Visual Analysis of Abortion

The images shown above represent the right of a woman to have an abortion without
society criticizing ones decision. To convey a message through these pictures, I will apply the
three rhetorical elements known as pathos, ethos, and logos.
Purpose of the Images and its Message
The first image shows a women with a tape over her mouth representing the American
flag. The author probably put the flag as tape to indicate that women have no control of their own
bodies, because the government is making the decision for them. Then banners are wrapped
around the womens arms with crosses implying that religion plays a huge factor on the debate of
abortion. The second image contradicts the first image in a way because people are against
abortion, yet once the child is born they get upset when mothers ask the government for help.

On the left side her friends or family are saying to have the baby, that they will support her once
the child is born. On the right side once the child is born the picture is showing how the mother
of the child shouldnt ask for help from the government and how she should raise her child.
Audience Characteristics
These images are most likely for one people who agree that women should have the legal
right to terminate her pregnancy. The second reason could also be for women who want to
terminate her pregnancy and are making a statement. The third possibility can be for the parents
of the child making a decision based on their opinions and not society.
Pathos
These images can impact many if anyone has ever felt they couldnt do something
wanted or couldnt do because they were forced to do the opposite. It can also show how harshly
society judges mothers on how to raise their new born baby. They expect for these mothers to not
ask for any help but expect the mother to be forced to have a child knowing the life this new born
child could possibly have. If people could think of the future a child might have if their parents
were to come to termination they would know that deep down this isnt what they want, but a
decision that sadly everyone could understand.
Ethos
The most important question is has anyone ever bothered to ask the mother how she felt
after having an abortion. Most people tend to think that women are just terminating their babies
for no good reason. However what they dont know is the real reason behind the mothers
decision.

Logos
In 1973, abortion became legal in most of the states. The rest have made abortion illegal
due to the government forcing women to have a pregnancy they do not want for reasons we do
not know. These images show that no matter what the mother decides to do whether to keep the
child or terminate, society always has something to say. If a mother decides to abort its
inhumane, if the mother raises the child on her own they are judged for asking for any help.
Strategy
These pictures are shown to let universe know that women do not have the right to decide
what happens with their body. This topic contradicts the 14th amendment considering that the 14th
amendment was specifically made for womens rights. The prochoice of having an abortion is
under this movement, yet the government doesnt allow women to terminate their pregnancies.
The strategy is to prevent women from getting pregnant with birth control, condoms, and before
the baby is even born or developed for women to take a plan b. we as people have always looked
at the negative and positive aspects of life, and that is exactly what people should be doing now
with the debate of abortion. This debate is not only to protect the child but also the mother and
the affects it can cause a women to go through whether it is physically or emotionally.
