LEARNING IN YOUR CURRENT AND
FUTURE NURSING PRACTICE

B-2-1Demonstrate ability to apply critical

thinking and clinical judgment in the planning
of care.
In lab learning about Gastrointestinal Tube
placement was a learning experience. I had to
use my current nursing knowledge on G-tubes
but also use critical thinking in deciding how
to check for proper placement. In one scenario
I was asked how I would check for placement.
I knew the most accurate way was an x-ray,
but an x-ray was not available. In planning
care for the client I had to aspirate some of the
stomach contents and test for pH, something I
was not familiar with.
I learned that I will not always know the
answer. Sometimes my own knowledge and
ability to critically think will not result in the
required answer or action in the planning of
care for a client. It was meaningful because it
is something I would have had to learn at
some point in my nursing career.
Good: understands competency in theory and
in scenarios and nursing practice.
I have a strong knowledge base and
understanding but have not been provided
with many opportunities to plan client care or
activate critical thinking/judgment skills. It is
a competency that has not yet become
seamless/automatic in my nursing practice.
In the future, if my current knowledge or
critical thinking skills are not sufficient I will
take further actions such as asking for an
inservice, clarifying with a co-worker or
preceptor, and performing further research to
have the knowledge for the next time.
