Communications Systems Lab

1. Direct Broadcast Satellite
Direct Broadcast satellite (DBS) transmits TV signals to individual homes and business via satellite. The
satellite signal is received by a parabolic reflector and horn antenna, and then passes through LNB. The
resulting signal is transmitted through coaxial cable to the digital receiver which is connected to the TV.

Explain the different parts of the DBS system, use block diagrams whenever possible. This should cover
the following topics:

What are the frequency bands/ ranges used for uplink and downlink signals?
How do we select a specific satellite for reception?
What is the function of the LNB?
Digital TV modulation scheme (DVB-T).
The operation of the digital receiver.
How does the spectrum of the input to the digital receiver differ from that of the output of the
receiver?

2. ADSL
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) enables faster data transmission over copper telephone lines
than what modems did provide. This is achieved by utilizing frequencies higher than voice
communications range for data transmission.
