awayfromwrongfulordangerousactions.Oftentimesthisiseasierforsocietytotakeinthana
warningbecausesocietydoesntfeelattackedorcriticizedwhenenjoyingit.Fromancientmyths
tomoderntelevision,thereareexampleseverywhere.MichaelCrichtons
JurassicPark
isa
greatexampleofabookwarningsociety.Throughoutthebook,CrichtonusestheJohn
HammondslackofpatienceandIanMalcolmsfrustrationswithhimandotherscientiststo
conveyhisviewsandwarningstoscience,whichisthatscientistsarentthinkingahead.Healso
usesMalcolmtoofferthesolutionofthinkingaheadandslowingdown.
MichaelCrichtonconveysthroughIanMalcolmhisproblemsandfrustrationswith
modernscience,thatscientistsaremovingtoofastanddontconsidertheconsiquences.Ian
Malcolmoncestatedthiswhentalkingabouttheillactsofscientists:Theyneveraskifthey
should
tosomething(Crichton318).Malcolmlaterlabelsthesescientistsasthintelligent.
HereMalcolmclaimsthatdespitemorals,ethics,orsafety(reasonswhysomethingshouldntbe

usuallyindicateswrongdoingontheothersbehalf,itmakesonethinkthatthroughhimCrichton

explainsthatSinceitwassoexitingandsinceitwaspossibletodoit,wedecidedtogo
forward(Crichton342).HereCrichtonusesHammonddirectlytoprovehisfeelingstowards
science,asHammondmatchesthethintelligenttraitsMalcolmspeaksof.Eventually,because
Hammonddidnotconsiderifheshould,theparkturnedouttobeacompletedisasterandmany
peopleperished.HealsomakestheclaimthroughHammondthatscientists,insteadoffocusing

CrichtonnotonlyusesMalcolmtoexpresshisfrustrationsbutuseshimtoprovidea
solutiontotheproblem,whichistogetridofthosewhorefusetothinkaheadandtoslowdown.

Malcolmresponds,Getridofthethintelligentones,takethemoutofpower(Crichton319).
BecauseMalcolmisexplainingthissolutiontoEllie,itleadsonetobelieveCrichtonisusing
Malcolmtotellushissolution,whichistosimplytakethosewhodontthinkaheadandwont

society,forsciencetoslowdowninitseffortsandtobemorecareful.
