Characterization Chart: Making Inferences
Because writers don't always tell you everything you need to know about a character, you must make
inferences, or logical guesses, based on story details and your own experiences. For example, in the
Alice Walker's short story, "Everyday Use,” you might infer that the mother of the story prefers the
‘outdoors from her comment, "A yard like this is more comfortable than most people know...Itis like an
extended living room."
‘As you read, notice what the characters’ words and actions tell you about their personalities and
attitudes. Take notes on a chart like the one below.
Use as many sheets (front and back) as it takes to list all of the characters in “Woman Hollering Creek”.
You must have at least 4-5 story details/inferences for each character.
