(1) Measure and Compare
(2) 1st Grade
(3) This lesson is intended for the entire class.
(4) Math
(5) Standard: 1.MD.1 - Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects
indirectly by using a third object.
(6) Objective:

I know length is the measurement of how long an object is from one point to
another.
I can explain what I mean by taller, shorter, longer, higher, bigger, or smaller.
I can indirectly measure objects by comparing the length of two objects by
using a third object as a measuring tool.
I can determine which of two objects is longer, by physically aligning the
objects.
I can order objects by length, from longest to shortest or shortest to longest

(7) Materials needed to facilitate the lesson?

Crayon
Pencil
Desk Top
Printed worksheet
Scissors

(8) Procedures:

Start by asking a small student (a) to come to the front of the class.

Measure the students height against the teachers height. Who is taller?
Would the teacher be considered bigger than the student? Would the student
be referred to as smaller than the teacher?
Bring up a taller student (b) to the front.
Compare this student against the other student and the teacher.
Ask the question: If the teacher is the taller than student (b) and student (b)
is taller than student (a), does then does that mean the teacher is taller than
student (a)? Why?
Have each student take out a crayon and a pencil. Which is bigger? Is the
crayon bigger than the desk top? Is the pencil bigger than the desk top?
Arrange the crayon, pencil and desk top in order from smallest to largest.
What about largest to smallest?
Give out the worksheet and have the students fill in the answers. They can
color the objects if they get done early.

(9) Assessment will be based on the answers on the worksheet. Students should have an
understanding of how large (or small) an object is in comparison to another object. The
worksheet will present different measurement scenarios.
