run through it together sometime.

6) I still need to finish the

Cultural Appropriation email to send out to
international students. Once I'm done drafting,
can I send it to you to proof-read and then
send it to everyone on the list serve?
BONNIE:

Yes, we can go through the

games, process and catch up the works we
haven't done yet tomorrow afternoon. Also, let
me know if I need to do anything to cofacilitate the games, if you'd prefer.

I would love to send out the

email for sure!

I am thinking of we should
start saving the date of the students about
Longwood garden trip. I will follow-up with
Nicole for the contact person and the process
to get it down.

I have asked Laronnda to help

send out the party invitation to everyone, but
didn't hear back yet. Would follow up later.
Probably I should send to Gulku instead?

I also have verbally advertised

the party to several int'l student groups, they
said they might want to come, but just haven't
registered yet. So I am expecting more
attendees. I sent the link to them respectively.

I also received a couple of

separate emails ask questions/updates. I
replied and Cc'd you every time.

Pumpkin Carving & Halloween Costume Party 2015

Pluses (+)

Deltas ()

(+) Total of ~70 people participated in both events (~50 Costume/~20

Pumpkin)
(+) Food, caterer, Bartender Alex were all great and came on time
(+) Decorations looked awesome, despite having very minimal decor
(+) Darryl the photographer was great
(+) Had enough people to help set up and clean up afterwards (Thank you
volunteers)
(+) Pumpkins looked great, supplies were plentiful
(+) Everyone seemed to have had a good time overall, received lots of
compliments and appreciation afterwards
(+) Glow sticks: awesome idea
(+) Basically: we were well prepared for both events in terms of
materials, food, drinks

() Venue (GSC) was expensive, unwelcoming, uncooperative, and changed things on

us last minute (i.e. room 305 reservation hours, their decorations, AV support)
--> We will never do an event at GSC again!
*too many rules, felt like we were babysat
i.e. catering & candle flame heating
i.e. limited # of people in back wall for AV/sound (untrusting of us using their space)c
() Didnt get the 100 ppl turn out, lots of leftover food, alcohol, candy (next time
anticipate this)
() Ran out of time to do costume contest
() Game Activities didnt get as many participation (maybe next time have more
adult activities)
() Video AV/sound system trouble (need to plan in advance next time)
() Have veg options

Kia has learned that a huge part of this position

enables her to utilize her skill set as a graphicdesigner.

2 hours

We are learning that this internship moves at

very fast pace. Event planning back to back
requires a lot of attention to details.

Tuesday, Nov
10, 2015

One thing we have learned from our Halloween

event is that need to advertise our events. Also,
if 50 ppl sign up, we have to consider there will
be a 50% melt.

Things we did today:

Started timesheet for our internship
OPT/CPT email reminder
Baking email reminder
Facebook Advertisement of our events
Ingredients for Kate Uhlrichs baking:
mix bowl
dozen of eggs

alcoholic bev.
Create Agenda for Thanksgiving
Prepare materials for activities
CONCUR -- GAPSA and SG refunds

We realize this week that we have a lot of things

to do before winter break, especially this week
with two back-to-back events (OPT/CPT &
baking). We have divided responsibilities
between us.

Things we did today:

Staff meeting 10-11 am
Shared the information from Penn Museum- Opportunity
for cultural education to all students
Got the thank you note cards for thanks

Our staff meetings are always a time to check in

and update what weve been up to. We enjoy
this time with Lois, Guerdi, and Imani because
we get to 1) remind ourselves of the
achievements we did the week before, and 2)
organize what needs to happen next. It holds us
accountable.

3 hours

We also need to work our Concur Student

Government and GAPSA funding, which is also
taking up a lot of our time. Today we
completed the GAPSA conference funding.

3 hours

We are also most productive after meetings

because we are both in the office.

Thursday, Nov

Things we did today:

OPT/CPT Workshop happened, 2-4 pm in GSE room

This event happened on the same day that the

#WeAreMizzou rally happened.

Bonnie was the only one who attended this

workshop because Kia was in class.
