BASIC UNIT INFORMATION LRG9-DP industrial gas compressor Is unique among compressors in capacity and flaxibitty. Unike ordinary lubricated compressors, LRG9-DP provides oll free gas compression as the crosshead piston desgn has two oll control rings. The oll contot rings help keep the oil in the crankcase. In ‘uidition, the distance piece isolates the crankcase from the compression chamber providing a true oil free compressor, There are two differently rated packing cases aveilable one for vacuum to 100 psig ‘and 50 to 1500 psig working pressure. Each cylinder head is equipped with a suction and one discharge valve. Valves are designed for severe duly service in gas applications. Suction and discharge valves use MTX (STD) or HTX (PEEK) plates with 440 stainless steel cages and springs. Suction unloading valves are optional. ‘Algo, the valve heads have @ choice of two inlet ports, The heads can be rotated! in 90° increments. ‘The discharge port has two tapped holes one on each side of the port so a pressure gage and temperature gauge can be installed How the LRG9-DP Works. If compressing a toxe or flammable gas, LeRO! recommends that the units be placed out doors. If such units are placed indoors, make sure the area is woll ventilated and proper procedures are followed to vent distance piece. PIPING ‘Add pipe supports where ever necessary, do not rely on the compressor supporting the pipe. Unsupported piping Is the most frequent cause of pipe vibration. Piping must be installed on a slight angle down away from the compressor keeping condensation from draining back Inco the compressor. ‘This is especially important on applications where gas is being handled at or near its saturation point. DRIVER INSTALLATION / FLYWHEEL Tho LRGO.DP may be driven elther by electric motors or combustion engine (choice of gasoline, dlissel, natural gas, etc). The LRGS-DP is V-belt driven. ‘Select drivers so thatthe compressor operates between 560 to 1200 RPM. Do not operate the unit without ‘@ flywheel, severe torsional imbalances will result that could cause vibration and high horsepower requirement. The flywheel should never be replaced by another pulley unless it has a higher wi2. value than the flywheel. CRANKCASE LUBRICATION Prior to intial operation, fil the crankcase with single viscosity, non-detergent super refined oil with rust and oxidation inhibilors, Oil should be either a naphthenic base or a specially compounded type to minimize carbon formation and to produce carbon residue of a sof, flufy nature, Detergent oils tend to keep wear particles and debris suspended in the ol, whereas non-detergent oils lot them settle to the bottom of the crankcase. Use oll as indicated below: |LeRO! recommends oil lubricant SAE 40 weight Citgo Pacemaker Gas Engine Oil 1740 with superior low ‘ash, low phosphorus gas engine oils wit a ‘state-of-the-art’ balanced advanced addlve package to mest ‘API'CD quelily performance of cleanliness and excellent wear protection with a low ash formula that ‘complies with our manufacturers! warranty B ‘CAUTION DO NOT USE DETERGENT OILS IN LRGS-DP models. NOTE FOR COLD WEATHER OPERATION, THE LUBRICATING OIL. SHOULD HAVE A POUR POINT OF AT LEAST 20°F LOWER THAN THE LOWEST EXPECTED OPERATING TEMPERATURE. AN OPTION IS TO INSTALL AN Oll. HEATER TO THE CRANKCASE. OIL FILTER FOR 3SHP LRG9-DP & SSHP LRG9-DP MODELS Style: Non-Bypass —Spin-On Lube Filer LeRO! P/N 43-1155 OIL FILL LEVEL On single cylinder models with %' diameter sight glass, fil the ol to top of sight glass. On al other models with 1-3/8" diameter sight glass, fil the ofl approximately 1/16" above the center red dot. Do not exceed recommended oi fil level 2s this may induce vibration, OIL FLOW When the comp'essor starts, the vane type oil pump draws oil from the crankcase and pumps it through @ spin on oll fiter then through drilled passages in the crankshaft. Excess oll pressure forces the oil relief valve to open passing oil back to the crankcase, Connecting rod crankshaft bearings are pressure lubricated. Crankshaft roller bearings, crosshead cylinder walls, needle roller bearings end pistons are spray lubricated by oil throw off from the crankshaft and pressure relief valve. Also available is an optional low oil pressure alarm or shutdown switch. An optional crankcase oil heater is available for cold environments. CAUTION THE LRG9-DP MODEL REQUIRES THE OIL PUMP TO BE REVERSED