DEFINITION AND CONCEPT OF PERSONALITY


From the word persona meaning mask in Latin.
Allport dynamic organization of psyhophysical systems of an
individual that determine his characteristic behavior and thought

2) Organization: personality is NOT merely the addition of traits
3) Psychophysical systems: attitudes, motives, habits
personality refers to our characteristic ways of responding to
individuals and situations. Personality refers to unique and
relatively stable qualities that characterize an individuals behaviour
across different situations over a period of time.
Personality is the unique way in which a person thinks, acts and feel
throughout the life
In brief, personality is characterised by the following features:
1. It has both physical and psychological components.
2. Its expression in terms of behaviour is fairly unique in a
given individual.
3. Its main features do not easily change with time.
4. It is dynamic in the sense that some of its features may
change due to internal or external situational demands. Thus,
personality is adaptive to situations.
