Exercise on Modal Analysis

Ansys
The figure shows a component which is used in switchgears to transmit an impulse
load. The component is allowed to rotate during the operation through a pin in 20mm
diameter hole.
Build the component in Solidworks using the dimensions given and then use ANSYS
to find four natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes.
Comment on duration of the pulse transmitted in relation to these frequencies.
Suggest the appropriate modification to raise the fundamental frequency.
Assume Structural Steel for the material.

Step 1: Start Workbench


Start All Programs Mechanical & Construction Engineering Ansys 15.0
Workbench 15.0 Drag Modal and drop

Step 2: Import Geometry


i) Double Click Geometry Click Units Select Millimeter

ii) Click File Import External Geometry File Select Part1.sat Click Open
iii) Right click Import Click Generate Close DesignModeler
iv) Save project.

Step 3: Mesh

i) Double click Model Click Units Select Metric (mm, )


ii) Right click Mesh Insert Sizing
iii) Select Body
Select Component Click Apply Input 5 mm in
Element Size Right click Mesh Click Generate Mesh

Step 4: Apply Boundary Condition


i) Right click Modal Insert Displacement

ii) Select inner area of top left hole Click Apply Set X Component: 0.mm

iii) Click Analysis Settings Select the Max Modes to Find Increase to the
number that you are interested in, for example 10.

Step 5: Solve
i) Right click Solution Click Solve

ii) Right click Solution Insert Deformation Total Repeat this for 10 modes

iii) Under the Solution, select each Total Deformation and adjust the Mode number.

iv) Right click Solution Click Evaluate All Results

Step 6: Post process


i) Result can be animated by clicking the triangle under the Graph window.

ii) Video can be exported by click


iii) Report review and project save.

under the Graph window.
