Aung Sang Suu Kyi

Aung Sang Suu Kyi was born on 19th June 1945. She is
opposition leader in and from Yangon, Myanmar
won the Noble Peace Prize due to her
commitment and perseverance on defending her

an
and
ideas.

Suu Kyi has two older brothers and her father, who
was
assassinated two years after she was born, was the
primeminister of British Burma. As for her mother, she
was an
ambassador to India in 1960. Suu Kyi got a
bachelors degree in philosophy, politics and
economics at the University of Oxford. Over there, she met the man who
would become her future husband, Michael Harris. They got married in
1972, and had two kids, Alexander and Kim.
Sixteen years after getting married, Aung Sang Suu Kyi returned to Burma to
take care of her dying mother. During her absence, Burma was taken by the
military, and was in their hands, because U Ne Win, a dictator, resigned his
post as party chairman. However, he still orchestrated various violent
responses to the continuing protests.
Noticing her countrys political situation, and believing that democracy
should be installed, also human rights must be respected, she started to
speak out against U Ne Win. In July 1989 the military government arrested
her because of her struggle, giving her the opportunity to leave the country,
which she refused.
While she was house arrested,
she managed to be a part of
the
National
League
for
Democracy, which, in 1990,
won eighty percent of the
parliamentary seats. However,
these results were ignored by
the military.
Aung Sang Suu Kyi won the
Noble Peace Prize in 1991 for
her non-violent struggle for
democracy and human rights.
As she was arrested at home, the prize was accepted by her husband and
sons. She also received other awards, such as: the Rafto Prize (1990); the
Sakharov Prize (1990); the Jawaharlal Nehru Award (1992); the International
Simn Bolvar Prize (1992); the Olof Palme Prize (2005); the Wallenberg
Medal (2011); the Congressional Gold Medal (2012) and the Presidential
Medal of Freedom (2012). She was also the honorary member of The

Elders, a group of well-known global leaders brought together by Nelson

Mandela.
After many obstacles like being house arrested for twelve years, being
charged and convicted Suu Kyi finally took office in 2012.
In my opinion, Aung Sang Suu Kyi is a role model to everyone, owing to her
courage in defending her ideals of human rights and democracy and her
perseverance on pursuing these principles. What an amazing woman!
