English Language Arts Reflection
After reading from the English Language Arts/Literacy framework in an elementary
classroom, the knowledge that I gained from the readings is an understanding the complexities
that I need to embrace in order to teach effectively. Collaboration and communication is valuable
to our framework. Students need to understand what they read and orally communicate their
refection. If a student can explain it, then they can understand it. The components of language
development revolves around comprehension and communication.
Classes that have prepared me at Cal State Dominguez Hill is Anthropology 312
(Language and Culture), English 111 (Freshman Composition 2), English 305(Critical Reading
and Literature), English 487(Second Language Teaching and Learning), Liberal Studies
355(Writing in Education). These classes have prepared me by assigning me projects that helped
me analyze childrens books and elaborate on the authors message. Liberal Studies 355 gave me
instructional examples that encouraged better writing and gained interest for all learners.
Areas of English Language Arts/ Literacy that I feel well prepared in is how to create fun
methods that will make students receptive to instruction. Liberal Studies 355 suggested ideas that
work well in the classroom, such as, placing baseball cards around the room and students will
write the description of different players and the student who gets the other students players

description will have to go around and identify which player they were analyzing. I feel
competent in delivering similar ideas to the classroom.
Areas that I feel less prepared in is my familiarity of the variety of childrens books that
will assign to my students. I need to do my research to find fun and educational books that will
bring academic analysis and conversation. It is important that students have rigorous instruction,
implemented will a fun experience.
Artifacts and work samples that I plan to share in my portfolio is written essays from
previous courses that has shaped my writing proficiency. My philosophy as a teacher is to give
students positive reinforcement and it is my priority to make sure each student feels confident.
My essay explains how I had a time in my life where I struggled in writing, however, with
courage and the positive influences from my college professors, I became a successful writer,
and I want to create a teaching style like my influential teachers that Ive had.
