Fascism Reflection
Fascism was gaining a lot of supporters and was adopted by a couple countries in the
1920s and 1930s. It would probably have more support today if it was not for the negative
connotation of fascism that came about due to Hitler. We learned about this and a few other
things but this time without the use of a book.
The fascism lesson was different than the other sections because we did not have a book
to read. I found it easier to understand than the previous isms due to the way it was taught. The
books are often monotonous or hard to understand. The way the information was presented in
class seemed to be easy to understand but maybe this subject matter was just easier to understand
than the others.
The notes we took talked a little about Mussolini and what he was trying to do but mostly
about what Hitler did after him. I feel that in class discussion we got too much into Hitler and the
terrible things that happened while he was in power and not enough about fascism itself.
Obviously it has something to do with fascism due to ultranationalism and the genocide that
came about due to this. However, I think that I missed out on more information about fascism
itself due to this. With that being said the discussions about Germany and Hitler were good ones
and I feel that I learned a little from them.
This may have been the first ism we covered in which I believe I got more out of the
material than I did from class discussion. Whether it is how the topic was presented or the
subject at hand I am not sure. In the end it seemed to be a worthwhile unit and I have a better
understanding of the meaning of fascism, even if the definition is hard to pin down.
