Scenario’ Sophia is a seventh grade student. At school, she has only a few, yet close, friends. Although Sophia does not shout out or interrupt adults when talking, she does appear to be withdrawn at times in class. If she is asked to participate in a group activity with students outside of her close friends, Sophia will not interact with them. If she is able to choose her group, she will choose to be with her friends, but even then she does not actively participate all of the time. ‘Academically, Sophia has an average IQ of 100. She has performed on level on standardized tests, and has an average reading level. As for her grades in class, those often suffer because she does not complete assignments. If Sophia is not interested in a particular assignment or assessment, she will not complete it. If she is presented with other options to complete the assignment or assessment, she does not seem interested. In speaking with her teachers from last year, it has become clear that this, withdrawn behavior began in the middle of the previous school year, making this behavior and low academic performance persistent for over a year now. In discussing how Sophia compares with her peers, it is noted that she seems to have very few _ coping skills and is more likely to shut down instead of persevere on tasks. —— At home, her mother has reported that her behavior seems to be recluse-Her mother reports that she asks her to go do things with her, or with her friends, but that Sophia does not seem interested. Her mother reported that she and Sophia's father went through a divorce about three years ago, but that Sophia seemed to handle it all very well. Being an only child, Sophia now spends most of her time with her mother or by herseff while at home. She refuses to go to her father's house, but will not give a real reason for doing so. In talking with Sophia's mother, it becomes clear that Sophia blames her father for her parents divorce.
