1 Corinthians 13:4-7 says, 4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does
not boast, it is not proud. 5It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not
easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices
with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
We learned earlier that attitude is composed of three components: the cognitive,
the affective, and the behavioral. Anger, fear, disgust, sadness, joy, and love are some
of the emotions that pertain to the affective component of attitude.
Judge and Robbins define emotions as the intense feelings that are directed at
someone or something. We cannot control them. They are just our reactions to external
stimuli. However, these emotions can cause us to act in accordance to what we feel.
And, for pre-teens in turmoil like Riley, their emotions control their actions.
On the other hand, virtues, such as patience, kindness and humility, are the
internal calling of our moral consciousness. They are what make up our personality and
integrate emotions, knowledge, and will. They are not passive like emotions are; we
actively pursue them and live by them. Virtues unify knowing what to do and doing
what ought to be done.
Knowing these meanings of emotions and virtues, I would say that the most
important for leadership and management are virtues. In leadership and management,
you have to be mostly objective in your decisions; however, you still have to be
somehow subjective to consider the situations of employees working under you. You
can accomplish this by having virtues.
To be able to lead someone to be what you want them to be, you will first have to
exemplify these characteristics. You cannot let emotions take over because you will
have to be somehow objective to be a good manager. Moreover, as stated earlier,
virtues encompass emotions, so virtues will never be without emotions, especially of the
emotion love.
During our activity in class, I was made to choose between affection and integrity.
I guess this essay makes me rethink of my decision because, according to 1
Corinthians 13:4-7, love also includes integrity.
