Research Symposium Professional Development

On April 7, 2014 I attended the Undergraduate Research Symposium at Trevecca
Nazarene University. The symposium was held in McClurkan Hall in 6 different
classrooms. The first session I went to was about the Student Perception of Professors
use of Humor in the Classroom. This session talked about how much professors use
humor in the classroom and whether or not the students think their humor is funny or not.
The second session I went to was about the spirituality and well-being of college
students. The student talked in depth about how spirituality and a persons well-being
affect a student in college. The third session I went to was about student leadership. The
speaker talked about how reading the Bible and trusting in God can help you become a
great leader for the Lord. The fourth session I went to was about the Deaf community and
their faith in God. The speaker went to a Deaf church and communicated with them about
their faith in God. The last session I went to was about a small toy called a Kendama
and the many possibilities of ways to play with it.
I learned a lot from listening to the symposium. One session that I really liked was
the one about the Deaf community and their faith. I was happy to know that there are
people researching about how to help the Deaf community and further them in their walk
with God. One thing that I did not realize was that there is a huge need for Bibles for the
Deaf. The Deaf can not read an English Bible because their language is different than

ours. I find it very interesting that when a person teaches the Deaf people Bible stories,
they draw pictures to illustrate the story. The presentation was great and I learned a lot
from it.
I think that the symposium is a great way to show others about research that
current Trevecca students are doing. I learned a lot about being a servant of God and how
to further his kingdom. I hope that Trevecca continues to have Research Symposiums to
share with others about what is being studied on campus. I would love to go to another
Research Symposium.
