Student Teacher Name:

Sarah Koetz

Curricular Area: Mathematics

Date: 4/21/16
Lesson: 9-7

Length: 45-50 minutes

Instructional Objectives:
Students will use expand-and-trade subtraction to subtract multidigit numbers.

Standards:
CCSS.Math.Content.2.NBT.B.7: Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models
or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or
the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written
method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or
subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it
is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.

Preparation and Materials:

-base 10 blocks
-Math Journal page 234-235
-Math Masters page 266

Anticipatory Set:
-Math message: Make a ballpark estimate for 93-68=? Then solve using base-10
blocks.

Teacher Input:
-Students share their ballpark estimates. Introduce shorthand base-10 and have
students draw their answers from the math message on the SMART board.
-Explain that we are going to be using expanded form to work on subtraction today.
-Solve the problem 79-34 together following this formula:

79 is 70+9
34 is 30+4
Subtract 4 from 9 and 30 from 70 to get 40 + 5. This equals 45.

-Guide the students through a similar process with the problem 187-25.

-Practice this strategy using a problem that requires a trade. Walk through this using
a think aloud strategy.
-This is called expand and trade subtraction.
-Students practice this strategy on their Math Journals page 234-235. The students
may work with a partner to complete these questions.

Closure:
-Explain homework Math Masters page 266.

Assessment:
-Math Journals and volunteers during discussion. The students work on the SMART
board.
