Introduction: in this reflection I discuss my second mini-lesson. This mini-lesson was unlike the
first mini-lesson, an individual effort. In this lesson I tried to be more specific and goal oriented
in the rationale and more explicit and clear in my assessment. This focus is a direct reflection of
the feedback I received on my first mini-lesson. I tried in this mini-lesson to combine a more
focused rationale with a succinct presentation. The constructive criticism from my peers and my
own thoughts concerning the mini-lesson are also discussed in this reflection.

2nd Mini Lesson Reflection
I did my second mini lesson on using pathos in argumentative writing. I created a ten
slide prezi presentation and a corresponding handout. After the lesson I had my students write a
short argumentative paragraph which used pathos to defend the religious rights of a satirical
religion. In the presentation and in the handout I explicitly stated what pathos was, provided
examples, and described three of the most common ways to use it in argumentative writing. This
emphasis on clearly stating the lesson goals and how to achieve them was the result of the
feedback I received on my first mini-lesson. I also emphasized several potential mistakes that are
commonly made when using pathos and how to avoid them i.e. a lack of relevancy between the
pathos and the claim being argued that the pathos is attempting to support. Overall I think the
lesson went well but there was room for improvement. I think I laid out the information well in

the class handout but crammed to much into the prezi. Several students, in their reviews,
commented that I had too much information on the slides and that I simply read verbatim from
them. I think this problem would have been solved if I had simplified the prezi and emphasized
the class handout more. The prezi, besides being criticized for the amount information, received
praise for its appearance. One student wrote in their review maybe rely on prezi less and then
when asked about my use of technology they wrote sweet prezi. I think I spent to much time
reading the slides instead of interacting with the class as I taught. I payed special attention to
making sure the examples and information in the handout and prezi were relevant to
argumentative writing and the common core standard I was focusing on. All in all I thought the
lesson was concise and effective. I think a better prezi and a bit more class time could off made
my okay lesson a great one.
