I have known Eila for 7 years, as her coach and employer. She was a 3-year varsity letter athlete on Skyline High School's crew team in Ann Arbor, MI, competing at a regional and national level. Her passion for the sport of rowing and to impart knowledge to others led her into the position of a middle school crew coach at the Washtenaw Rowing Center and then on Skyline’s coaching staff. Bila demonstrated early on an exceptional aptitude for conveying instruction to the middle and high schoolers in front of her. As a former classroom teacher myself, it was easy to identify that Ella's was comfortable around the athletes and understood their individual needs. She recognized quickly the need to approach each athlete in different ways to help them understand the concept in front of them. Similar to other great educators, she always took the time to get to know her athletes. Creating avery positive team culture, which the athletes thoroughly enjoyed. Her time as the novice women’s coach (primarily freshmen athletes) was very successful on and off the water. She took time out of her busy schedule to assist her athletes with academics as well (this was not a requirement of the job). Bila’s work ethic and commitment were never in doubt. Her commitment level, made the running of the team easier. As with all sports, interacting with parents is an important component of the job. Ella was very comfortable speaking directly with parents at races as well as maintaining clear lines of communication via email and phone. She was not afraid to tackle difficult situations head on, a rare skill for someone of her age. Eila was always keen to improve her skill set and was effective at asking questions, which would allow her to develop positively. I would have no hesitation in hiring Eila again, My trust level has extended to her looking after my two infant sons on a regular basis as well.
