Ch. 2 summary and quotes - A Walk in the Woods
Bill Bryson starts reading all kinds of stories about bear attacks and as he learns more and more,
the more afraid he becomes. He begins by sending out invitations in Christmas cards, for
someone to travel with. An old friend, Stephen Katz agrees to go with him. As they shop and
pack for their trip, it looks more and more, like Katz may not the best candidate for Bills hiking
companion.
1. Now image reading a nonfiction book packed with stories such as this-true tales soberly
related-just before setting off alone on a camping trip of your own into the North American
wilderness. (p 20)
2. What on earth would I do if four bears came into my camp? Why I would die, of course.
Literally shit myself lifeless. I would blow my sphincter out my backside like one of those
unrolling paper streamers you get at childrens parties- I dare say it would even give a merry toot
and bleed to a messy death in my sleeping bag. (p 26-27)
3. Stephen, were going to be in the wilderness in 3 days. There wont be any doughnut stores.
He beamed proudly. I thought of that. He indicated his bag on the carousel- a green army
surplus duffel-and let me pick it up. It weighted at least seventy-five pounds. He saw my look of
wonder. Snickers, he explained. Lots and lots of Snickers. (p 32-33)
