The University of Rochester provides students the opportunity to build their own curriculum based
on their own unique strengths and interests. Aligned with this philosophy, we wish to provide
applicants the ability to build their individual supplemental response. Please select one the
following methods that best illustrates your interest in attending the University of Rochester and
will best highlight your individual talents and interests.
1. Answer Essay Question: February 2015 saw global, record-breaking low temperatures in the
Eastern US and Rochester. Students here who thrive in white winters (and three beautiful other
seasons) wonder how can you make Rochester ''ever-cooler''? (Max 250 words)
I am passionate about engineering and this interest mainly came from the Biotech internship I participated
during one of my summer vacations. It is a company that uses eco-friendly planting and food growing
system that benefits the future environment. I am surprised on how engineering can contribute to the
world so much and I hope my passion in engineering can lead to an even better Rochester. As an
international student, I am from Taiwan, a country that was settled by several countries in history. This
distinct history created diverse cultures for us and shapes our way of thinking in all directions. One of my
interests is to share those with my surroundings. I hope to bring my cultures to Rochester University
because while sharing them, I can also listen to others. Cultures shape our mindsets (ways of thinking),
so I think it can make Rochester better and broaden people horizons if the community can share each
others cultures and think differently. If I had a chance, I would like to make Rochester even better by
creating a club that accepts people from all over the world. People would share their views or culture with
others. Every time we would have a different topic to talk about. I have many more interests that I think
that could make Rochester a better place, and as it grows I would share it with others because I believe in
collaboration. I believe the community can work better with people sharing their knowledge and ideas
with others rather than with people compete with others all the time.
