How does depression lead to suicide in EMS workers?
There are many causes to depression in EMS such as PTSD and anxiety which can lead to major
outcomes such as suicide.

Chapman, Michael. "EMS." Personal interview. 10 Mar. 2016.

Michael Chapman is a teacher at St. James High School. Chapman teaches many Health Science
classes including E.M.S. which I am enrolled in. On the first day we were talking about
depression and how more and more Emergency Medical Service workers are committing suicide
because of not knowing how to cope. Depression is very serious. It is literally a life or death
situation for some people. There are many programs to help workers who suffer from depression
but many of them do not want to attend them in fear that they will come to reality with their
depression.

Grayson, Kelly. "True Confessions of a Clinically Depressed Medic." EMS1. Web. 03

Mar. 2016.
Kelly Grayson is a Paramedic from Louisiana. He has been a paramedic for 18 years seeing
things everyday that no one should have to see. A couple months before he wrote this article him
and his wife got divorced because she could not deal with the ways her husband were acting.

Grayson had no idea that he had depression and denied it when someone told him to go to the
doctor. One day he went to one of his friends who is a physician and asked him about his
symptoms and he was diagnosed with depression. Grayson did not want to believe that he had
depression but accepted it and got the help he needed. No one should ever keep their depression
silence.

Newland, Chad. "Survey Reveals Alarming Rates of EMS Provider Stress and Thoughts
of Suicide." - Journal of Emergency Medical Services. Web. 03 Mar. 2016.
This article about Courtney Smith was one of the saddest things I have ever read. Smith was a 54
year old Paramedic for 28 years of her life. She has seen many suicides, deaths, and accidents.
People though that she could handle the stress since she hid it well but on the inside she was
dying. One day Smith drove out to a country road three hours from anyone she knew and went
out to a field, texted her 3 children that she loved them and was so very proud of them, then
proceeded to pull out a pistol and take away all the bad memories. People were not prepared for
Smith to Commit suicide but others saw a shift in her attitude at work. So why didn't they say
anything?