FOR REVERSE ROTATION (SEE THE SERVICE SECTION OF THIS MANUAL OIL. PUWIP REVERSING SHUTDOWN) ALARM DEVICES ‘The Importance of installing shutdownvalarm switches will provide protection that may otherwise result in serious damage to your compressor. Make sure that all electrical devices meet local code requirements. Below is some common used shuldown/alarm switches used on reciprocating compressors! Low Oil Pressure Safety: in the event where the oll pressure falls below 20 psi due to worn vanes, broken springs in the cil pump, low oil or plugged fier the unit shuts down, High Temperature Safety: in the event where the discharge temperature exceeds the normal discharge temperature, the unit shuts down, Typical set point is about 30° F (17° C) above the normal discharge temperature. The normal discharge temperature is defined by what the valve sealing element material is in your valve. Check with the valve manufacturer for the rated operating discharge temperature. Low Suction, High Discharge Pressure: in the event where the inlet or outlet pressures are not within preset limits, the unit shuts down, Vibration Safety: in the evant where vibration becomes excessive, the unit shuts down. Vibration switch is recommended for units mounted on portable skids, 4 CRANKCASE BREATHER TUBE “The breather tube for the crankcase has stainless steel wool packing. The steel wool is a medium grade 2 measuring approximately 12 inches in length and is placed in the 2" breather tube near the crankcase connection to capture any oil particles that may be trapped in the air coming out of the crankcase. A breather cap wit filter is altached to the top ofthis tube to safely vent out to atmosphere. The breather cap needs to be changed every 8 months or more often in dusty areas. See routine maintenance for more details VENTING DISTANCE PIECE On LRGS-DP the distance piece has two vents requiring venting. Proper connections ore essential for maintaining the compressors performance. The distance piece has both tapped holes plugged when Shipped to the packager. One option is to plumb the distance piece vent to a location wih lass than 15 psig backpressure. All three distance pieces can be routed {0 the same location and can be tubod in Series. The top vent isthe packing case vent; the bottom vent is @ breather vent for the distance piece, See Figure 5. ‘An option is available to purchase a sencor that detects when the packing case requires changing. To install the sensor, the botom vent on the distance piece is tubed to the sensor, after the sensor connect bottom vent from the distance piece to the tube is routed to the location with less than 15 psig backpressure. ‘TOP VENT FOR PACKING CASE 1/8NPT. Vent toa location with less than 15 psig backpressure, IF this low pressure is not available, vent to atmosphere. BOTTOM VENT I-1/4"NPT. Breather for distance piece add ‘muffler und vent to atmosphere. FIGURE 5 VENTS ON DISTANCE PIECE In lustration below, the distance piece is tubed in series and the tube is tied into the inlet pipe which hes 15 psig or less backpressure. If the distance piece packing case begins to wear causing leak pressure greater than 15 psig, the gas will low into the inet pipe. ILLUSTRATION 1 DISTANCE PIECE VENTING RELIEF VALVES Relief valves are a must and need to be installed on any line leading to or from the compressor thal is restricted by a valve or other device. In case of a malfunctioning valve or check valve, the relief valve should be able to relieve a volume of gas that is higher than the piston displacement of the compressor. The relief valve material should be compatible with the gas being compressed. If the compressor is enclosed and toxic or flammable gases are handled, be sure the relief valve is piped to an area where itis safe to release the gas. HIGHLY CORROSIVE GASES If the compressor is to be shutdown after servicing a highly corrosive gas, the compressor shall be taken off line with the cylinders and head purged with a dry inert gas to remove any possibility of corrosion taking effect. Since the oylinders and heads are oil free, extra precaution is essential and will reduce the chances for corrosion damage to the compressor. 