Activities/Procedure
1.
Ask students to raise their hand for words that describe a clock. Write them
on the board.
2. Show a clock on the smartboard. http://goo.gl/rlBO6y
3. Talk about the numbers on the clock and why there arent 24 numbers on
the clock.
4. Talk about the different hands on a clock; hour, minute, and second. Ask
students if they know what each of the hands represents.
5. Once students understand what each hand represents, discuss which hand
moves the slowest and fastest and why.
6. Explain to the class that they will have the chance to keep a beat like the
second hand. Demonstrate for the classroom with Lummi sticks and a
metronome.
7. Hand out the Lummi sticks and then set the metronome at 4/4 time for
students. Allow students to practice keeping beat with the metronome.
8. After a little practice, have the students begin together and count the beats
out loud until the number 60 like a clock would. Instruct students to then set
Lummi sticks down under their chair when completed.
9. Introduce The Clock Song. Read the lyrics first with the students. Then
sing through the song a few times together. http://goo.gl/tgZ39f
10. Once the song has been mastered, allow students to pick up their Lummi
sticks. Turn on the metronome in 4/4 time again. Allow students to get the
beat first. Then try and sing The Clock Song along with the beat.
11. Review the parts of a clock and what they represent for assessment.
