TEST CODE 2492 FORM TP 8608 JUNE 1986 CARIBBEAN EXAMINATIONS COUNCIL SECONDARY EDUCATION CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION PHYSICS. Paper 2 General Proficiency 1 hours READ THE FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY 1. You MUST use this answer bookiet when responding to the questions. For each question, write your ‘answer in the space provided and return the answer booklet at the end of the examination. 2. ALL WORKING MUST BE SHOWN in this booklet, since marks will be awarded for correct steps in calculations. 3. Attempt ALL questions. 4, Mathematical tables are provided. 5, __| Specific latent heat of steam = 2.3% 10° Jkg Specific heat capacity of steel = 500 J kg" K~" DO NOT TURN THIS PAGE UNTIL YOU ARE TOLD TO DO So Copyright © 1986 Caribbean Examinations Counc All rights reserved, 2492/F 86 [a) A microwave transmitter, T, is placed near a biconvex object, L, which is transparent to micro: waves. The strongest signal is received when a detector, D, is placed as shown in the diagram below. The focal length is represented by 5 units of length (See grid below. 1 Unit of length Complete and label the diagram clearly to show (i) the principal axis (ii) the approximate position of ONE of the px (iii) the corresponding focal length (iv) the corresponding focal plane. (4 marks) (b) Assume that the transmitter is now placed off the axis a very large distance away from L. Draw, fon the grid below, THREE rays from the transmitter ta show where D should now be placed to detect the strongest signal from T. (6 marks) GO ON TO THE NEXT PAGE \92/F 86 The diagram above shows a ray of light, PQ, passing normally across the face, AB, of a 90° - 60° - 30” alass prism. On this diagram: () Sketch the path of the ray emerging into the air at R. Label this ray ‘Ray 1” (2 marks) (i) Show where the eye could be placed to view the image of a pin placed at P. (1 mark) It fs possible for some of the light travelling along QR to be reflected at Rand then emerge from the prism, (il) Sketch, on the same diagram, the path of such 9 ray, Label this ‘Ray 2", (4 marks) (iv) Explain whether the image produced by rays such as "Ray 1’ above is real (3 marks) Total 20 marks GO ON TO THE NEXT PAGE 2492/F 86 4 2, In sharpening a cutting tool on a grindstone, sparks are often seen flying in many directions from the stone. These sparks are hot, tiny particles of steel from the toot being sharpened. The particles cool and stop glowing in a very short time (a) Name the main process by which the sparks cool. Justify your answer (3 marks) {b}__ The mass of one such tiny particle is 1.0 x 10 kg. If it cools through 800K in 0.2 second, ealeulate its rate of loss of heat energy. (7 marks) (€) Estimate how many such particles will have to coo! in order that the total heat released may change 1 g of water, at its boiling point, completely to steam, (10 marks) Total 20 marks GO ON TO THE NEXT PAGE 2492/F 86 3. (a) The table below gives information on some household equipment which might be plugged into the various main supplies available in the Caribbean. Fill in the four blanks in the table, assuming that the resistance of the equipment remains constant. Equipment and information Current which equipment will draw 0 110.V mains | on 220 V mains Iron marked 1.1 KW, 110. Lamp marked 40 W, 220 V (4 marks) {b) In (a) above, you were asked to assume that the resistance of the iron and lamp remained ‘constant. Discuss whether or not this isa reasonable assumption, ( 2 marks) (6) Consider again the equipment described in the first column of (a) above. State, giving reasons, what is most likely to be the effect on the equipment in EACH of the following cases (tron plugged into 220 V mains (ii) Lamp plugged into 110 V mains (4 marks) GO ON TO THE NEXT PAGE 2092/F 86 (4) Some kinds of household equipment which draw large currents (for example, water heaters and washing machines) must be used on a special circuit. Give TWO special features of such a Circuit, and explain why they are necessary. (4 marks) fe] State SIX steps you would take to conserve energy in the home. Your answer should refer to AT LEAST THREE of the following: Lamps, stoves, refrigerators/treezers, air conditioners, irons, water heaters. (6 marks) Total 20 marks GO ON TO THE NEXT PAGE 2492/F 86 ‘A mechanic uses the spanner shown in the diagram above to turn a bolt, B, into a threaded nut. The force, P, used to do this is applied in @ HORIZONTAL plane and perpendicular to the length of the spanner (a) Sketch a simple, labelled diagram showing the forces acting in a horizontal plane on the spanner 25 it begins to turn the bolt. (5 marks) (b} If an effort of 80 Nis applied 15.0 em from the axis of the bolt, calculate the moment of the forces opposing the effort as the spanner just begins to turn. (3 marks) (0) (i) Name the principle used in obtaining your result in (b) above. GO ON TO THE NEXT PAGE 2402/F 86 (ii) State this principle (4 marks) (4) Explain why, if the mechanic uses a longer spanner, the effort needed will be smaller, but the energy he expends in turning the spanner through one revolution will be the same. (4 marks) (e} Suppose the same spanner were used in a vertical rather than a horizontal plane, describe, with a labelled diagram, how you would measure the effort that would now be needed just to turn the bolt, (2 marks) GO ON TO THE NEXT PAGE 2492/F 86 (8) Would you expect the value of the effort in (e) on page 8 to be greater or less than that used in (a) on page 72 Give a reason for your answer, ( 2 marks) ‘Total 20 marks 5.
