I Have a Dream

By: Kaydee and Marisa

Background
Ever notice how sports get more attention
than other extracurricular activities on
campus? Or how some athletes seem like
the teachers pet in the classroom?
What is the issue/problem?: Student
Inequality on school campus
- Favoritism towards certain groups of
students
- Some athletes given grades they dont
actually earn
- Teachers playing favorites
- Extracurricular activities (clubs, sports,
music) not given equal funding, access to

Background
How long has this been a problem? There is
no way to figure out how long this has been
a problem as it is simply due to how people
act towards other people
Who is affected by it?: Pretty much
everyone
- Students
- Teachers
- Administration
- The community outside of the school

Current Situation
Cant really blame teachers for showing
favoritism. It is human nature to react or feel
a certain way to certain person or group of
people. There is no way to entirely get rid of
this problem but there have been attempts
to decrease the amount of favoritism on
school campuses.
1) Give students the same amount and
same type of constructive attention to
each student
-) Teachers often focus excessively on the
athletic abilities of student athletes
-) Find a way for each student to be the

Current Situation
Let students know they are doing a good
job and that the teacher recognizes them
2) Teachers to push student athletes to have
the same drive and passion they have in
their sports, into their academics
- Teachers often look at athletic strengths
rather than academic strengths of student
athletes
-Given passing grades in order to
participate in sports even though they may
be failing; cutting slack
-Make students earn grades they actually
work for; ensuring that each student works

Proposed Solution
Equality and favoritism can be subjective so
it is hard to regulate the solutions that are to
be proposed.
Administration and teachers should strive
to create a more equal environment by
either placing new rules or following the
rules
- Do not bend or deviate from the
rules
Equal funding opportunities to all clubs or
sports
- Given a necessary amount
- Allow clubs and sports a fair

Proposed Solution
If faculty (administration and teachers),
students, and the community all help in
some way, our proposed solution can work.

Proposed Solution: Survey

Results
13 responses from Mililani High School
Students
-Does our school(Teachers, administration,
staff) show favoritism to certain students?100% yes
-If yes, which students are favoritism shown
to?
- athletes, football players, the smart
ones, people who know the teacher from
prior experience, asian smart ones, loud
white girls who are attention seeking

Proposed Solution: Survey

Results
-If no, do you think this is fair or right?92.3% no, 7.7% yes
-Is there an equal opportunity for all
students (clubs and sports)? - 53.8% no,
46.2% yes
-Why do you think our school shows
favoritism?
- Because people like other people
better, to help certain people succeed,
human nature, allow athletes to play,
athletics bring income in for the school,
people like sports

Proposed Solution: Survey

Results
-What are some solutions to address this
problem?
-Have anonymous favoritism report on
edline, have faculty be more strict and treat
everyone the same, show equal appreciation
for all students, have everyone grade the
same way, dont be too lenient, address this
problem to teachers

Possible Objections
Who might object our proposal?
- Community members, students,
teachers, administration
Why?
No solution will be perfect. Our biggest
issue with our proposal is time and money.
Time
- not enough time in the day for
everyone
- not everyone will be happy
- might disappoint the community
- Schedule changes

Possible Objections

Money
- Not enough money for everyone
- budget and adjust spending
- hard time adjusting

Even though there are reasons not to

accept our proposal, If everyone is getting
an equal opportunity, then I dont see why
we shouldnt work harder to help make our
solution possible.

Call to Action
-Favoritism WILL ALWAYS be an issue on
campuses
-Human nature that causes favoritism
-Having some type of solution is better than
having no solution, it will allow favoritism to
have a smaller impact on school campuses
-If not favoritism will remain the huge
issue it is now