1 Is also a good idea to purge the distance piece the same way as the cylinders after servicing a highly corrosive gas. SECTION IV START UP INSPECTION AFTER EXTENED STORAGE, It will be important to inspect your compressor after being out of service for a fong time. Inspect the cylinder bores and valve heads for rust or debris (see the maintenance section of this manual for valve ancl ‘ylinclar removel instructions). Drain the old ol from the crankcase, Inspect the crankshaft, connecting rods, and bearings for signs of rust and clean or replace parts 2s necessary. Fill the crankcase with ftesh oil (see the installation section Of this manual for crankcase lubrication). Rotate the crank by hand to ensure that all bearing surfaces ere coated with o. NOTE THE CRANKCASE IS FULL WHEN THE Oll. LEVEL IS TO THE TOP OF THE THREADS OF THE FILLER HOLE OR APPEARS MIDDLE ON THE SIGHT GLASS. Continue to rotate the crank manually to engure the unit turns freely. Proceed with start-up process, FLYWHEEL INSTALLATION First be sure the power is disconnected before servicing. The 35HP flywheel is mountec on the tapered tend of the crankshaft with key, a washer and bolt secures the flywheel in place. The SSHP flywheel Is mounted on the straight crankshaft with a tapper bushing and three botts. CAUTION WHEN PERFORMING ANY SERVICE DISCONNECT ELECTRICAL POWER BEFORE SERVICING. INITIAL START UP 4Jog the compressor by momentarily starting and stopping the unit to check compressor rotation, Rotation is cortect when the flywheel turns counter-clockwise while facing the front ofthe flywheel. If the rotation is not correct, correct the rotation by reversing the motor or change the oil pump direction. ee Oil Pump-Reversing Rotation section below. NOTE THE COMPRESSOR CAN BE OPERATED WITH "REVERSE ROTATION" THE OIL PUMP DIRECTION OF ROTATION CAN BE CHANGED (SEE OI. PUMP-REVERSING ROTATION). STARTING Observe the unit for proper operation (no excessive noise or vibration; oil pressure gage begins to show pressure, etc) Proper operating oil pressure is between 30 to 80 psi. Oil pressure may vary slightly with speed of the compressor. If no oll pressure is shown on the gauge, check the rotation of the flywheel. The standard rotation is counter-clockwise while facing the front view of the flywheel. If the unit must rotate clockwise, the vane pump must be reversed, see section on oll pump reversing rotation in the service end repair maintenance section of this manual. ” If observations ere salisfactory, the unit may continue in operation. Use the Procedure Star-Up Check List to-ensure everything is operating correctly. See Procedure Start-Up on pages 15 and 16. STOPPING Remove input power and allow compressor to stop freely. PROCEDURE START-UP CHECK LIST “The two proceeding pages are check sheets please verify all ofthe items on this list before starting your ‘compressor! Section 15 00-02-0674 2014-08-27 5. Installation and Adjustment for Pneumatic Models 1. Allpneumatic models operate on the vent i RECOMMENDED principle. The pneumatic signal source must _A. FilledPaguator be clean, dry instrument-qualit or Tarik natural gas. The input pneumatic signal Paar seein must be regulated between 30 and 70 psi Z' Signal» (207-483 kPa) [2 -4.83 bar], If produced yas is. ———— 4 used as the signal source, it should be taken after gas passes through the final scrubber. A wunPuvenses suitable filter must be positioned before the LS200NDVO to prevent liquids and/or particulates rom entering the dump valve operator. NOTE: Check filter periodically for wear and tear and elements that hamper the flow of the pneumatic signal. 2, Allpressure connections must be tight and maintained tight so as not to leak air/gas. CAUTION: Avold excessive Teflon tape which may inhibit proper operation. Each switch is set to vent on rising level at the factory and should net need field adjustment. For testing the system, we have provided the red Manual Valve Operator on the operator pilot valve. 3. Valve seat adjustment can be made if air/gas begins to leak. Care should be taken when adjusting as only slight movement is necessary to stop the leakage; excessive force will bind the seating mechanism. See the instruction below for adjustment. ADJUSTABLE ORIFICE Turn left until alr leakage stops. CAUTION: Only slight adjustment _’ (W2tun is needed) excessive adjustment will lockup mechanism. ‘AMter adjusting, make sure float moves without obstruction. “AIP CAN Section 15 (00-02-0671 2014-08-27 Replacing and Installing the DVO Assembly | NOTE: When replacing/installing the DVO assembly, tubing and fitting modifications may be required.
